Growing up in the Cape Flats is a sort of perverse fairytale, one with a thousand villains and only one happy ending. Getting out. At least that's what everyone in my family told me. It took me travelling to the other side of the world to figure out that my entire family was wrong.
Being born in Cape Town, Athlone is not a death sentence. It may not look impressive on a CV but it's home. With a clear view of Table mountain and the Kaapse Klopse always in reach, it's the closest to home I've ever felt.
