When Shadow-Walker entered I followed shortly after and found myself, not in a dark room like I had thought, but a large well lit room with chandeliers and candles everywhere and torches on the walls. The room was at least three times as big as the building appeared to be from the outside so I knew magic had to be used here in some way. I looked around nervously and clutched my staff. I knew nothing about how magic worked in this world, and I couldn't tell what any of these people believed about me from their blank expressions.
Shadow-Walker whispered into my ear, "When we reach the clearing in front of the man at the largest table we will bow to him, and only raise our heads when told to. If you do not do this, he may kill you where you stand." I gulped down my fear and nodded and bowed to the same extent as Shadow-Walker once we reached the aforementioned clearing. To my surprise while looking at the floor I saw a magic circle appear around us and gasped.
"Are you well, young mage, to gasp from bowing? What is the matter with this one Shadow-Walker?" The man that we were bowing to spoke.
Immediately Shadow-Walker spoke up, "He just finished healing from a goblin attack, but his injuries are completely healed there is nothing wrong now that I know of, Speak up stranger." I gulped again, and nervously spoke, "My apologies, I am not under any physical duress, I merely saw a circle similar, yet different, to the one that was in the room I was recovering in appear on the floor beneath us. It surprised me, that's all. Again, my apologies."
The whole hall went silent for a second, then two, then ten... Then everybody was talking at the same time. I couldn't hear anything except one mage who said, "That would mean either he is an aura detector, or he is stronger in magic than the Grand Magus. No aura detectors exist in the human species, and it's impossible that he is stronger than the Grand Magus, right?" I was surprised but kept my body in the bowed position.
"Rise, stand and look at me, young mage. I would see your eyes when you see a magic circle," The voice belonged to the Grand Magus so I stood up and met their eyes. Even looking at the Grand Magus I couldn't tell if they were a male or female, not that anybody here really looked masculine or feminine. In the Grand Magus' eyes I saw fire.
Nearly endless flames, and somewhere within those flames was a bubble that was about fifteen by fifteen feet wide. Within that bubble was another version of the Grand Magus. It clicked in my mind immediately, this was how much magic the Grand Magus could control. The larger the bubble the more magic you had, and whatever is outside the bubble is the element you could control.
I blinked and looked away because the Grand Magus didn't seem to notice and was now casting a minor spell. The spell circle appeared right in front of their hand this time and everybody except for the Grand Magus in front of me gasped. I was confused because I couldn't see it at the time, but magic circles that glowed purple were covering my eyes, allowing me to see all other magic circles. These mages could see them because they were more powerful than me so they could see my magic circles. The Grand Magus explained what happened and I nodded in thanks.
Shadow-Walker spoke again saying, "Grand Magus, When we were uncertain of his species I mixed an awakening circle with the containment circle. Immediately after he left the circle lightning filled his wounds and closed them as well as a small burst from his body that I blocked from harming anybody. Lightning is one of the rarest forms of magic isn't it?" Something was wrong with what she said but I couldn't place my finger on it.
Just because I couldn't figure out what it was doesn't mean the Grand Magus couldn't. "You see, you thought you found gold, but you actually found a gem amongst all gems. This young magi has at least detection magic, lightning magic, and discerning magic. Don't you? You saw my power, and you saw my element. Why don't you tell us what you saw." The Magus spoke calmly but with an aura of command.
AN: I'm shortening it because I don't feel like writing "Grand Magus" out every time
I nodded and spoke up, confidently for the first time today, "When we made eye contact I saw a field of endless flame. Within this flame nothing could survive, at least nothing without the protection of magic. Traveling through the fields of flame there was a softly glowing bubble about 15 feet long and 15 feet tall, within it was the Grand Magus. I don't know how I knew but I knew that the bubble shows how much magic you can use, and the element outside of the bubble is your main element. For the Grand Magus, there was also wind blowing through the flames, and items getting created before getting burned to ash before I could tell what they were."
