Chapter 4 - 4

It's been two days since the night of the Dead Girls' Night Out event and I'm still horrified from the death of Zoey. I can't even walk out of my house and say good morning to people, because they think I'm a murderer for what I did to the werewolf. I don't feel fully ashamed but I do have to take some responsibility for my actions. Hell, I was lucky that I didn't go to jail.

Then the phone rang, and I knew who was calling. My boss, Harry Winslow.

Of course, I answered the phone. "Yes, Harry?"

"Maya Angelina Jaxon, come to my office, now." I hated when he said my full name. It only means one thing. My ass is in trouble. Shit.

I sighed. "Why should I? People are already looking at me like they want to hang me from a tree."

"Maya, we can talk about your punishment, later. Just get your ass here, now." He raised his voice at the end.

"Fine."

We both hung up the phone.

As soon as I walked in the SBI, I sensed a odd vibe from my so-called coworkers, because they glared at me as soon as I walked in and I could tell that the receptionist, Chelsea Rock, was whispering something idiotic in Sophia's ear. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear it, but I didn't pay attention to it.

As I walked in Harry's office, he wasn't alone. It was Frank and Violetta Hathaway, and I could tell they hated me now.

"Ms. Jaxon, you remember Frank and Violetta Hathaway?" Harry asked.

I shook my head. "I'm guessing they're Trina and Zoey's parents."

"Why did you let our daughter die?" Violetta cried softly.

"Excuse me?" I frowned.

"It's your fault that our precious Zoey got mauled by a werewolf!" Frank raised his voice at me. "None of this would've happened if you brought her home before that fiasco happened."

"Well, obviously you're dumb 'cause y'all don't know the whole story then." I said. "So maybe if you ask your other daughter what happened, maybe you could forgive me because I did what I did. And I'm not apologizing for that."

"We did ask Trina, she said it was you who wanted Zoey dead in the first place." Violetta said.

"What?" I shouted. "She is lying! Why would I let someone, especially an innocent girl die like that? Huh? I would never."

"How do we know that you're telling the truth, dear?" Harry interrupted me. "You do have an anger problem."

"Because...I only kill werewolves and vampires who commit crimes. Not humans. And plus before Zoey died, she told me that Trina wanted Zoey to die, because she doesn't like her."

"Did she now?" Frank asked, lifted one eyebrow, and folded his arms across his chest.

I nodded. "On my grandmother's grave she said that to me."

"Well, I guess we believe you for now. If this happens again and if their daughter blames it on you, ever, you're fired. Do I make myself clear?"

I gave a nod. "Crystal."

"Sorry about that, Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway. We'll make sure next time a bigger punishment will be terminal."

"Very well, have a nice day, you two."

Harry smiled and waved, and killing Trina was still on my mind, I had so many plots in my head that it was totally illegal for me to describe it.

"Hey, Maya, wake up." Harry snapped his fingers.

I jerked a little to wake myself up. I didn't realize how focused I was until Harry interrupted my thinking. How rude.

"Are you okay, Maya?"

"Yeah." I said softly.

"Well there is another thing I want you and Killian to do."

"What is that?"

"Investigate the murder of Val."

My eyes widened. "I thought someone else is investigating Val's murder, why now?" I asked.

"We were going to, but then I got a call saying that our troops were attacked by daywalking vampires that same day."

"Well shit," I said. "Why not Sophia and Jose?"

"They're not capable of fighting daywalkers. They're not strong enough. But you and Killian are though."

"Killian can never be stronger than me." I told Harry. "I will never work with anyone but Val. I just want Val back. And I know there's nothing we could do to get her back, but I wish there was a way to get her back."

Harry nodded. "I understand."

I started crying again. I turned away from Harry so I was just staring at the door.

"Will you do investigate her murder, for me, please?"

I turned back to Harry. "Yes. I have to do it."

"Thank you, Ms. Jaxon. I recommend you to get some sleep. We'll worry about the investigation tomorrow morning."

I nodded. And I left Harry's office and went home to rest.

Even though I wasn't ready to accept the fact that Val is gone, but if I need closure then investigating her murder is the only option. And once I find which werewolf killed Val, I'd put its head on a silver platter.
