The reconnaissance unit in which Shinsuke and Aya belonged was deep in the forests of the Wide Island mountains. It was relatively peaceful from the beginning of the quest. They were just scouting for potential threats in advance for Hayama's "Log Panel" retrieval unit when they were suddenly ambushed.
