Chapter 28 - Escape

After I was positive that everyone had returned to their rooms or had fallen asleep, I pulled out my bag from the closet. I changed into black jeans, a shirt, and a jacket. I pulled on my boots and tied up my hair. My pocket knife was tucked securely in my pocket and I grabbed my wallet from a hidden nook. I had been collecting different kinds of currency for something like this. A wide variety of coins, slips of paper, and weird objects were in there. I grabbed any other money lying around and put in too.

Finally, I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote a note explaining where I was going. I told them that I would miss them and that I was sorry that I was breaking Archean's trust, but Lily was someone that mattered to me. I would do everything in my power to keep anyone that I loved safe, no matter what.

When I was finished, I grabbed my bag and left my room. Why didn't I just jump out the window or over the balcony? Well, it was a pretty far drop, and I didn't want to risk injuring myself. I crept along the hall, avoiding open doors and lighted hallways. I finally made it to the living room when someone grabbed me from behind. Desperately, I thrashed around, trying to break free without making too much noise.

"Amara, chill!" the person hissed. I calmed down. It was just Luka. Wait! My eyes widened and my heart raced. I threw his arms off me, seeing two bright yellow eyes glaring at me in the dark.

"Where do you think you are going?" Luka asked. I was deciding whether I should just run for it or to stay, but the possibility of everyone finding out was too dangerous. So, I did the only thing I could think of. "I'm just going to train outside."

I wanted to smack myself. Really? That was the best excuse I could think of?! Luka totally didn't believe me. "Amara, please be patient. We can get her some other way. Besides, you can't just go run off on your own!" Luka whispered. I shook my head furiously. "Luka, she is my cousin, and I'm going to do everything to protect her!"

"Not now and not on your own!" Luka snarled, starting to lose his patience. I glared back at him. "Luka, I am going whether you want me to or not!"

"Really? And how exactly are you going to do that? I'm not going to allow you off this property even if it results in violence."

Suddenly, an idea struck me. It might be childish and Luka might just get mad, but its worth the risk. "You owe me," I whispered, almost excited. Luka narrowed his eyes. "What?"

"Luka, you owe me!" I whispered. Luka's eyes widened. "Amara, don't you dare!" I grinned. Luka shook his head.

"No, no don't give me that look. Amara, I would never forgive myself if something happened to you, fully knowing that I could have stopped you." I sighed. I would have felt the same too. "Luka, please," I begged. "Lily needs me!"

"No!" Luka said, raising his voice. I flinched. At this point, we would wake up everyone with our arguing. I stared back at Luka. He seemed serious, and he was starting to inch toward me. I took a step back, avoiding his lunge. Before he could get to me, I turned and ran. I sprinted to the door, flinging it open and running into the yard. Unfortunately, it was night and the moon cast many shadows on the grass. Luka can travel through shadows, so I had to take the risk and run in the open. I hadn't figured out if I could travel through light yet, but right now would be a fantastic time.

I ran through the grass as fast as I could. Luka would appear in my line of vision and then disappear again. I didn't know if I would be able to outrun Luka, but one thing was for sure, I had to keep moving, no matter what. Suddenly, Luka appeared right behind me. I dodged and kept running. Somehow, I needed to get to the hangar. It was about a mile from the mansion, connected through an underground passage, but it was possible to reach without going underground. So, I switched directions.

At that moment, Luka tackled me. How he caught me, I have no idea. We crashed into the grass, wrestling with each other. The only way now was to knock Luka unconscious and get to the docking bay. I punched him in the stomach and kicked him in the face. Luka recovered and swung at me. I sidestepped and tripped him. He rolled out of the way just as I was about to hit him. He got up and grabbed me from behind, restraining me. I jerked back and banged my head with his. He staggered back, and I escaped. I pinned him and clamped my hand over his eyes.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, flashing my light and blinding Luka. He groaned as I knocked him unconscious and dragged him to a tree. I bound his feet and his legs by freezing them to the ground, making sure he couldn't escape when he woke up. My heart ached even more when I turned and left.

I ran for what seemed like an eternity, slipping through shadows and making my way to the underground hangar. I finally arrived to see a large square of metal in the ground. This was it. I was so close. I walked to a small hatch near one of the corners, broke the lock, and yanked it open. Carefully lowering myself into the whole, I closed the hatch behind me and descended the rungs. I avoided the few technicians that were awake and crept to a smaller ship. It was small, but fast, earning the name "The Peregrine". With a cone like body and arrow-like wings, it was the perfect ship. The only problem was that I didn't really know how to drive a ship. Crystal said she would help me, but we will see how that goes. I climbed into the cockpit and deposited my travel-bag next to me. Before shutting the windshield, I shot an icicle at the control panel, hitting the big red button that opened the two giant doors above me. They opened with a groan to the open night sky. The technicians, now alerted from the loud noise, came running in to see what was happening. I waved to them, their eyes widening when they recognized me.

Crystal told me everything to press, and I followed her directions as well as I could. Soon, the ship left the hangar and was flying away into the sky. I saw many lights in the mansion turn on as I flew away.

"I'm sorry, but this is something that I need to do, with or without you guys," I whispered as the mansion eventually vanished from view and the stars came to greet me.
