Chapter 5 - Chapter 4- Seekers and Reapers

After the boy's introduction, he sat right at the back of the class, taking one of the two empty seats.

Throughout the entire hour of lesson, Hikari felt a cold feeling, as if she was being watched. This made her more uncomfortable than she had been in a long while and made time pass slower, so slow that even watching paint dry would be swifter.

What made this even worse, was the fact that she had a growing suspicion that the new student, Erik, was the one staring at her. Her face was already as red as a cherry from embarrassment, she just couldn't force herself to turn around, who knew, maybe she was wrong. Maybe if she turned around and stared at him, he would get the wrong idea and think that she liked him. Which she had already convinced herself wasn't the case as 'He wasn't her type, plus he reeks of trouble'.

...

From Erik's point of view there was no embarrassment, not enough to make his face change colour anyways. He was very fascinated at the girl's appearance, but also, the way she acted.

No female human had ever turned away from him when he stared at her. Usually, they'd just turn as bright as skyfruit and stare at him waiting to say something. (A/N~ skyfruit: a bright red fruit that grows in the sky in the summer months, only in certain lands, that haven't been mentioned in the story yet). However, this girl seemed to, sure have turned red, but looked away from his gaze. This quality reminded him of something, something non-human.

At that thought , his slightly tanned face turned grim. Is she a threat? Is she dangerous? Could she be here to eliminate the Seeker? At the thought of that, he clenched his hands, his left had a intricately carved ring on his middle finger, the added pressure caused the ring to rub into his skin, making him bleed. One after another, several drops of dark red liquid splattered onto the ground, making a noise that sounded a lot like rain sound through the class.

Hearing the patter, the teacher looked around. He was a short old man, probably in his 50s, his hair was a dark grey shade and he wore thick glasses on his abnormally large nose. Just then, the boy seated in the desk next to Erik fainted.

Great, the blood scared him. Well, at least Erik could quite safely say he wasn't the Seeker. Though, he never originally thought it was him anyways, he was too...weak, and his appearance alone, made him look geeky and fragile. That wasn't any good in any Seeker. A Seeker needed to be strong, agile and quick-witted; not really smart and terrible at physical exercise.

The Seeker, after all, was a hero. He is a legend known to be the saviour of Erik's kind. Every generation one Seeker was chosen. The minute an old Seeker died, a brand new one would be chosen. The legend said: 'A Seeker different from the rest, will either turn our future to gold, if in hands of one of our best, or will determine our return to the days of old'.

Erik, of course, was his generation's best- he is the smartest and strongest (and also the most arrogant at times), therefore he was the one who would have to find the Seeker. His role is often referred to as a 'Reaper'. This was because, their role is to search for Seekers, often leading to their untimely deaths, or the deaths of others.
