We were able to get all the bodies to the courthouse. The gallery was transformed into a sick ward. Benches were pushed together to create beds for the injured males to lay on.
The beasts which were in the woods earlier were no longer in sight. Humans laid motionless before us. Puddles of blood were everywhere.
The scene was hideous enough to bring bile to my mouth. A vampire who hated the sight of blood; what a joke.
Female doctors were created as they moved to assist the injured men. Heather attended to Drew. Luckily, his injury wasn't as bad as the others. His small body scratches, and broken neck was almost healed. Eric's spine was also mending thanks to Lindsay's hard work. Though Sabrina was his girlfriend, she was glued to Colin's side. A washcloth was held at Colin's throat while spells poured from her lips. Whatever she was doing seemed to be working because he was still alive. To their left, Ashley held Courtney in a throat lock while Jake attempted surgery on Josh's shoulder. The visual bone was pushed back in place as blood flowed down his arm to the puddle on the floor. No doubt the procedure was painful. Yet, Josh neither moved nor made a sound. The only evidence he was alive was the faint beating of his heart.
A shimmer caught my eyes and I swiveled around to face Amy about to slit Kyle's wrist. Kyle was chained by vines — to suppress his powers— on benches before the gallery. On instinct, I rushed to his side, shoving Amy away from him. She staggered a few times before steadying herself.
"What are you doing?" I gritted out.
Her grip on the knife tightened. "I don't have time for this. We need his blood to heal the others." A waved hand was thrown behind her at the gallery of injured men.
She took a step forward and I took one too. Green eyes widened then her shoulders drooped. Amy's gaze flickered elsewhere when she whispered, "He's going to die if he doesn't drink Kyle's blood."
My eyes followed hers and landed on Brian's body stretched on the two joined tables. Unlike the other men, his body was soaked with perspiration and blood. If it wasn't for the thick red syrup leaking from the hole in his neck, we would have been able to see inside the wound. However, that wasn't the only alarming evidence: his skin color had now changed to blue.
Yet, I didn't feel an ounce of sympathy for him. "Brian's a vampire. He'll heal."
Amy sighed aloud. "Don't you get it?" Her pitch was higher than before. "Kyle is not a normal werewolf. His bite if not cured by his blood can kill any other species; vampire or not."
My gaze slid over Brian again. He didn't look as if he was healing. If anything, he looked worse than when he came in.
The memory of Kyle ripping the flesh of his neck with his teeth floated across my mind. How Kyle had looked when he did it. I should be upset. After all, Brian was made from my blood. I should be frustrated or sad, but I didn't. Questions swirled in my brain. What had Brian done to send Kyle into rage? Last night they seemed friendly. Close. Now they weren't. Why? What changed?
Nevertheless, I couldn't let anything happen to Brian. I had made that vow centuries ago. Surely, it shouldn't be broken now. Especially for a wolf who hated me.
"Brianna, please," Amy pleaded.
My attention returned to Kyle. "Won't he bleed out if you slit his wrist?"
"He heels twice as fast as any of us," came Amy's instant reply.
A statement which appeared to be true. All the injuries Kyle had earlier were gone, leaving blood stains as reminders of what was once there.
Yet, the fact didn't soothe my concerns. "We should probably cast a spell before you stick a sharp knife in his skin. We can't afford for him to wake up."
Amy shook her head. "No, spells irritate him. They make him angry and we don't need an angrier Kyle running around."
I nodded in agreement. If the Kyle I saw today wasn't at his angriest then I wouldn't want to see that side of him.
With a released sigh, I stepped aside and beckoned for Amy to do her task. At the go-ahead, she grabbed a metallic bowl sitting beside Brian, then walked over to Kyle. Her gaze never left mine until she sliced his wrist and set it in her bowl. When he flinched Amy and I tensed. Instead of waking up, he settled back down. A chorus of sighs followed.
A gush of blood leaked from the new wound. It trickled down his fingers before drumming in the bottom of the bowl.
Within seconds the wound started pinching together, closing back up. My eyes widened at how fast he was healing. When Amy had said Kyle could heal fast, I never thought it would be this fast. However, before the wound got a chance to heal, Amy ran the knife along with the spot, having it reopened.
My heart skipped a beat and I turned away.
Why did I care anyway? Amy knew what was best for her cousin. If she didn't feel anything while slitting his wrist, who was I to harbor such feelings?
A sigh left my lips and I settled my gaze on the others, trying to block out each swishing from the knife, and drumming of Kyle's blood into the bowl.
Amy continued her barbaric act until the metal bowl was filled with blood. She cautiously rested his hand against his side then went to the others. Her faint humming danced in the room while she attended to the injured men. Each man drank, going up the line from the least injury to the near-death experience. All done, Amy rested the empty bowl on the table next to Brian.
"What should we do now?" Ashley asked.
