Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Sarah's pov

The one thing I hate more than failing a class or being punished, is being woken up on a Monday morning by my 'precious' mother because it means that I'm either late for school or about to be late for school or something in general and I hate being late.

But I guess today was one of those days because I am being woken up by my mom's voice

"Sarah get up right now! It's time for school" my mom yelled from downstairs, making me jolt up from my peaceful and beautiful slumber

"But mom it's barely... " I searched for my alarm clock to check the time

"... Jesus Christ!! It's 7:30am! Mom, why didn't you wake me up earlier" I yelled since she was downstairs, I'm guessing in the kitchen

"Stop raising your voice, it's not lady-like" practically yelling back at me

I rolled my eyes but didn't comment because that would just make matters worse

I rushed to the bathroom and came out in two minutes, No cap. I quickly wore my uniform mentally thanking my elder sister for getting them ready for me the day before...

My school uniform consisted of a black skirt and a cream top, I know not very original or unique but at least it gives us girls the opportunity to put on whatever skirt we want and most girls use it to their advantage, but, before you ask I'm not most girls my skirt is normal length

As for the boys uniform in my school, well they kinda had to make it compulsory for them to wear the school's trousers or 'pants' as people like to call it only, because, some people like to take a little too much advantage of their privileges or freedom...

To give you a clear picture, some boys started wearing ripped Jeans with that chain stuff they usually hang on their belt hooks to school as uniforms and the school authorities had to take actions against it.

Anyway, I finished all my dressing and whatever in 5mins flat, all I needed to do for my hair was comb it. I have a naturally soft and easy to maintain hair and I'm also in into natural looks ,that is,zero make-up, so running downstairs after seven minutes of being woken up was no big deal. Even though I might have broken a record or something

But What can I say I'm a simple but capable girl. This is me tooting my own horn, you know...

Anyway I ran down the stairs or more like skidded down the stairs taking it like three at a time

"Sarah do not run down the stairs you might fall down and totally disfigure a part of your body and no one will marry you"my mom said when she heard me running

If you haven't notice my Mom is very dramatic, she is also into the prim and proper stuff and lets not forget her superstitions

I remember the day some of my friends came over to watch a movie. A friend of mine stepped over me to take the remote control... After they left me mom gave a lecture on how people crossing over you is bad because your future kids will look like them and what if the person that crossed over you is not good looking?

When I heard that I burst out laughing saying"Mom that sounds so silly!"

She got so mad and gave me the silent treatment for a week telling anyone that cared to ask that I called her names. My dad knew she was being dramatic but told me to apologize anyway just for peace to reign. I did that and she immediately went back to talking to me because really it's hard for her to avoid or not talk to people.

So hearing her tell me that, I decided, for the second time this morning, it was safer to silently roll my eyes and continue what I was doing.

My school's assembly starts by 8:00am, it's also a 4-5mins bus ride to school and it's currently 7:38am so, technically I'm not late to school but I'm late for the prefects meeting at my school which is scheduled at 7:45 and I'm the senior prefect girl of my school which makes it compulsory for me to be there on time so... I need to move!

"Good morning Joseph and Josephine" I greeted my older siblings once I finally got down the stairs , which from their names, you can tell they are twins. "Good morning goodies" I said to my thirteen months old niece, Hope, Josephine's daughter, who gave me a toothless smile and the cutest giggle of all time. The story behind her birth is very complicated but I love her either way.

"Good morning mom and... dad? " I said, my greeting coming out more like a question because I was wondering what dad was doing at home by this time on a work day, he is what you call a workaholic so he would, usually, be at his company by this time

They all replied to my greetings. But I didn't really have time to ask questions because, remember people, I'm already late for a meeting!!!

I dashed toward the couch in the living room where I keep my things after doing homework, despite my mom saying not to, I still keep it there because it's convenient on days like this. After taking my bag and folders I dash towards the front door

"Aren't you going to eat" mom asked, seeing me run to the door

"No mom, I'm already late" I replied "and don't worry I have money for lunch" I added knowing that she was about to ask

"Ok, have a great day at school! "She said happily, by this time I was already out the front door

"Yeah, with the way today started I'm sure it will be a magical day filled with rainbows and unicorns"I replied sarcastically, mostly because, I knew I was out of her hearing range

I ran to the bus stop, thankfully, I saw a bus immediately and jumped in mentally complaining on how my dad refused to buy me a car or even let me learn to drive yet. Even when I offered to buy one myself from my savings he still said no! His reasons being;

1] it's very unusual for a secondary school student to have a car in Nigeria even though I'm 18 and it's legal for me to have a car

2]I can't learn to drive yet because that would make me desperate for a car

3] finally me taking a bus would teach me independence and he was giving me proper home-training (his words not mine)

His reasons were true and they made sense but still! Taking a bus-ride in Nigeria is very inconvenient. Especially if you get to the bus stop and there is no bus there, I'm telling you, the struggle is real, literally!!

In case I haven't mentioned I'm a Nigerian, I live in Lagos, Nigeria and in case you haven't gotten the gist yet I'm a senior in my final year at Qualitus high school.

Anyway, immediately the bus got to my stop, I just jumped down from it and started running to the school humongous gate which is mostly black and had a giant gold coloured QHS on it which stands for the school initials

Getting close to it I had already started hearing lots of "senior Sarah good morning" from juniors and "what's up sarah" from my peers or friends

I guess being the president of the schools science club, debate club and two other clubs, also being the schools ambassador, let's not forget winning lots of trophies for the school both in academics and sports department and finally being the senior prefect girl of the school makes you a little popular

But due to the fact that time wasn't my friend this morning I once again did not have the chance to stop and chat, so I just waved the best I could with the things I was juggling and said lots and lots of hellos not sparing anyone a glance, those would have to do till the school goes on its shortbreak

I ran into the school building, which happened to be mostly cream in colour, heading towards the school's third library where the meeting was to hold. My school has four libraries but we chose the third library because students rarely go there

The ones that do go there are the students that actually intend to study. Student avoid that library because it's very close to the Admins office, thereby making it very easy for teachers or admins to catch delinquent students that use libraries as an hide out

Rounding into the Conner where the admin office was and I immediately collided with someone making me drop my things and loose my balance

Well, That some one happened to be a boy who fell on his butt due to the impact but I caught my myself and regained balance, you know being an athlete you learn a thing or two on balance control

After regaining balance I immediately took him by the arm and pulled him up not giving him an option to refuse or accept help because I really didn't have time to spare

I bent down to pick my bag and folders. Straightening up I saw him giving me a smile and looking at me strangely which was weird because I don't think I know him

"Ok, sorry, bye"I rushed out in one breath, and continued my race to the library

Looking back I saw the the boy still staring at me with that smile

"Well, that's weird"I muttered to my self but didn't really bother to ask question him because of time shortage and mostly I wasn't interested

I looked forward and ran to the meeting that I was officially 5mins late for.
