Chapter 58 - "Town meeting!"

Evren and Walter were sitting in his house, leaning over the table at the large piece of paper on it. Evren was drawing, and Walter was watching with an excited look on his face. Evren stood up and said, "Like this?" Walter stared at the paper for a moment before shaking his head, "Let me see the pencil."

Walter started drawing the piece next to the drawing of Evren's what he was drawing was a close up of the details he wanted to include on the sword. The sword was drawn to actual size on the paper, what Walter was doing was in regard to the etchings he wanted to add to the sword. He already had discussed and come up with the enchants for the sword, he was going to use the same strong and sharp that Evren used on his sword. Evren was glad for this because he wasn't quite ready yet to create a flaming sword of 'burning everything but itself and the wielder' yet.

As for Evren's armor, Levi had proposed he make a scale armor from mithril instead of adamantium, because it was lighter, more flexible and could be enchanted to be just as durable. Something tough like adamantium was more suited for plate armor than it was for chain or scale. Making the scales for the armor would be the tough part. Evren said he had an idea for that though.

As Evren watched Walter drawing out the pattern for the etching, Evren began to understand how it flowed together. They decided to use silver for the etching as it would stand out well against the red of the blade, as they had decided to craft the sword out of scarletite instead of adamantium. As Walter worked on the drawing, Evren pulled out another piece of paper, and began doodling on it to try to come up with a design for the scales used in his armor.

The scales he drew ranged from rounded, to pointed, to squared. Some had textures on them, while some had reinforced ridges. They were made of various sizes from some the size of his thumbnail to something the size of the back of his hand. He had the plan to use larger sizes to cover the areas where less flexibility was needed, and smaller ones to cover the spaces between. He wasn't sure if he wanted a gradient to the sizes or if it were just two sizes. He thought it would be easier with just the two sizes. As he was drawing, Walter had finished with the etching and was watching him doodle.

Evren stopped what he was doing and looked at the etchings. They were very well drawn and had an elaborate design that went all the way down the blade, and inside the fullers. Evren would mirror the design on the other side of the blade giving it symmetry. He would need two gems embedded on the sword somewhere, so Walter included them in the design, placing them on opposite sides of the quillon block of the guard. The sword would be longer than Evren's and have a two-handed grip with a broad fuller. Both the quillon and the pommel had a straightforward design with emphasis on function over decorative.

Evren was going to put his unit insignia on the pommel, as he had done with his. Sword on fire, pointing downward at an angle. It just wasn't going to include the gemstones as the size of the gemstones would be too big to fit properly.

As Evren thought of the gemstones, he realized he would have to go back to Plinth again to engrave the gemstones and thought that perhaps he should take someone with him to bring everything here in his wagon. Bringing it to the dungeon wouldn't be too difficult, as the wagon would be lighter than when he traversed the dungeon alone, but he didn't want to damage it during transportation from Plinth to the dungeon. And if it were to be handled roughly, it may cause the precision to waver.

He asked Walter, "Are you ok with this? You've got until I get the sword to the point where I'm going to start engraving to change your mind."

Walter looked down at the design, "I think I'm ok with it for now, if I keep looking at it, I may change my mind and make things difficult for you."

Evren shook his head, "It'll be difficult with just the engraving, how elaborate it is won't matter to me."

Walter said, "But if I keep changing it, you won't be able to …"

Evren interrupted him saying, "Unless you change it while I'm engraving, it won't matter if you don't give the design back until I'm ready to engrave."

Walter nodded with a big smile.

Evren would be casting this sword as the forge should get hot enough to melt adamantium, he was just hoping the crucible would survive the extreme heat. The casting's details wouldn't be great, it would just be the length and width of the blade and the tang. Before Evren was going to do that though, he was going to make some tools out of adamantium. Most of the work can be done with the runed tools he had already made, but the files and engraving chisels needed to be upgraded. Evren lost a lot of time on the making of his sword due to these areas. Evren would engrave the tools and use holy silver as a fill. He would also enchant them with hardness and durability and precision for the chisels.

Evren decided he would be making those first as Levi had a lot of orders to go through for upgrades for the townsfolk. He would work on the tools in the evening, when Levi was usually not working the forge, but with the tools for more precision.

The next day, while he was teaching, he brought up the subject of going to Plinth. "Hey all, I want to go to Plinth to pick up some equipment, anyone want to come along?"

Everyone looked at him for a moment, processing the information. "Oh, I also want to look for books in the fortress, do you think I could get some folk from the town to help out with that as well?"

A chorus of "What?" was heard from several members of the group as Evren completely disregarded their surprise. "I think I'll hold off on going to Plinth, if I find what I'm looking for up in the fortress I won't need to go."

"Wait. Wait. Wait. Evren, you said go up to town. Can we even do that?" Walter asked.

Evren looked at Walter, "I don't see why not. I'm surprised, actually, that nobody has said anything before now. Joseph, you could probably go up there without me, couldn't you?"

Joseph scratched his chin, "Now that you mention it, yeah."

Evren tilted his head and said, "Do you know if there were any gem cutters in town, or jewelry makers?"

Joseph stared at Evren for a moment, the looked away, staring off into space. His eyes got really wide while staring and he replied, "I don't know." He looked to Isabel, "We were just starting out as adventurers when the attack happened. I wasn't looking for jewelry at the time."

Evren nodded and asked, "Where were the nobles located?"

"Nobles were located in the older section of the upper level, and the run off of the second level." Joseph replied.

Evren didn't understand so he asked, "What's the run off?"

Joseph nodded as he began to explain, "Each level has an area past the gate called the run off. It's quieter back there as there is less traffic, so a lot of nobles used the run off as a way to keep away from the riff-raff."

Evren looked through the window outside and suddenly realized, "Oh crap! It's going to be getting cold up there soon. I'd better organize something quickly. I don't want to have to lug that reducer from Plinth to here through the snow."

Joseph stood up and said, "Why don't we go ask right now?" He turned to his granddaughter, "Harley, go gather everyone up and meet in the center of town."

Harley stood up and said, "Yes grandpa!" running out the door to go let the townsfolk know.

Joseph helped Isabel out of her seat, and they started walking towards the center of town. Evren said, "Wait, now? Just like that?" Joseph nodded without looking back. "What kind of plans do you think we have? Half the town was watching Levi make knives yesterday, the other half were probably gossiping in town."

Joseph and Isabel left the house with Pascal and Amelia following. Evren was the only one left in the house as he stood there trying to think of something the townsfolk do on a daily basis and nodded, "Yeah, probably gossip."

Evren followed Joseph and the rest to the center of town. When they got there, people had already started to gather and began chatting with each other. As Harley arrived with a large group of people who were talking to Levi, she gave a thumbs up and Joseph looked around. Joseph waited for around five minutes when the stragglers stopped arriving and said, "This looks like everyone."

He stepped forward and raised both of his hands in the air. As he did so, the people stopped talking and looked towards him. "I'm sure all of you have heard of Evren's arrival by now, for those who have been living under a rock, he's an adventurer who recently fought his way through the dungeon to get here." Evren raised his hand and waved. "Evren has asked me if anyone in the town would like to head up top to look for some things in town."

When he said this people started talking quietly to each other. "He's looking for books primarily and wanted to know if anyone else wanted to go up to town to look with him." Several people in the crowd raised their hands, which started a cascade of hands raising in the air, "Looks like most of you." He looked up to the sky and saw the sun was still before noon.

"Evren's said it should be getting cold up there and wanted to go up before the snows come. Once you've been teleported to the surface, you should be able to come and go anytime you want. The fortress's been abandoned, so I'd prefer if you didn't go alone or unarmed." Joseph added.

"I'd also like to mention we're learning how to use magic from Evren. Once we've learned, we'll pass on what we know to whoever wants to learn. Not everyone may be able to cast all the spells that Evren can, which is another reason we want to find books. Some of them may contain spells that Evren could teach us." Joseph said with a fire in his eyes.

"Alright, go get some warm clothes, and some sacks to carry books with. If you find something else along the way that you like, nobody minds if you grab that as well. Just don't get selfish on us. If you get something, even books, we won't take them from you if you want to keep it." Joseph added.

"Now go, let's meet up by the 85th floor when you're ready." With that Joseph turned around and headed back to his house to get ready himself.

Evren looked around as everyone began to disperse and thought to himself, 'I better go get my bag.'
