Nikola's POV
"Why can't you come with me?" I ask my brother.
He bites the inside of his cheek and meets my eyes.
"I'm sorry, Nikky, but not yet?" he says carefully.
I am struggling to figure out what I am feeling. Whatever that dreamworld was, it didn't have a crown on my head. A part of me wants to rebel against it, but another part of me craves the ability to honour my family name. To take up the mantle and teach all of those that conspired against my father, the Achebe line is not easily overcome.
But here I am, standing in front of my brother – the rightful king of Knysna – of Africa. What kind of sister would I be to stand against him, even with his permission?
I want what that dream promised me. I want my brother and our family. I want to be able to make my father proud and see my mother smile at me on my wedding day. I want to have Sammy by my side and Melissa in my arms. I may even want to see Riley on the day…
