Have you ever thought that looks could kill? If you do, then this webtoon might right up your alley. Strap in folks because I'm about to cover My Assassin Girlfriend by agust_dee.
Author
Agust_dee is a young female writer who was born in the Philippines but currently lives in the United States. She's pretty much the definition of an avid comic book creator who's been drawing ever since she was young. Agust also is an avid webtoon reader and anime/k-drama watcher so you can have fun there.
Summary
Due to unforeseen circumstances, one Kaida Park was forced to become a gun for hire. Amongst her many assignments though this new one might be the hardest yet as she has to bodyguard the rich spoiled heir of one of the richest men in the world: one Kenji Chan(yes really). At first, two can't stand each other, but as they spend more time together, could it be possible that they can't live without each other as well?
Characters
Kaida Park: Your average everyday assassin. Kaida is withdrawn, antisocial and aggressive, but this more of a mask to hide her true feelings. Like I said in summary, Kaida didn't choose to become an assassin instead of using this as a way to protect someone close to her by her "employer." She views this as pretty much a prison of a life that she accepted until she met him.
Kenji Chan: Kenji is a young man who unfortunately grew up with the deaths of his brother and mother. To pass through the pain, Kenji grew up as a rude, mischievous, flirty brat. Despite all of this, though, he does have nice qualities, mostly just the fact that through his pride, he doesn't want to be a burden to the people he cares about and being fiercely protective over those under his employ.
Overview
The art for my Assassin Girlfriend is perfectly decent but does vastly improve as the story goes on. Everyone has a bit of a drawn on anime look towards them, but I feel like that the shading of colors in certain scenes improves vastly. Effectively the series works within its limitations rather well (rare grammar mistakes aside). Its overall comedic tone makes darker scenes all the more prominent. This is one of those stories that starts small and hits its stride when the plot gets going. I do also like how we see the obvious moral issues of being an assassin. Kaida and Kenji have obvious but heartwarming chemistry that makes their interactions cute and understandable.
Ironically I think that the real saving grace of this story is the author herself. Multiple chapters do a real good job of advertising her craft while at the same time answering fan questions and just plain interacting with them. While she has updated very consistently, she always makes up for it with multiple consecutive uploads. I also just really like how she even shows off other canvas webtoons in numerous holiday-related crossovers. She is a very passionate creator, and I hope more light shines her way.
Epilogue
This is one time where I hope you all decide to check out My Assassin Girlfriend since I do think it's going to ramp up in these next few chapters. Next time we meet, I will be shining a light on another webtoon that has taken my heart by storm.
