"I guess I won the bet," I crowed and checked the date on my phone. "I didn't think he'd be this slow. He half works with us and he really didn't check to see if I was in on it?"
"I don't think he cares about you," Jackson muttered. "Unless he realizes you were in it with me tagging along. Adrien's gonna take the fall for it though. Just you wait."
"Oh. Did Jordan send you everything you needed?"
"I told him to keep it. It's better we use that for the greater good. Keep me out of it."
"He's mental. You know he's not going to donate it or anything. The next thing we know, he might be planning to make another Lexi."
Jackson looked at me like I'd said the world was ending. He grinned and shook his head. I was being funny, but Jordan had done it before. It didn't turn out like any of us had planned, but it happened. I can never forget the look on his face when he realized he needed more than just what he had. If this one goes wrong, I fear he'll go further to get a doppelganger.
"Let me call Adrien. I want to see if Asher has talked to him yet," I said.
"Sure. Don't stay on too long." Jackson raised a brow.
Whatever.
"Hey, how's it going over there?" I asked.
"...What do you mean?" Adrien sounded genuinely confused.
"I thought Asher would have been over there by now," I said. "I thought he'd assume this was all your fault."
"He knows Jackson is involved. He also knows Jackson and I hate each other. The hell I want to do that to him?" He scoffed like I'd really said something stupid.
"...Just asking."
"Well, have you gone to see Lexi? I heard she woke up earlier this week. Asher went to visit her Wednesday, so...I think you should at least pretend you cared for her health."
"I should, shouldn't I?"
Adrien hung up before I could actually say I would. It's not like he cares if I visit my soon to be ex-wife. But, in respect for her reputation, I'll go visit her and pretend I care just a tiny bit.
"What'd he say?" Jackson asked.
"I'm going to visit Lexi."
"Really. I didn't think he cared that much."
"I'm going to visit Lexi."

The hospital loomed over me as I stared at it. Lexi had been moved to this hospital after the scare she gave us last week. I thought she wouldn't wake up, but someone had been praying. The doctors say she was in the vegetative state for about three days before she fully woke up. I couldn't care less, but I could tell they wanted me to come visit. Or was hoping I would as her husband.
The earthquake that had happened two weeks ago from today hadn't been that bad. Most of the city lost power, but by two days ago we were back to normal. At least it got the media's mind off of Lexi and I. The company was managing well under Brad who refused to let me step foot in the place again. Makes sense. In a matter of time, Davenport will be dead. Lexi will be the real CEO of the company unless Natasha wants a cut.
I took a deep breath and walked in. The cool air slapped me in the face, making me stumble. Let's get this over with. The sooner I asked to visit her, the sooner I could get out of here. I had a date with Sha'Kayla in less than an hour. I plan on spending all the free time I have with her tonight.
A doctor approached me as I stood at the front desk. He didn't give me a look that said he was wary of my presence. He looked like he took his job seriously and didn't give a crap about trashy husbands and broken relationships. The clipboard in his hands made him seem more professional. If not for the messy hair, I would have said he looked pretty put together. Someone's had a rough morning.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Thompson. I'm Dr. Shane. I work alongside Dr. Thibault and some others while taking care of your wife," he said. "I have something I want to discuss with you before I take you up to her room."
"Of course. I'll help with whatever I can." I put on a smile.
"Just follow me this way."
We walked to his office. It was nice. Too flashy, but nice.
"I want to say I'm glad you came to visit today. I was going to call, but fate has its ways. Lexi has been going through a lot since she's woken up. She does physical therapy everyday. Speech therapy is looking good. Now...we had a therapist come in to help her get into what's been happening around her. It was going well up until Thursday morning."
"What happened?"
"Dr. Ronan was doing the morning routine when he noticed her room was a little quiet. He found her in her bathroom dry heaving. She was saying sorry over and over again to Mr. Monteil who paid her an unauthorized visit Wednesday afternoon. When asked if she remembered her name, she told him no. He asked what she last remembered and she said physical therapy."
"There shouldn't be anything wrong with that. You said she does it everyday."
"Except Tuesday and Wednesday. The last session she had was Monday night. Do you see the problem, Mr. Thompson? Your wife isn't as fine as she's pretending to be. Amnesia is a high probability when waking up from a coma. I didn't think it would happen to her since it was only for like two and a half weeks. I was wrong. Her head injuries are one thing."
"Are you saying she's not the woman she was before the coma?"
"Exactly. I don't want to make you feel obligated to take care of her, but I'd like to have you look at the list of treatments we think she might need. Just tell me what you think we should do. What's good for her. It's up to you."
Up to me...
Lexi threw herself at me. Like literally. I almost hit the wall trying to keep myself steady. This woman is crazy. I'm relieved we won't be together much longer. Her happiness didn't last that long.
"We're getting a divorce," I said.
She dropped off me like a bird being shot out of the sky. Pitiful. I thought she'd at least remember something like that. Why remember me, but don't not why you hate me?
"...Sorry. Just had to put that out there."
"Why?" she asked.
"Why what?" I didn't see the need to answer her.
"Why are we getting a divorce?"
"You wanted it. Something along the lines of not wanting to be in a relationship with a man who was brutally honest, a cheater, and didn't care about his family."
"Apparently not..."
This wench.
"We go to court next week. I suggest you stop playing the doctors and come back to your senses. This is a serious matter, Lexi."
"Stop playing the doctors? Come back to my senses? I haven't done anything wrong."
"You expect Dominic and Jasmine to believe that? Vincent..."
"Huh? What do they have to do with anything?"
"Of course your children care about your wellbeing. Imagine if you don't remember them anymore and they can't tell if you're kidding."
"...I didn't--"
"Whatever. The doctor told me that you might have amnesia. If you don't get the right treatment for this, who knows what can happen to you? You can say goodbye to your kids. Possibly forever."
"Why would I forget my own kids?" she screeched. "I'm not like you. I know what's important to me. This treatment they want me to get isn't going to help me any more than you are right now."
"Lexi, I'm doing the best I can with cooperating with the doctors," I argued. "Leaving Schizophrenia and amnesia unchecked isn't good for your health. I worry for you."
"Well don't. I don't want anyone's help."
I grabbed Lexi's hands in mine and looked her in the eye. She needed to understand that I wasn't playing around with her. With amnesia comes the Schizoaffective disorder she shared with her brother. I don't know if it's going to happen now that she knows everything. Lexi could flip-flop with her emotions at any time. I wasn't ready for that. The kids wouldn't be safe with her.
What I feared would happen sooner or later, I noticed the change in Lexi's behavior. They were brimming with tears just a few seconds ago. Now she looked like she could kill me if she really wanted to. I don't know if she remembers anything or I'm just paranoid. She did have random mood swings before the shooting. Lexi snatched her hands away from mine.
"Why are you here?" she demanded.
"...We were talking about your treatment, Lexi," I said.
"Holding hands? Don't you lie to me."
"What could we possibly be talking about then?"
She was silent, but moved back to her bed. I stayed by the door.
"Just leave, will you? I don't want to see anyone right now. It's not like everyone's been dying to see me anyway."
"I've been busy..."
"With what? Or should I ask who? I guess Sha'Kayla can't wait to have you tonight. Or Samantha. Whoever you think is nice today."
"It's not like that, Lexi. I swear you're overreacting." I pushed a hand through my hair. "If you're not in your right mind by the time we go to court, how will you keep the kids? You'll never get to see them again. In your current state...you probably won't remember them."
"Are you trying to jinx me?" Lexi scoffed. "When we go to court, you're going to wish you hadn't made a deal to buy my happiness."
"Whatever. It's best you just get the treatment and be ready. I will."
"Get. Out."
I left the room without another word. Well that was fun. I guess you can only get through the head of the sane. I'll try again another time.
