A loud knock rattles the front door, causing both me and Anthony to jump out of our seats. Who could it be? Anthony looks at me, shaking his head. I nod, walking towards the window to see who it was. I peer through the gap in the curtains, making sure I don't get seen. An old lady stands outside the door, wide-eyed and a big smile etched across her face. She doesn't move, continuing to stare at the door. "Michael? Anthony? Won't you be kind enough to let a frail old woman in?" Her head turns slowly, an eerily unnatural gesture as her eyes meet mine, still wide, never blinking. "Michael? You wouldn't want me to die out here would you?"
As she finishes, a crowd forms behind her, men and women with the same creepy expression on their faces. They all carried some sort of weapon in their hands, from knives to large metal pipes. Another guy steps in front of the door, standing directly behind the woman. Without warning, he slashes her throat, spilling all of her blood on the wooden door. Smile still in place, her eyes the same wide darkness that met mine, she fell, clutching her neck as thick crimson seeps from the cracks between her fingers. "Mikey…" She gurgles, gagging in her own blood. "Y-you let me die…" There was no more movement from her as she lies still on the front porch, old veiny hands still wrapped around her throat.
The crowd moves in sync, like a swarm of ants moving in one fluid motion. Their smiles don't go away, with all of their eyes now fixated on me. Fog suddenly blankets the view, a white blindness completely obscuring any attempt of surveillance to the outside. There was a faint movement within it as arms and legs occasionally come into view.
I step away from the window, looking at Anthony who was waiting for some sort of plan. "What now?"
A loud bang rattles the entire house as cracks appear on the main door, pieces of splinters scattered all over the ground. Anthony quickly pushes the drawer towards the door, barring entry. I push the couch as well, further reinforcing the barricade. "Go get the car started, I'll grab our stuff and meet you at the garage." The floor screeches as I heave the couch, pushing with all of my weight. Anthony doesn't hesitate, immediately running off to get the car running.
The door breaks as the head of a hammer passes through, creating a small hole in the door. The sound of glass shattering fills the whole house as well as rocks come soaring through the windows, breaking them upon impact. Shit! I run towards our room, thankful for the fact that Anthony didn't unpack more than he had to. I swing both of our duffel bags around my shoulders, my knees nearly buckling underneath the weight.
"Get them!" A voice shouts from upstairs as the door is blown wide open, dozens of bodies hurling themselves onto the ground. More people appear at the top of the staircase, running at me, eyes full of madness.
I sprint for the garage door, wide open for me to pass through. Anthony pops the trunk and catches the bags as I throw them his way, putting them in as I rush to shut the door behind me. "House is overrun. Get ready to wing it!" I grab a large metal pole and cram it in front of the door, locking it in place as it shakes from all the banging. The garage door opens with a groan, its mechanical opening slowly rising to carve a path.
"Mike, get inside!" Anthony screams as I quickly hop on the car. "We've got company." Three people stand in front of the driveway, one of them carrying a chainsaw vibrating furiously in his hands. An eerie smile was etched on his face, the same unblinking stare looking towards us. He shouts, pointing towards the car as the other two start to run towards us.
I take out my revolver as I lower the windows on my side. "Step on it!" I yell to Anthony as the car whirs to life, throttling itself towards the waiting madman. My stomach churns as I tilt my head out of the window, pointing the barrel towards him. I squeeze and as the gun barks, he falls down to the ground, the chainsaw falling beside him. His companions jump onto the car as Anthony takes a turn, the garage door now swarming with our pursuers behind us as they continue to chase, slowly disappearing into the fog. The two hammer at the windshield as a massive web of cracks fill the entire window, rendering us blind.
"I can't see shit!" Anthony screams as more poundings crash onto the roof of the car. I point the gun upwards and shoot, which causes a thud as a body falls off. The window fully breaks, filling the entire car with mist and glass. A hand grabs Anthony as he struggles to keep his hands on the steering wheel. "MIKE!" I jab the arm with the butt of the revolver, not wanting to risk shooting Anthony. Another thud arrives at the side of the car as the guy falls off.
I pull my head towards the back of my seat, exhausted beyond all understanding. Anthony doesn't stop driving, albeit going much slower as he tries his best to squint through the fog. "How many times have we almost died lately?" I say as I holster the revolver, running one hand across my face. "I think I'm with you on the raise."
"If we don't die from the people around here, we'll die from driving off a cliff." As he finishes his statement, the car suddenly trembles as we go over a nasty bump, causing it to swerve out of Anthony's control. "Hold on!" The tires screech as the car skids towards the side of the road, heading head first into a pole. Anthony braces himself and I do the same as the car crashes, nearly launching us out of the window.
The safety bags expand, preventing us from cracking our skulls. Smoke rises as I look at Anthony, now unconscious, blood dripping down his forehead. My eyes scour the area, completely blanketed by the fog. "Where the fuck are we now?"
