I knew what he was expecting to hear from me. I also wanted to say those words to him, but our circumstances were different now.
"I'm sorry, I can't marry you." I finally said it. I could feel my voice was starting to shake, but I managed to control it. Hoping he did not notice it.
When I finally looked at him, I could see the denial in his eyes. He did not believe what I just said.
"Is that a joke? Please say yes." His voice was not as sure as it usually was. There was no confidence in his face. He looked like a man who just lost everything. "Please say, you'll marry me."
"I'm sorry, but I think we should end this." I wiped the few tears that escape my eyes and hardened myself for what I had to say next. "I don't love you." I continued to stare at his face. With cold eyes, I repeated my last words. "I said I can't marry you because I don't love you."
