Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

It was a normal evening on the island of St. Nevis, maybe a little cold for end of June. Makaio did have a good day. In his bag he had some full wallets, apples and even a big piece of cheese. He knew that what he was doing was wrong, but what should he do otherwise? The cold wind stopped his train of thoughts. His long, messy dark hair fell in his face, and he put up the hood of his gray hoodie. The rather small 17-years old threw the bag over his shoulder, so he would have both his hands free. Makaio took a curve into a dead end, looking over his shoulder if noone was there. He than jumped up the Wall and climped over it. There was not a single light on the other side, but you could still recognize a tall, but very thin figure.

The thief went towards the silhuette and took of his Hood. "Makaio" said the figure in a deep male voice, which was filled with both harshness and a bit of worry. "You are the last one, were where you?" He signed the smaller one to follow him while he spoke, walking towards a rusty iron door. Makaio ran after him. "Sorry Peet" he gasped for air, his lungs got the best of him sometimes. "I wanted to come earlier, but was stopped. But I made some good catches, look!" He opened the bag so Pete, who's real name was Peeter, could look in it. The latter only gave a short nod and opened the door with a loud 'shreeeeeeeeeeeg' Noice. On the other side was a short hallway with two doors on either side, as well as on the opposite side. The 17-Year old knew this place only too well, as he basically lived here for now over 10 years.

Peet switched on the light in the corridor, and you could now see his almost perfect face. He had short, red hair, freckles and prominent cheek bones. His skin was very pale and his eyes were maybe a tad too far apart. But there was also something else about his eyes; Above and under his right eye was a thin, yet prominent scar, and the eye in between was a milky white colour and obviously blind. The other eye was of a forest green, and had brown spots, that got more frequent towards the pupil. Makaio had often asked himself how he got this scar, but he had never popped the question.

He took an apple and gave it to Peeter. "Thanks for waiting, bro" He than walked through the door opposite of the two boys. The door revealed a big room, with a lot of matresses on the floor for the about 30 teens and children who lived there. Most of them where Orphans like him and Peet, and didn't have any money to get to the next island. There was no propper Orphonage on the Island, which was why most "problematic children", who couldn't go to friends or family were on the street.

Makaio went to his matress and put down his bag. He took another apple and bit into it. It was good, juicy yet crisp. He layed down and stared up at the celing. Others in his age would go to college soon, and here he was, living mostly on the street and pickpocketing innocent people. He didn't like to do it, but it was necessary if he wanted to stay in the "Wolf's cave". The only thing positiv was that he also earned money by puplishing little poems in the papers. It was easy money, but it wasn't even enough to go to school. He wanted to study Law in New York and work as a juinor writer for a History magazine.

He loved History. It showed that even the worst childhood and yough could turn into someone great. His favourite example was the founding father Alexander Hamilton. Makaio and him had quiet a bit in common, only that the politician actually made it to something. Both got left alone by their father, Hamilton with 10, Makaio was 5 years back then. Less then three years later, both lost their Mother by an Illness. Makaio's mother- who had also been a horrible person- died from cancer. After her death, the almost 8 years old Makaio and his sisters were alone on the street. The Brohmson-Girls now both lifed with their Partners. The older one, Elizabeth, has moved to Manhattan with her Girlfriend almost two years back, and the two of them haven't spoken since. The middle child, Margereth, was together with the big brother of the Horrit-twins, two kids in Makaio's class. They met every now and then, but still rare.

He stood up for a moment, sitting next to the matress so he could lift it up. He took a letter from underneath and let the improvised bed fall down. He made himself comfortable again and looked at the little "package" he had in his hands. The letter included the proposing of Makaio for a Scholarship for a College in NYC he got from his class teacher. With a clamp fixated on the letter was another, smaller one, with the words "For the flight" in big letters on it. His whole class has put together for it. The teen had to smile, but this smile soon turned into a frown. He already had this for over a month, and if he didn't send it soon, he would never get the scholarship he wanted so bad. But, was he sure about that? Yes, 100%. So what held him back? Nothing he decided and went back to the exit to send of the letter at the next mail station.
