Chapter 1: Interviews
Avaline P.O.V
Classes are going to be starting in half a week, today's the day that I'll be choosing a roommate. Even though I don't want one. I should have thought it through when I wanted to rent the apartment. All I wanted to do was live in my little apartment alone and focus on college was that so much to ask (maybe a little).
But then again here I am, waiting for the fourth applicant who is late, and not by five minutes no it's been thirty minutes.
I sat on one of the stool at the island on side of my kitchen, while sipping on my tea thinking to myself do I need a roommate I mean if I could find a great paying job and maybe win the lottery in the next few extra hours, that can probably work. But then It'll take time off my study and I won't have too much time as I did when I was in high school and over the summer. Unless I win that lottery, I mean come on. Roommate it is. So far I've interviewed about three applicants.
I didn't want a roommate but the owner, Mr. Danson thought it would a great idea to raise the rent to about $2,499 every two months a while ago so I resort to the roommate. Why is New York so expensive? So it's not like I have a choice. I need to get someone to pitch in half of the rented.
I've interviewed two girls and one guy. The first person was a girl named, Clarice. She's one of those girls who would be in one of those girls' clubs that live together and stuff, but other than that she was quite nice and maybe a person I can stand to live with. She wasn't what TV has stereotype blondes to be. She happens to be quite intelligent and wanted to be an elementary teacher. I'll definitely put her into consideration.
Flashback
I was preparing for my first interview ever, so I mean how bad can it be. What's asking a few questions about someone's personal life and hoping they're not a murderer who will try to kill you in your sleep. As I was writing down my questions in a notebook I heard someone knocking on the door.
Guess I'm going to have to wing it.
I thought as I open the door to be met with a young girl with blonde hair and blue eyes not to mention a preppy full-on smile.
"Hi I'm Clarice I'm here for the roommate interview with Avaline," She said with a bashful smile appearing to be pretty excited as if she was meeting Jesus himself ha she wishes.
"Hey, it's nice to meet you please come in..." As I moved aside shutting the door behind us and leading here to the kitchen island.
"Please sit down would you like anything to drink before we get started"
"Water is fine, thank you" she responded with a ray of positivity.
And who said that blondes are mean girls.
We got started with the questions and I started writing the new ones I came up with, that lasted up to twenty-five minutes.
Flashback End
The second person was a boy named Dylan. Base on his name you would think he's chill kind of guy but not at all. He was the exact opposite he was what you call a clean freak or germaphobic if that's even a word. He was that type of person. He even brought a glove to see if it was clean and I kept the house clean, I wasn't the messy type, but it wasn't good enough for him. He then found the cleaning supplies and started cleaning the counter. how he knew where it was I don't know (creepy).
Flashback
Just as I was walking Clarice out someone else was already waiting on the porch.
"Bye Clarice it was nice talking to you," I said as I waved back at her and then turn to the guy that was standing in front of my apartment door.
"Hello, may I help you?"
"I'm here for the roommate interview, that's here right ?" He answered back getting up he had slick back hazelnut brown hair and was wearing a sweater vest and a button-up white long sleeve shirt.
He looks way more professional than me but let's not talk about that.
"Yes it is you're a bit early..." like twenty minutes early " but please come in we can start now"
" That's why I came early I wanted to see your neighbors," he said walking in.
O....kay
We sat down and I started asking some simple questions.
Ten minutes later
" Do you have any questions of your own that you'll like to ask me? " I asked as he reaches in his pocket and pulled out some gloves and walked to the kitchen sink to wipe his hand across it and said.
" The house looks to be clean-ish by how often do you regularly clean it?"
"About every Saturday of-"
"WRONG" That's when it went downhill from there and it got weirder.
Flashback End
Yeah, he was a total no capital N-O. To summarize, he was a clean freak and terrifying. I'm not sure I can live with someone like that.
Then I'd also interviewed a girl name Lauriane. I know kind of a weird name but I guess it's unique. She was (is) weird like very, she's probably the weirdest person I've met and I should know I'm kinda weird myself. She licked the wall saying that it was minty and then she tried to steal my busted up sneakers put she only took one of the pairs. If that isn't weird then I don't know what is. She's a total no-no.
The last person I'm waiting for whose name is Vida he didn't say much on his email and I couldn't quite understand it. There were a lot of grammatical errors.
I look over on my phone and there were a missed call and a text message from Kylie on it.
"Hey haven't heard from you in a while hope you're all settled in... also have you found someone yet. I miss you call me back as soon as possible"-Kylie
Kylie is my cousin, aunt Amy, and uncle Kyle's daughter. Practically my best friend since I don't really have friends well I did but I'm more of an introvert and when I moved after graduation keeping contact wasn't really that easy I guess.
So I decided to text her that I'll call her back later and I have one more person to interview.
It's almost been thirty minutes and it's getting pretty late I'm not sure this guy wants this spot at all. I mean I know I'm not the greatest person to live with but I'm semi-okay and he doesn't know that.
All of a sudden, there was a loud knocking at the door. I stand up off my soft (yeah I know you're jealous you wish you had this soft stool to sit on) stool. It better be him at the door or else or else I swear. I open the door to see a tall (well everyone is taller than me curses 5'3) muscular but lenient body with short curly dark brown hair to match his beautiful honey brown eyes. He leans against the door frame and our eyes met for a quick second. Well, he's the most attractive man ever but then I haven't really seen a guy other than my uncle and cousin Kahili unless Wal-Mart counts.
"Hey, are you Vida?" I ask I'm pretty sure I'm not pronouncing that right.
"Yup that's the name on my birth certificate and it's pronounced ' Vee-dah', " He said sarcastically in a deep slight Spanish accent and something else, standing up straight and lets out a chuckle. "But call me V"
I let out an awkward, jittery laugh "Would you like to come in?" I ask gestured my hand moving aside from the door. Of course, he would like to come in...stupid question (but I've been asking everyone that).
"Yeah thanks" he nods.
"Great place you got here," he says walking in and looking around the house.
"I guess it is "I shrug my shoulders.
I walk around him into the kitchen and sat at the island one the stools. He walks up and sits on the stool across from me.
"Before we start do you want coffee, tea, water.," I ask as I get up
"Coffee will be nice," He says politely
I started on his coffee as he begins to speak.
"Um...Ava... is it okay if I call that, I'm gonna call you Ava " he asks (well not really) and looks at me for permission so I nod ( heh he calls me Ava... I mean my cousins do that too but still....let me have this" and he continues " so straight to point what kind of question do you need me to ask me before you let me into your beautiful home"He asks. he's the way to confident but kinda low-key makes him very attractive... cheese whiz focus Avaline.
Dude asks a lot of questions okay not a lot I ask more but...
"Wait a second "I hold a finger as I move to the coffee maker." How do you like your coffee"
"Just plain black," he says
"You just made my job a lot easier," I said handing him his coffee.
"This is great thanks," he said as he's about to take a sip.
"Now let's get started, "I say
He nods his head a mutter an 'okay'
"Why would you like to move in here?" I ask the question that I ask for the fourth time today.
"Because I really needed a place that's close to the college and since I kind of got kick out of the dorms a while ago." He says
"Why were you kicked out of the dorm?" I ask
"Well the Dean doesn't really tolerate smoking in your dorm"
"Do you smoke? "I ask with my straight face but deep down I'm feeling uncomfortable..... my mom smokes.
"Oh no not really like that I don't smoke cigarettes, but it wasn't me it was the guy I was sharing the dorm with. I'm dumb enough to smoke cigarettes and at that in a dorm room knowing it was inspection... they couldn't really prove who it was so both of us got kicked out" he explains irritated at the situation that took place.
"Good cause I can't stand cancer sticks nor drugs for that matter," I said in all seriousness and bitterness but still worried about what does he smokes if it's not cigarettes.
"That's all cool with me," He says agreeing with a coarse, deep chuckling as he looks around the kitchen, I'm not sure he means that...
"Great next question, "I said then I got a phone call from Kylie, I hold out a finger gesture to tell wait for a second as I answer the call.
"Hey, Kylie what's up cuz? ," I asked knowing that I'm in trouble for not getting back to her any sooner.
" I just call to check on you since you haven't made the effort to called me yet," she said sounding petty as always.
"I'm all good actually I'm just interviewing the last person, "I said and Vida gives me a shameless smirk and wink.
Thank god my complexion is dark that people are unable to see me blush but I'm pretty sure my eyes said everything.
"I'm sorry for interrupting and I'll call you some other time or maybe you can make the effort this time," she says sarcastically.
"Okay love you bye "I hung up and saw that I had a missing call and text message from Clarice the message said:
Hey I tried to call you to let you know that I can't move in with you sorry I got accepted into the school's sorority and they provide housing, I'm sorry for wasting your time -Clarice
(oh that's what that club thing for girls is called)
I send a quick 'it's okay'
"Okay, Vida if I were to say let you stay here what are your rules"
"Well if you were to let me stay here, first I will like this place to be clean at all times," he says and I cut him with my question
"Are you a clean freak?"
"No, I just hate a messy environment and base on the looks of it so do you," He said looking at me warily.
I nod and motion for him to continue
"I need to have a lock on my door," He says and continue
"I'll be cleaning up all dishes if you do both of our laundries" I nod not minding, in my opinion this was fair since I hate doing the dishes.
"Also we both can choose a day on who gets to cook dinner and that's it," He said stating his rules.
"Okay I can agree with those rules and the same goes for me except I need to add one more thing," I said and he nods his asking me to continue.
"Don't go through my stuff ever?" I said in all seriousness.
"Okay I'm cool with it same goes with me, so can I move in?" he asked me pouting in frankly sexy.
Wait did I really think that maybe me living with a guy isn't the best idea. Oh well too late to back out now.
I chewed on my bottom lip think while pulling my glasses out of my face to wipe them and came to a conclusion.
"Fine I'll let you move in fact you can move in tonight or later whatever works for you and rent are $2,499.00 every two months we split $1,249.50 each."
"Tonight's good, " He said getting up and moving toward the door but stops.
"Hey Ava can you be a sweetheart and please help me get my things from my parents," He said with a smug smirk.
"I don't know if I like the idea of being a sweetheart," I said with a smirk of my own.
He then looks at me with another pout but it's different this time, he looks like an injured husky. I'll have to admit (not out loud) was adorable.
Just have to resist Ava
I tried fighting the urge but failed miserably.
"Fine," I said with a sigh thinking to myself that it's going to be a long night as I followed behind him to his car wondering if I'm making the best decision.
______________________________
This was the first chapter y'all again I had a hard time describing Vida so please bear with me.
Up top, that's the apartment and every room but Vida's room.
Also, I won't be putting any Dear Future Me occurring times yet.
And I still have no clue who the character role-play would be and I think I'm going to do that after the book is complete.
Thank you and love you all.
