There Athena stood in the middle of it all. Her body shaking in fear. Never had she felt like this in the midst of war. She was the supposed to be the goddess of wisdom and warfare and yet, there she was standing in the middle of the battlefield frozen and unable to think.
Turmoil rained down all around her. Everyone had a role to play for the survival of the Earth and of the future. She could not risk losing her concentration now. Being out of the fight could mean the difference between victory or defeat... but as of right now, she couldn't do anything. Her legs almost gave out on her and let her fall had she not snap out of the trance that she was in.
Her mind was one of the most powerful weapons in existence and it is not going to fail her now. Athena snapped out of it. Everything came back into focus in an instant. Athena took a deep breath and gathered all the courage she could conjure and composed herself. She's the leader of this mission and she needs to act like it.
Looking back at her from a distance was Zeus. Her father had a smile on his face, both of sorrow and pride. He knew that this was going to be the last time they will get to see each other again. Athena tried as hard as she could to hold back her tears but she failed as a drop rolled down her cheek. Stay strong, this is bigger than any one of us, she thought.
Next to Zeus was Set and Nepthys. They were too sending off their child to be a saviour in this war that they had already lost. The god of chaos, Set, had never showed emotion but today, he was so sorrowful. Athena knew him and the way he treated his son. Set was never there for his son and now he will never have a chance to be. The regret that hung over him seemed almost visible, like metal chains weighing down those broad shoulders.
Anubis turned to Athena. His eyes, like hers, scream sadness and distress. His grip on his scepter tightened and his heart raced faster. He came over and grabbed Athena's hand. She could feel it was cold. Colder than it had always been.
"Don't worry. We'll get through this." Said a voice from behind them. Loki placed himself between the goddess of wisdom and the god of the dead. He was smiling. Hopeful and warm. Almost manifesting safety and comfort in this awful and muddy field littered with death and destruction.
He tried to comfort them both as best as he could. It definitely worked on Anubis when Loki put his hand on his shoulder. The reassurance of a fellow comrade. No, not just an ally, a friend. Athena, on the other hand, was trembling when Loki held her close. Her eyes were still locked with her father's. Zeus turned his gaze from his daughter to Loki for a brief moment. Zeus didn't need to say a word for Loki to understand. His eyes said, take care of her. Loki nodded.
"Alright. Get ready." Isis, Anubis's aunt, intervened, "Now remember, don't fight it. Let yourself fall asleep. Trust in the magic and don't push yourself to wake up. Your awakening will come when the time is right."
"And good luck." wished Oya who was standing next to Isis and Hecate. The three the goddesses of magic worked together to cast a spell that would kill any one of them had they done it alone by themselves.
Athena made last minute checks. Aegis, the shield gifted to her by her father was strapped neatly on her left forearm and in her other hand was Warmonger, her trusty spear. She turned and looked behind her to see stacks of weapons, objects and belongings of the older gods piled. That was their mission. To protect those last remaining powers of the gods so that one day, they'll be able to find warriors that will help them drive back the enemy once and for all. Will the plan work? Only time will tell.
Just as Athena was turning her head, she saw a huge energy bolt coming right at them. Before anyone could react, an enormous dragon-like creature flew into its path and taking the full damage of the blast. Sacrificing its life to save everyone there.
Kukulkan, the winged and feathered serpent god roared in pain as he fell on his side. His essence slowly faded as his life force diminished. His emerald scales began to be swept away like leaves being blown by the wind. In the end, the only trace of him left behind was a bright red gem on the ground.
Athena turned immediately to the three goddesses, "Now!" She yelled defiantly over the roaring explosions of the battle before turning to look at her father on last time. Then, everything went black.
