Chapter 24 - 24: Pay Attention

Erena's resonance is terrifying and so simple that it can be summed up in three effects:

First, she can alter the vision of those she touches.

Second, she can create illusions for a moment.

Third, spread her eyes around her.

Simple, right? Well, the details make it complicated. The first effect has a normal time limit of one minute unless she extends it by touching you again. The second effect is limited to copying what is in her field of vision for a maximum of six seconds elsewhere within that field.

And the third, oh boy, is what positions her as the most useful member of her team.

By revealing her third eye, she loses her normal vision and creates fifteen others that can appear at will anywhere other than a creature within a 66.6 meter radius. While she cannot see her surroundings directly, she sees everything the other fifteen eyes see and can consume them —close them —to apply one of the other enhanced effects.

The first does not require touching anyone, it is enough to close one eye for her to see her target to alter her vision until she deactivates the third effect of hers.

The second happens to last until she deactivates the third or comes true for those six seconds.

If not for the price she has to pay, it would be a dream power.

Knowing that information, Maryon's huge complaint made sense. It's that ... it was easy, an illusion that blocked the breathing girl, altering her vision again, if she was seriously feeling insecure, she could have shared the vision of those eyes while with another she used one of those techniques! She is not limited to closing one eye at a time.

What Maryon didn't know was why.

She didn't share her vision because Natsume was going to attack him, from predicting that it was obvious that she would use her eye better. She did it because he had to see something specific, it is a shame that increasing what you see does not mean that you observe better. Maryon saw it, but he paid no attention to the fact that... Andra needed help.

"Fuck!" Tears of blood flowed from Erena's blackened left eye. "Fuck!" she exploded in frustration and helplessness as she witnessed Andra's arm being broken.

From Erena's absurd perspective, the environment turned into a chess board, yes, one on the next table. Where the best you can do is fix your eyes to guide the allied side to victory, although their resonance allows her to add pieces or confuse their rivals, weren't comparable to removing pieces from the board. That's why the landscape in her eyes turned dark more easily, that's why she got frustrated.

For Maryon, Natsume, Echsos and Airys went unnoticed, the fatal combat at close range.

It is natural. The human mind doesn't process everything it sees, it discards most of the information it receives to focus on what it determines to be important, and although Erena entered that group called "exceptions", there was nothing she could do to bring another within to that world.

Garyon and Andra's fight was short, the winner was decided while Maryon suffered with the assassination attempt.

Andra's kick was shocking, precise, and painful, yet it didn't take Garyon half a second to grasp reality —he nearly passed out —and adjust to the course of the battle. Did the sight not serve? Well, he doesn't need it! It has always been an extra to him after his thirties.

Garyon closed his eyes and fully applied each of his resonance techniques, concentrated in a dense layer of invisible energy —by common standards —around him. That tall girl was not prey; she was a hunter. When she activated the resonance before no effect emerged, it was time to change that.

He concentrated on perceiving the closest soul around him, between flashes he found the girl's soul, firm, willing, immovable; a real headache. He ignored all the other souls outside a two-meter radius and exerted pressure on him again.

"DON'T RESIST!" was the message.

Andra, still lowering her leg, shuddered with such a suggestion. She knew Garyon's resonance was something ridiculous like mind control, so feeling that made her like never before.

"So to the soul... huh?" She smiled. If Garyon was the great ocean and he had her caught right in the middle of a storm, she was a magnificent Iceberg!

In the unique world Garyon had access to, in which souls were blurred concepts of the same color, the emotion that Andra's unleashed was a clear: FORCE ME.

Garyon resumed his stance to counterattack, Andra did the same. He felt how the girl's soul commanded her fist to go straight to his face, he used his left arm to block and seek a window of opportunity in her defense while continued to apply suggestions to her soul.

The surprise he got by blocking Andra's fist and also receiving a hook from her left him stunned.

"What the hell?!" he yelled inside his head. "I'm sure I blocked where she commanded her soul!"

He had a hard time processing it, which gave Andra more than enough time to land about seven blows to the stomach and face that he covered inefficiently. When he received the last blow and felt how she broke his nose, he understood what was happening.

"THE BRAT IS LIKE EHERON!"

The normal thing when using the resonance is that a portion of your soul moves away from your body and is consumed to do whatever it does, Garyon can perceive that change and that is why it is almost impossible to deceive him about your location even though he cannot see you —once within range there is nowhere to hide —with minimal exceptions.

She was one of those people who imbues an object, extends and/or takes the soul out of her body with the resonance.

Considering the resonance of manipulating chains of Eheron or even that of controlling his shadow of Seng, anyone without experience and knowledge of the subject would mistakenly believe that they consume small portions of energy to give orders to the chains and shadows, when in reality what happens is that the soul join with those elements as if they were part of the body and they constantly expend energy.

The very concept that limits and holds Layd from reaching his full potential.

Most people have hidden within them the need to use both energy injections —the Maryon resonance —and to mix their soul completely —the case of Eheron's chains —and in theory they can use either method to achieve varied results.

It is a subject that is difficult to explain even among veterans.

Indeed, no one understands it better than Garyon, because he is obliged to mix both methods in every possible way.

"What's going on?" he wondered retrospectively, his wisdom was a good indication, he only needed to understand the resonance of his adversary to stop being on the defensive, it did hurt.

It was then that two kicks —one to the ankle and one to the knee —broke his balance and left him open to further punishment. But what caught his attention was not the bruises Andra caused him therefore ... how she did to kick the ankle and knee of his left leg at the same time and from the same side.

Andra's luck ended on her twenty-third stroke.

Suddenly Garyon straightened up and dodged subsequent blows as if he could read Andra's mind —including those that no one has ever managed to avoid —and returned some of the pain with a powerful, accurate stretch of the arm that slammed into Andra's nose.

There the first red flag was raised before Erena's eyes.

"Did he just hit Andra?" she questioned the fidelity of her eyes after altering Natsume's vision.

Confused, she paid more attention to that fight that was supposed to be won.

"Why?" Andra received another punch on the cheek. "Why?" The four blows and two simultaneous legs of her were dodged like nothing. "WHY?!"

The only difference was that Garyon had half-opened his eyes, that shouldn't be enough to get him the ability to predict and avoid her special hits and blows.

A viewer unaware of Andra's resonance would be laughed at by the strange and extreme movements Garyon made for… well nothing. Sometimes it was enough to move the head a little to one side so as not to receive her fist in the face, but instead he stooped as well.

And that was because he had completely deciphered Andra's resonance.

Another person in his position would try to avoid the punch as stated before, so he would immediately regret feeling her knuckles go bald in that direction with nothing there.

Andra's resonance was to use her soul. Literally.

As if she had two overlapping bodies, she can perform all the movements that she can with her body — and more— with her soul, these movements are invisible to the eye and have exactly the qualities that those movements of Andra's healthy body would have.

In short, can use double of everything. Four arms, four legs, if he tied her, she would soon untie herself. If there were some, she would play video games that require both hands and eat at the same time.

That is why she was a formidable rival for Garyon, the literalness of having to use her soul for resonance had enlisted her to resist the suggestions of that psychopath. And also why Garyon was a high-ranking rival, being able to perceive her soul let him know how and where those invisible blows were coming from.

What Andra didn't notice was that her fists, her visible ones, were causing Garyon serious problems rather than the invisible ones she relied on so much.

And the lack of insight sealed her fate.

Garyon intercepted her wrist, and took the blows from Andra's soul like a champion.

Erena reacted like lightning.

She closed one eye. Only to watch that pathetic tactic don't work.

The copy of Andra who stood next to her to whip Garyon was immediately pushed aside as if he had sensed it —because he did —and with no time to lose Garyon gave her a horrendous shove in the elbow that broke her precious limb in half.
