Chapter 1 - Prolog

A seer visited my village when I was 5. She would travel the world, tattooing symbols of people's futures. Her prices varied, from families' life savings to favors, or sometimes, nothing at all. When she came to my village, the royal family came as well. They offered her anything she wanted to tattoo their son; land, money, servants. But she refused.

The seer only tattooed one person from my village. Families with money stashed away, just waiting for her to arrive, were turned down. When she saw me, she waved me over and took my hand, leading me to the tent she'd set up. My parents followed, my father telling her we had no money. She told him not to worry, and waved him away.

When she finished my tattoo, she presented me to the village. She claimed I was destined to be queen, a crown freshly tattooed on my forehead. Then, she began packing her tent, refusing to tattoo anyone else.

The village was very divided. some thought I was undeserving. Others thought the seer should have tattooed the prince as well. Then, they realized what would have to happen for me to become queen. Suddenly, they were divided for a whole new reason; there were those who thought I would marry the prince, and those who thought I would kill him.
