Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 : Burning At Stake

Cheers erupted from the audience.

They demanded more and more, savouring each part of the show the circus put on. The acting and tricks they had up their sleeve looked so realistic that they actually were real. They payed the ticket price, so they deserve the real thing.

First up was a little teaser. The lights were shut off, all attention was being paid to a bulky man with a candle in his grasp. The small flame was flickering. A spotlight then struck onto a girl, a bit away from Ace. She was tied to a pole surrounded by hay, and for your interest, her name was Bloody Mary. She was as stunning as her name, dressed in the most exquisite, handmade rouge dress. Her eyes were dripping blood, leaving lines dripping down onto her parted lips. She looked calm. The exact opposite reflection of the audience though. Exactly what the circus wanted.

Vlad stared up to the crowd, dropping the candle. An audible gasp could he heard suddenly. The thread laying on the floor lit up, brightly, inching its way like a snake towards Mary.

A smoulder began, then turning into a flame, increasing its size every second. She still appeared lackadaisical, as if almost careless that the roaring flame now began eating away , centimetres away from her feet. Closing her eyes, she exhaled. Even her make-up began drooping due to the intense heat being emitted.

A flick could be heard.

The audience yelled. Screamed. Cried out. Shouted in every possible way.

Her dress had caught fire now. She was being burnt at stake.

He flew into the blaze. Quite swiftly in fact, as if he were a crow. .

A few seconds went by. Nothing. A few more seconds went by. Nothing except a conflagration. That's when everything stopped for a brief minute. They all gawked.

Stood right behind the audience was Joker holding the Queen of cards.

The immense audience cheered so much that she was certain her eardrums would pop. She looked at the tip of her extravagant dress. It was burnt. Slightly. Raising an eyebrow up towards Joker, he tensed letting out a little mime : 'Sorry'.

Behind the set, she hit him with everything she could get a hand on : from hardback books to heavy ornaments. It'd been an hour since the audience had left, over-satisfied and absolutely aghast.

''YOU COULD'VE GOT ME KILLED. I AIN'T SOME BLOODY MARY THAT CAN COME BACK AS A GHOST AND HAUNT LITTLE KIDS. WHAT IF I HAD DIED?.''

A short, snappy response of ''But you didn't'', fuelled her anger even more. A pair of twins, stood behind her at a safe distance, smirked , each glancing at each other, mouthing unwanted and not-so-compulsory comments. Ace head locked them both, laughing richly, bellowing out :

''Black Jacks, remember to never piss of a woman. Don't ruin her dress.''

This time the black jacks grinned with the bulky Ace, only to be hushed by a sudden hand gesture from Joker. He let out an exasperated sigh, agreeing with whatever Queen babbled and accused him of, ending up apologising countless times.

To be honest, she never completely forgave him for that.
