Chapter 1 - 1 Belle

There was a loud crashing sound. I jolted up from laying down. There was no way more got in. They can't be that smart, I thought. I scooted as far back as I could against the wall. I made sure I was quiet with my movements. All I could hear was the shuffling of feet. Carefully, I stood up. I walked over to the door and pressed my ear against it.

"It's empty. It's freaking empty!" someone yelled. At first they whispered and then yelled. Following was a loud crash.

"Niko! Calm down. We don't need any trouble." said another voice. They were both female. Then there was another crash. That led to my mistake. I hadn't expected it at all and let out a small squeak. Then everything outside the door went quiet. I slowly backed up from the door and once again pressed myself against the wall. There were footsteps which gradually got louder and louder. Then suddenly they stopped. I swear whoever it was, they could hear my heart beating out of my chest. The door handle twisted and for that slight moment I was glad I always kept the door locked. That one slight moment. Suddenly the door slammed open. I let out a loud scream as I cowered down to the ground.

"Stop Niko! Stop!" A girl yelled. I had my hands above my head as I looked down. I was completely terrified. I didn't know these people. They could kill me for all I knew. Yet nothing happened. Slowly, I looked up. There were two girls standing before me. One taller than the other. She had short brown, almost black hair. Her eyes narrowed at the girl that stood between me and the gun she had in her hand. From what I could see the tallest girl had tattoos that littered her arms and made me wonder if she had more. The shorter girl was completely different. She was rather good looking as well as her friend was. She had long blonde hair that reached just above her butt. She was slim as well. Her head was tilted upwards so I assumed that she was glaring at her friend as well.

"Put the gun down now." The blonde said slowly. She stood her ground as she stood in front of me. Anyone could have guessed that they were close. With the glare that this tall girl was giving, it would make anyone back down and obey. This girl didn't. This girl knew that she wouldn't hurt her. Slowly, the brown haired girl put the gun away and sighed. She put it behind her back as her attention turned to me.

"Name." was all she said. Then the blonde turned around and looked at me as well. They were both extremely good looking. Like the typical good looking friends that always stick together.

"Niko go wait out there. You probably scared the poor girl. Go. Let me talk to her." The blonde girl said as she pushed the girl out of the small room. Once she was out she turned to me. She walked up to me and I tried to scoot away, but you guessed it. I couldn't go anywhere with the wall behind me.

"Calm down. I won't hurt you. What's your name?" She asked. I looked at her and then past her. The other girl had her back to us and was looking out at something.

"My name is Arabella. I didn't do anything. Please don't kill me." I said to her all in a rush. She let out a small laugh as she shook her head.

"You're not going to die. Don't worry about her. She's like that all the time." She said and then she looked around me. Her eyes widened. I didn't know if it was a shock, or happiness about what was before her. Maybe now would be a good time to catch you up.

It's 2085, and our world is well, terrible. It started with our water source. It's a simple explanation. We ran out. We ran out and in a rush every scientist there was, was trying to find a way to get us new water. Yes we are still surrounded by water but in case you didn't know it takes tons of money to purify salt water. Also not to mention that it takes a long time to do so as well. Anyways after the water went out everyone went in a frenzy. They just panicked. Some were driven mad with dehydration and did unspeakable things. Slowly everything went downhill. No one knows how it happened. Just that it did and it destroyed the world as we know it. Only a few survived. Maybe you've guessed it already. What some might've wished would happen because they thought it was cool, has happened. The zombie apocalypse. No they aren't walkers. Or anything else. We know what they are. They are zombie's. Nothing more nothing less. This is our world now. Living in fear of both the living and the dead. The dead for obvious reasons. The living, well let's just say that out of us that are left, it is made up of complete crazy people who are so twisted that they find not only killing the dead fun but also the living. They kill because they either feel like it or for the things that the innocent person has. In my case I could have been killed. I am held up in an old water factory. Well water bottle factory. I've been here for five years on my own hidden in this room. Every now and then I go out and get some food when I need it but otherwise I stay here away from harm. The room I am currently in is filled with cases of bottled water. Purified water. Probably the last there is of it. How did you find this place? Where's your parents? All very good questions. My father used to work here. It wasn't the best but it got us by. My mother died when this whole thing began. She caught the fever. The fever that killed you and brought you back as an undead monster. When that happened, my father took me here. Then he left. At first I assumed that he went to go take care of my mother but eventually when I went back to the hospital I saw the hard truth. Both my parents laid on the ground dried blood surrounding them both. He killed my mother before she turned and then killed himself. Something I would have never been able to do. After that I stayed at the water factory. Going home gave me nightmares. No one has ever come here before now.

"Hey Arabella! Hey!" the blonde said as she snapped her fingers in front of my face. I shook my head as I focused my attention back on her.

"Huh?" I replied. She sighed rather loudly at my response and rolled her eyes.

"You and Niko are the exact same, I swear." she mumbled under her breath. Then she looked me square in the eyes again. "Is anyone else here with you?" she asked.

"No. No one has ever come here before now. I've been alone here for five years." I told her. She looked shocked. Her piercing blue eyes searched my own chocolate brown ones to see if I was lying or not.

"Okay well I'm going to make this very simple. You can either come with us to our group of misfits with your water or we take your water and leave you here. The way I see it, you don't have much of a choice." the blonde said.

"You can't do that!" I exclaimed. At the sound of my voice rising the other girl strolled back into the room to glare at me. "I-I won't let you." I added while trying to act brave which the tattooed girl saw through easily. She walked over to me in three long strides as she pinned me against the wall.

"How are you going to stop me?" he asked. Her voice was threatening and it made me want to hide in all honesty but I stood my ground and glared at her.

"It's mine. You can't take it." I told her.

"Watch me." was all she said as she moved away from me and to the cases of water. She took off her bag and began filling it with my water. I rushed to her and tried to pull her away but she wouldn't budge. She just kept shrugging my hands off of her as she continued to take what she now claimed was hers.

"Stop! Stop it!" I yelled. I was completely helpless. The blonde wasn't even helping me. She stood to the side and watched as it all happened. Eventually this Niko girl shoved me to the ground. I assumed she was frustrated with me pulling on her shirt in my sad attempts to get her to stop. As I looked back up at her she once again had her gun pointed at me.

"Astrid. Fill up the other bag." she said. She never broke eye contact with me. She watched my every move carefully. The blonde which I now know as Astrid began filling up her bag.

"Niko there's so much here. We can't fit all of this in our bags. We should have brought more people." Astrid said. That's when she looked away from me.

"No. You're lucky I even allowed you to come. We'll take what we can and come back for more. You." She said as she looked at me. Are there any carts here?" she asked.

"If there was, why would I tell you?" I replied.

"Listen here." she said as she lowered herself to my level. "You are coming with us. Whether you want to or not so we are taking all of this water. Now I know I don't want to die, neither does my friend, neither do our friends who are waiting for us to return with something, and neither do you. So I am going to ask you again. Are there any carts around here?" I looked at her. Then at the blonde and then at the room around me. I lowered my head as I nodded. As much as she was getting on my nerves, she was stronger than me and had a gun. I was at her mercy. I slowly stood up and walked out the door. I didn't have to tell her to follow me as she had already done so herself. We walked down many halls to get to where I had planned. To any person new here, they would be lost but not me. I knew this place like the back of my hand. We came in front of a door and I opened it. Inside there were shelves of food that I had gotten and filled up. Along with three shopping carts.

"We hit the jackpot." she mumbled as a smile formed itself on her face. "Fill as much as you can in the carts." she said as she grabbed a cart and began filling one herself. I obeyed seeing as I had no choice. She was quickly filling her cart with my food, not even paying me any mind. I sighed quietly and filled my cart as well. Well half of it. At the pace Niko was going. She had filled hers with most of the food so mine was filled halfway. After we got all the food that I had acquired she followed me back to my room.

"About ti- whoa. All that was here?" Astrid asked. Niko nodded and then she looked at me.

"Help her fill your cart with water. I'm going to get the other cart. Don't try anything funny." Niko said sternly and then she left.

"Wouldn't dream of it." I muttered to myself. I hated the way she was so cold to me. Although I feel like she's like that towards everyone that she meets. I for one wouldn't be surprised if she was. Somehow it seemed like that was her naturally.

"I'm glad you're coming with us you know. We don't find many people anymore nowadays. It's like they've all disappeared." Astrid said to me as she was filling the cart. I guess this was her way of breaking the silence. Maybe she just wanted to get me off guard. I don't know.

"They've all died. They didn't disappear. There's a difference." I said as I also began filling the cart. She gave me a small smile and remained quiet. Not long after, Niko returned with the third cart and began to fill it up as fast as she did with the food.

"All right. We got everything. Let's go." Niko said.

"No. I still have stuff here. My clothes. I need clothes." I said to her.

"Don't bother. Where we're going we have plenty of that. It's about the only thing we have. Let's go." she said as she nudged me to the door. I began walking to the exit that I've only left out of a few times. Once we were all out I sighed. This place had been my home for five years and now here I was. Walking away from it with complete strangers, going to God knows where. I took a good minute to remember the place that had become my home and then I began following Astrid and Niko.
