Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Tracy looked around and saw no one in the corridor. This place looks familiar to her. The walls were a cream color with golden hue and the tile floor is a mahogany color. The moon outside the window was a bright red. The castle was eerily quiet during the night. Suddenly a blood curdling scream echoed through the castle walls. Tracy ran to the courtyard and saw her people battling against the spider monsters.

Her father looked over and yelled at her to retreat to the East Wing. She ran as fast as her little legs could and bumped into her instructor, Jayson. "Tracy, what are you doing here? The castle's under attack!" he exclaimed.

"Father told me to retreat to the East Wing! I think he's in trouble!" she replied. Out of nowhere a big spider monster emerged from the shadows and tried attacking her. Jayson drew his sword and swung at the monster. He missed and the monster bit his right shoulder. Jayson pierced the monster's stomach with his sword and forced it through. The monster's blood splattered everywhere, even on Tracy. Jayson turned to look at her.

"I'm sorry you had to see that, but we don't have much time left," he said. He picked her up and carried her to her bedroom. It was a light shade of lavendar with darker curtains. Jayson placed her on the bed and instructed her to lay down. He placed his index and middle fingertips on her forehead and said something to her. She couldn't make out what he was saying though. It sounded like someone was calling her name.

"Tracy Hunter!" a man exclaimed. Tracy opened her eyes and looked up. Her Magi teacher was looking at her with a disappointed look on his face. "Stay after and study the material you missed while you were sleeping," he scolded. Tracy groaned and hit her head against the desk.

"That's harsh, I guess a No-Mag like you shouldn't be sleeping in class," a girl mocked.

"Shut the hell up, Sylvia. I'm not in the mood," Tracy groaned. Sylvia slammed her hand on Tracy's desk and smirked at her.

"You really shouldn't talk back to a True Blood, No-Mag. I can easily squash you like a bug."

"Says the True Blood who can't cast a simple spell correctly. You could try setting someone on fire and cover them in flowers instead. I've seen you do that," Tracy retaliated. Sylvia's face turned red as she stormed off. Tracy smirked. "Serves her right. I may be a No-Mag, but I can still fight!" she thought.

Tracy stayed after and copied the notes from Natalie's book. After she finished, she started heading back to the orphanage. It's been almost a year since her parents passed. With no relatives to take her in, she was forced to be put up for adoption at the age of 12. She is now 13 and still has yet to be adopted. She stopped by the library and looked at the horror novels. Mrs. Cook, the librarian, look up at her. "Still no new books. They'll arrive Thursday," she announced.

"Okay! I'll reread 'Straw-man Walks at Twilight'!" she exclaimed, happily. She loved the Spine Chiller series and wanted to be an author, although it would be hard for her. She didn't mind, though.

She checked out the book and walked back to the orphanage. There, Natalie was waiting on the steps. "Hey! There you are! What took you so long?" Natalie asked.

"I went to get a new book. Look! I'm rereading 'Straw-man Walks at Twilight'!" Tracy exclaimed. Natalie sighed with a smile.

"You'll give yourself nightmares from all the horror stories you read," she sighed. They laughrd and walked inside. Tracy noticed it was almost 8 pm and walked to her room. She changed into her pajamas and sat on the bed with her side lamp on so she could read. An hour passed before she put the book down and turned her lamp off. She closed her eyes and went to sleep. When she opened her eyes again, she saw a shadow moving in the darkness.

She laid still, not wanting to let it know she was awake. It moved closer and closer, until she could see it had two arms and six legs. Almost like a spider. She froze in terror. "Oh no, why a spider!?" When it was beside her bed, she grabbed her book and swung it at the creature. She felt it connect to its jaw, but it recovered and pinned her arms to the bed.

Its hands felt like a humans, but were cold and hand sharp claws. She could see hair on its head like any normal person, but it had four spider legs attached to its back and two humans legs and arms. It also had eight blood, red eyes. It open its mouth and bit her neck. Tracy tried to scream, but no sound came out. "This is it. This is how I die!" she thought.
