Chereads / Ink of Destiny: The Legend of Nik Owl / Chapter 14 - The Outcast Scholar

Chapter 14 - The Outcast Scholar

Nicole, now known as Nik Owl, roamed the bustling streets of Biringan, seeking someone who could teach her the language of this enigmatic city. She realized that if she wants to have allies then she have to work hard to learn their language. She do not have any power to convert her thoughts to people so she can be understood. She approached various people, trying to make her intentions clear through gestures and fragmented sentences, but communication proved challenging.

At one market stall, she attempted to convey her need for a language teacher to a merchant selling exotic fruits.

"Teach... me... words?" she said slowly, pointing to herself and then mimicking writing in the air.

The merchant frowned, scratching his head. "Teach? You want... buy words?"

Nicole sighed, shaking her head. She pointed to her mouth and ears, then to her surroundings, trying to indicate speaking and listening. The merchant's eyes lit up with understanding, and he beckoned a young girl nearby. After a brief, rapid exchange, the girl nodded and took Nicole's hand, leading her through the winding streets.

They arrived at a modest house on the edge of the city. The girl knocked on the door, and it opened to reveal a stunningly beautiful man. His features were delicate yet striking, with long, flowing hair and eyes that seemed to hold galaxies within them. He wore simple, yet elegant clothes, adorned with symbols and patterns that marked him as someone of knowledge and distinction.

The girl spoke to him quickly, and he nodded, ushering Nicole inside. The man introduced himself as Arion, a scholar who was often sought after for marriage but had been outcast due to his eccentric ideas.

"I am Arion," he said in a gentle yet firm voice, his eyes scanning Nicole with curiosity. "You wish to learn our language?"

Nicole nodded vigorously, a sense of relief washing over her. "Yes, I need to understand and communicate."

Arion's expression softened. "I will help you. But first, you must know, my ideas are not well-received here. People think me mad because I speak of things beyond their comprehension."

Nicole's interest was piqued. "What kind of things?"

Arion led her to a room filled with intricate devices, diagrams, and books. "I study the stars, the movements of the heavens, and the nature of our world. I believe there is more to Biringan than what we see. There are forces, energies, that we have yet to understand."

Nicole's eyes widened. "I believe you," she said earnestly. "Back where I come from, such ideas are explored and sometimes even proven."

Arion's eyes sparkled with newfound hope. "You believe me? No one has ever done so before."

From that moment, Arion became not just her teacher but her devoted supporter. He shared his life story with her, how his curiosity and passion for knowledge had led him to be shunned by society. Despite his brilliance, he had lived in isolation, his only companions the stars and his endless theories.

"People fear what they do not understand," he explained. "But you, Nik Owl, you are different. You see beyond the surface."

Nicole smiled, feeling a deep connection with this kindred spirit. "Thank you, Arion. Let's start with the language. I need to communicate with everyone to help fulfill the prophecy."

Arion nodded, and their lessons began. Every day, Nicole spent hours learning the intricate language of Biringan. Arion was a patient and thorough teacher, and Nicole's progress was swift. The news of her studying the language spread quickly, and the people of Biringan were elated.

Whenever Nicole walked through the streets, people would point out objects, repeating their names in their language. It became a communal effort, with everyone contributing to her education.

"Tree," a child would say, pointing to a nearby tree.

"Ah, tree," Nicole would repeat, smiling.

"Stone," an elder would add, pointing to a rock.

"Stone," she echoed, earning approving nods.

One day, as she was practicing with Arion, a woman approached her, holding a basket of fruit. "Apple," she said, offering one to Nicole.

"Apple," Nicole repeated, taking the fruit with gratitude. The woman's eyes shone with pride.

The people of Biringan began to see Nik Owl not just as an outsider but as someone genuinely invested in their culture and well-being. They admired her determination and felt a growing bond with her.

In her lessons with Arion, they would often delve into more than just vocabulary. Arion taught her about the history and legends of Biringan, including the prophecy that had brought her to their city.

"The prophecy speaks of a tattooed stranger who will bring peace and enlightenment to Biringan," Arion explained one evening. "You embody this prophecy, whether by fate or choice."

Nicole felt the weight of his words but also a sense of empowerment. "I will do my best," she said. "Not just for the prophecy but for the people here, for you, Arion."

Arion bowed his head. "You have my loyalty, Nik Owl. For the first time in my life, I feel understood and valued. I will serve you faithfully, for you are the light in our darkness."

As days turned into weeks, Nicole's command of the language grew stronger. She could converse more fluently, her confidence increasing with each passing day. The people of Biringan began to see her as a true part of their community, their initial skepticism giving way to trust and hope.

One evening, after an intense language session, Nicole and Arion sat on a balcony overlooking the city. The sky was painted with hues of orange and purple as the sun set.

"Thank you, Arion," Nicole said softly. "For everything. I couldn't have done this without you."

Arion smiled, his gaze thoughtful. "No, Nik Owl. It is I who should thank you. You have given me purpose and belief. Together, we will uncover the truths of Biringan and bring about the change we seek."

As they sat in companionable silence, watching the stars emerge in the night sky, Nicole felt a renewed sense of determination. She was not alone in this journey. With Arion by her side and the support of the people of Biringan, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Their bond, forged through mutual respect and shared goals, would be the cornerstone of the new era they hoped to usher in. And so, with each word learned and each step taken, Nicole moved closer to fulfilling the prophecy and discovering her true destiny.
