"So you had my dad killed and me abducted? So you were in on Jace's dad's death too?" I said slowly.
I couldn't begin to believe those words were coming out of my mouth. I couldn't believe that Alice was apart of all these deaths.
I heard Alice hiss. "Were you not listening to anything I just said!? Why would I kill the father of the man I love? That was Zane's doing not mine. I made it very clear that I didn't turn him in because you came along. He was a great help doing all my dirty work for me."
"The deal we made was I screw him and he gets rid of you. I'd thought getting rid of your father would send you and your mom packing to another city, heck another state. That didn't happen though, so now we are on plan b. Once your dead, I'll turn that bastard in and continue on with my life."
I felt bile rise in my throat as I remembered the man who had caught me at school.
"Your screwing a forty year old?" I asked.
I heard Alice scoff. "Technically he's mid thirties, and we didn't really do it, we just fooled around...a lot."
I felt even sicker to my stomach. "I can't believe you have that type of relationship with the man who murdered Jace's father. Do you really think Jace will end up with you once I'm gone? He has never thought of you as more than friends."
I heard the sneer in Alice's voice. "Oh really? You think it won't happen? I was the world's greatest friend. I can make it into being the world's greatest girlfriend. Jace won't ever miss you, I'll make sure of that."
I sighed. "What if he finds out huh? What happens if he won't let my death go just like he wouldn't let his dad's death go?"
Alice gave a short laugh. "I will never let that happen." She said.
I wanted to argue how unrealistic that statement was but I didn't. It was pretty clear there was something fundamentally wrong with Alice. I tensed as I heard someone crash through what sounded like water.
"Nobody seems to have realized she's missing except the guy."
I heard a male voice say. I assumed it's Zane speaking.
"Good, Jace called me earlier but I highly doubt he suspects my involvement in all of this."
I wanted to snort at that statement. Jace was smarter than Alice gave him credit for.
"Gag her will you while I call him. I don't want our Barbie here to give anything away."
I felt a presence behind me and suddenly I'm grabbed and my mouth is being pried open. A gag is shoved in my mouth and tied behind my head. I'm now stuck not only sightless but voiceless. At least I still had my hearing.
I answered the phone as I drove like a madman.
"Hello?" Alice's voice crackled through the receiver.
"What? Alice I can't hear you." I yelled into the phone.
"Jace? Jace can you hear me?" Alice's voice came through clearer.
"Yeah I can hear you now." I said.
"So... did you find anything?" She asked.
I nodded forgetting for a moment that she couldn't see me. "Yeah, I found Annie's pocket mirror and her cell phone."
I didn't mention the dead body at my car. "There was a message on her phone from the killer."
There was a lengthy pause. "What did it say?
Alice's voice was devoid of any emotion as she asked the question.
"It said that if I try to save Annie my uncle and her mom would be his next victims."
There was no response on the other end for a while. "Really? That was it?" Alice finally spoke.
I shook my head again forgetting she couldn't see the gesture.
"No it was lengthier than that, but that's pretty much the gist of it."
Another really long pause filled the air. "Oh. So what are you going to do now?"
Warning bells went off in my head as I remembered there was a possibility I couldn't trust Alice with any new information. So for the first time in my life I lied to my best friend.
"I don't know. The council doesn't want to do anything which means the police won't do anything."
I made sure my voice didn't give anything away. I heard what sounded like a sigh of relief.
"Well, I hope you find something that helps. Look, I gotta go call me if you find out anything else."
The line disconnected and I was left reeling. I was becoming more and more convinced that Alice had something to do with all of this. She was acting different, cold and calculating. So unlike the warm, sunny, weird girl I knew. I didn't want to face the fact that there was evidence that pointed to Alice being involved.
Yet it was still hard to believe that the girl who had joked around with me and wore birds just months earlier could change this much. I put all those thoughts out of my head as I tried to figure out how to contact the FBI. I sure didn't want to leave Massachusetts in search of answers. I almost swerved off the road as I realized Annie's mom wasn't aware of what was happening. I did a quick U-turn and headed to Annie's house.
Driving well over the speed limit in my haste to get there. When I got to the house I slammed on the brakes jerked the keys out of the ignition and got out of my car almost simultaneously. I ran up the front steps. I pounded on the door. The front door was yanked open and Annie's mom stared at me with wide eyes.
"Jace, what on earth?" She asked.
I didn't waste any time. "Annie's been kidnapped."
I cursed as Mrs. Black paled and started to sway. I thought she was going down, but her spine straightened and a look of determination appeared on her face.
"What were you planning on doing Mr. Montgomery?" She asked.
I didn't have time to question the weird way she asked. My pulse sped up as I realized I had someone on my side. Maybe I could finally do something about the situation.
"I was going to contact the FBI and pray they send someone down. I found a dead body at my car when I went looking for Annie. This makes it a serial case."
Annie's mom nodded going almost white in complexion but still stood strong in the doorway. I almost sank to the ground in relief. I would inform her of my suspicions about Alice later. Right now we needed the FBI in Salem ASAP!
