He stares into my eyes and that's when I notice he has emerald green eyes. I feel time stop, staring into this stranger's green eyes. I've always loved green eyes. The last time I saw a pair of green eyes… was my dad's. But instead of his making me feel distressed, they make me feel... relaxed.
"Go home, Kinsley."
That statement snaps me out of my trance and I watch him tear the envelope into pieces which should be impossible since it's made of cardboard paper.
"Asshole!" I yell, staring down at the ruined letter where I poured out all of my feelings for Adrian.
I won't cry.
I look back up at him, angrily and he stares back at me with a hard expression.
Oh hell! Why is this freak ass mad? I'm the one who should be mad!
"At least you feel something towards me, that's better than you not knowing of my existence."
What?
"You should go back to Jenny she's really worried," He pauses and shoves his hands into his jean pockets as he motions his head to my phone in my hand. "considering how your phone's been buzzing."
I just stand there in front of him, staring angrily at him, feeling my rage boil and unable to do anything about it. At this rate, I'm not even concerned as to why he knows my best friend's name.
"Go home, Kinsley."
"Screw you!" I yell. "Hell, I am not going home! I guess you don't know me that well after all. Yes, I am going to go but it's not home but to the 24 hours convenient store and get back all these items and if you dare cross my path again, I will destroy you." I threaten with livid eyes.
I don't wait for his reaction or his effing response, I grab my duffel bag, turn around and begin walking away from him.
Once again, the lights turn off. Complete darkness taking over. Then I stop in my tracks and curse myself for forgetting the flashlight, which apparently has died.
Then the lights turn back on and I frown. I turn back around to see the same blonde haired boy still standing in front of Adrian's locker with a small remote– actually, the light controller in his hands.
Of course, this asshole has the school light's controller.
"How did you get that?" I ask. There is something about him I can't quite make out.
"Go home."
I laugh dryly. "You seem to enjoy tormenting me. Let's see how you enjoy it when I tell the Principal, a freak broke into the school. I'm guessing you're the reason the door wasn't shut." I smile confidently, feeling like I have won the battle.
Then he smiles, a real smile. "Feels good to be smart, doesn't it?"
I gasp. Is he mocking me?
"But how do you explain how you knew I was in school at this hour? You'd only be exposing yourself."
I glare at him. Smart ass.
"Go home, Kinsley."
He's still at that?
"Mister, no one tells me what to do." I point a finger at him them look him up and down with distaste. "I'm going to the convenient store."
With that, I turn around and begin walking but the lights go off again, causing me to halt.
"Oh! Would you turn the goddamn lights on?" I yell.
"Only if you agree to go home." I hear him say behind me and I scoff.
"In your dreams."
Then the lights turn on and I raise a foot to begin walking but the lights turn off again. The lights continue to flicker on and off and I exhale tiredly with only one thought in my mind: This really is a freak ass.
My phone buzzes and giving up on this jackass, I take it out and read the message.
Jen: OH MY… Kinsley! What's going on, the light's keep coming on and off!
Jen: Is the school haunted? Is there a ghost with you right now?
Jen: Are you still there? I told you we shouldn't have come.
Jen: Why aren't you replying? You're alive right?
Gee..
I shove the phone back in my pocket, getting stressed out with this totally eventful night.
"Fine! I'll go home!" I yell.
The lights stop flickering and stay on.
"Okay." I hear him say behind me.
I turn around to see him put the light controller into his jeans.
"Sweet dreams Kinsley." He smiles at me and then he turns around, walking further into the school then disappearing in a corner.
I'll go home my ass.
I immediately run back to Adrian's locker and pick up my dead flashlight then I almost weep at the destroyed birthday gifts. With the duffel bag and flashlight in hand, I run out of the school to meet Jenny.
I come to a halt once I burst out the doors-panting as cold air hits my senses, my straight blonde hair moving over my face- to see Jenny with her hands over her worried face, her floral dress somehow glowing under the head lamp. I continue panting as Jenny rushes over to me.
"Gosh Kins! Are you okay?"
I summon the strength to lift myself up and talk to her, "Jenny listen, we have to go to the convenient store and get back those things—"
Her eyes widen more. "What? No, we have to go home. My dad just called me, he found out I wasn't in bed and my car's missing!"
I stare at her for two seconds, letting her words sink in as I feel my whole body go cold and hear the crickets chirping loudly.
"Shit."
"Come on. Lets go!" she says as she runs to the driver's seat.
"Yeah you're right." I quickly follow suit and jump into the passenger seat.
"I can't believe this is happening. I'm in so much trouble." Jenny mumbles and I suddenly feel bad about this.
There are a lot of times Jenny gets into trouble because of me but that's with the school. I have never gotten her into trouble with her home because I know how wrong and how bad that will be. Now she has gotten into trouble with her father because she's out at midnight helping her stupid best friend with her stupid crush.
"Jenny, I'm so sorry, I didn't know any of this would happen." I say. I can even hear the guiltiness in my own voice.
She doesn't reply me but stares straight at the road, driving at legal speed as usual, even if she's freaking out right now.
Feeling bad that nothing went as planned, I stare out the window, back at the school.
The lights are still on.
When we were about to go on this birthday present mission for Adrian, I did listen to Jenny's words: "What if we get caught?" but I knew if we did get caught or get in trouble, it will be for a good cause since I put Adrian's present in his locker. But we did get caught and we got into trouble but Adrian's present wasn't set. Now I feel like I got my best friend in trouble over nothing.
I watch as the school's lights finally turn off.
Now I'm wondering what's going to happen in a few hours, when the day gets bright and a new school day starts.
^^
Since a little girl, I've always been confident in my self, because I know what I want to do, what I want to say and how I want it. There's not a moment I feel insecure or inferior. Even when something bad happens I still find a way to stand tall, so I have never felt that way. But today… today is the first time I fucking felt insecure and inferior.
*5 hours after breaking into the school.*
I stand in front of the mirror as I stare at my reflection, showing my outfit: tight, light blue jeans, dark wine colored shirt and black sneakers. I exhale lightly, brushing my hands through my straight blonde hair which is past my shoulders as usual. I take a step closer to examine my face; lip gloss on, powder already applied, eyebrows brushed.
I turn around to stare at my bed which has all of the clothes I have recently tried on and taken off. Then I sigh, for the tenth time this morning, thinking about what I have so desperately tried not to think of.
Even if I go to school naked, he probably still won't notice me.
I groan and plump down on my bed, laying on it as I stare at the ceiling. I lift myself up from the bed so I'm sitting as I stare out my window at the bright sky.
I will have gotten a chance if only that asshole didn't show up. Thinking about what happened just a few hours ago, my heart drops because I only made things more complicated for myself. Today's his birthday and I have no present for him even though I planned the whole thing for weeks, there's also no way for him to know of my existence and right now I feel like some pathetic loser. Something about this new day, Friday, makes me uneasy and I don't know what it is.
"Maybe I shouldn't go to school today, I could just say I'm sick." I say to myself.
