Sage had been walking around randomly for hours, not really knowing where she was going.
She hadn't noticed when the air turned cold, that the sun had already set, or that the few streetlights in this town had turned on.
While she walked she felt in full control, her thoughts so far away from the fight, or the calls, or the fact that someone was going to die later tonight. All that mattered at this moment was the fact that she was walking where she wanted without any of her problems following her.
Sadly, no matter how far you try to run, your problems will always catch up with you.
When the sun was completely behind the horizon and all of the stars shone brightly above her in the vast darkness of space, a bright light appeared several feet in front of her in the middle of the road.
The voice of reason in her head shouted at her to leave as she stared at the brilliant light in amazement.
Her feet inched closer to the ball that floated feet above the ground effortlessly. She watched it outshine the one streetlight around her, putting out enough light for any Christian who was paying attention to think it was the Second Coming.
She walked closer and closer until it was floating just a few inches in front of her face. Her hand lifted up without her brain telling it to do it.
Sage's fingers slowly reaching up to the strange orb. Her tips felt cold as she got closer to the orb. Just before she touched the light, it was gone.
It was suddenly several feet down the road, floating calmly as if it hadn't even moved.
Sage swallowed deeply, her heart rate rising in her chest.
Her mind screamed at her to stop, but she ignored it. Curiosity raced through her brain as she stepped closer to the orb, which was now far away from her.
She walked lazily towards the light yet again.
Inches away yet again, Sage simply watched the light hover in front of her face tauntingly, begging her to try to catch it.
Her hand shot out quickly this time. The coldness engulfed her hand before the light darted out of her reach again.
Over and over Sage played the same game until she didn't even realize what she was doing anymore. Curiosity won against the voice of reason in her head and suddenly nothing but the ball of light mattered.
Her feet led her against her will, not that she wanted to be anywhere else, to a place she didn't know.
She didn't even realize that the light had led her down a dirt road that she didn't know, or that she was now lost in the middle of nowhere. All she knew and all she cared about, was the light was still in front of her and that she was so close to catching it.
With her fingers just in front of the light, it was suddenly gone. It didn't fade out slowly into nothingness as you would expect, it was just gone as if it was blipped out of existence.
Plunged into darkness after being engulfed in light for so long, Sage now couldn't see anything.
She began to panic as she blinked repeatedly to try and get her vision back. Slowly, her vision came back, getting stronger with every blink she made.
She looked around to see woods surrounding her and a small building in front of her. The woods seemed to go on for miles each way it stretched. The building, which was only a few feet in front of her, was dirty and dingy, looking as if it could crumble into nothing at any given second.
Now that the light was gone so was her curiosity and her reason to stay.
With her anxiety rising Sage turned around quickly, ready to leave. As she went to turn, the light was back.
It shone proudly against the vast void of darkness in front of the building. Sage turned back around before she even had the chance to walk away.
It beckoned her closer and closer until her hand was able to rest on top of the door handle, had there been one. All that stood there was the hole for it to go.
As if something inside of her was switched off, the light no longer has an effect on her. The voice of reason was back and she was finally able to listen to it again.
It yelled at the top of its lungs, "get out now while you can".
That's all it took for her to understand how scary this whole thing was. The calls had been one thing, but being out in the woods, in the middle of the night, knowing that someone was getting murdered tonight, was scarier.
Her hands began to sweat as she turned around quickly before her breath got stuck in her chest.
A pitch-black silhouette darker than the night air around it stood at the mouth of the driveway only a few yards away. Even from this far she could tell it was much taller than any person she had ever met.
She gulped loudly as she took a small step backward but stopped immediately when she felt something behind her.
Her body shook in fear as she watched the figure in the distance slowly get closer before it broke out into a run towards her.
Sage gasped loudly and readied herself to run away but it didn't matter. Whatever was behind her swung its arm to the side before punching Sage in the side of the head.
The blinding pain was the last thing she felt before she fell to the ground. She lay there, watching the moon and stars, as he vision began to blink in and out.
The last thing she saw was the magnificent light dance in front of her face yet again begging for her to reach out and grab it.
