Chereads / Never Gonna Let You Go / Chapter 24 - The Surprise

Chapter 24 - The Surprise

The air in the Marino estate was thick with unease. Illuminada Marino sat at the edge of her chair, fingers nervously twined around a delicate teacup, her thoughts elsewhere. In a few weeks, her daughter Katrina was set to marry Leonard—an arrangement that had seemed logical at first but now felt deeply unsettling. The weight of tradition, family ties, and financial interests had made this marriage almost inevitable, yet it gnawed at her.

She sighed, placing the cup down gently on the table, her gaze drifting out the window to the garden. The manicured lawn seemed a poor contrast to the turmoil brewing within her. "Am I doing the right thing?" she whispered to herself, her brow furrowed in concern. Tarcisio's death had sent shockwaves through the family, and now, with Katrina marrying Leonard, something didn't feel right. Leonard was polite and came from a good family, but there was a darkness that flickered beneath his charming exterior.

Illuminada had spent sleepless nights questioning the match. Could this truly be what Tarcisio would have wanted? The question haunted her, and no matter how much she tried to silence it, the answer was elusive.

At that moment, the door creaked open, and Katrina entered the room, her face flushed with frustration. She moved with sharp, deliberate steps, her presence filling the room with tension. Katrina's usually poised demeanor was absent, replaced by a fierce determination that Illuminada hadn't seen in a long time.

"Mother," Katrina began, her voice tight and laced with anger. "We need to talk."

Illuminada's heart sank, knowing where this conversation was headed. "Katrina, we've talked about this before."

Katrina walked briskly to the window, gazing outside as if searching for an escape from the impending marriage. "No, Mother, you've talked. I've listened. But now it's my turn," she said, spinning on her heel to face Illuminada, her eyes flashing. "I don't want to marry Leonard. I never have."

Illuminada opened her mouth to respond but was cut off as Katrina's voice rose in frustration. "I can't believe you're still pushing this! After everything that's happened, after everything I've said. How can you be so blind?"

Illuminada's hands trembled slightly as she gripped the arms of her chair. "Katrina, this marriage is—"

"For the family, for business, for our name. I know!" Katrina's voice dripped with sarcasm. "But what about me? What about what I want?"

"Katrina," Illuminada began gently, rising to her feet, "this isn't just about you. It's about all of us, about securing our future. Leonard is...stable. He's a good match."

"Good match?" Katrina scoffed, her anger bubbling over. "He's manipulative, controlling. You don't see it, but I do. He's dangerous, Mother. And worse, I blame him for Father's death."

The room fell silent, the weight of Katrina's accusation hanging heavy in the air. Illuminada's eyes widened, and she shook her head slowly. "No, Katrina...you can't mean that."

Katrina's voice broke as she continued, her frustration turning to pain. "I do. Ever since Leonard came into our lives, everything's changed. He's toxic, and he played a part in the mess that led to Father's death. I can't marry him, Mother. I won't."

Illuminada was speechless. She hadn't seen this depth of feeling in her daughter before. The guilt, the anger—it was all laid bare now. She had known Katrina wasn't fond of Leonard, but this...this was different.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?" Illuminada whispered, her voice soft, almost pleading.

"Because you wouldn't listen," Katrina replied, her voice tinged with sadness. "You've been so caught up in what's best for the family, you haven't cared about what's best for me."

Illuminada's heart clenched. She had believed she was doing what was right, securing the Marino name after Tarcisio's sudden death. But now, looking at her daughter—her pain, her anger—it became clear she had been blind to her feelings.

"Katrina, I...I didn't realize how deeply you felt about this," Illuminada said quietly, her hands twisting in front of her. "I thought..."

"You thought I'd just go along with it, didn't you?" Katrina finished for her, her voice softening slightly. "But I can't. I won't."

There was a long pause, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Illuminada felt her defenses crumbling. She had always prided herself on being a strong matriarch, doing what needed to be done for the family. But in her pursuit of strength, she had forgotten to see the person standing in front of her.

"Katrina, I...I don't know what to say," Illuminada admitted, her voice trembling.

Katrina moved closer to her mother, her anger giving way to a deep weariness. "Just listen to me, Mother. That's all I've wanted."

Illuminada reached out, placing her hand on Katrina's arm. "I'm listening now, Katrina. I'm listening."

Katrina's shoulders sagged, the weight of her battle finally easing. "I can't marry Leonard. Not after everything. I need you to understand that."

Illuminada nodded slowly, her heart heavy but resolute. "I do. We'll find another way."

Katrina blinked, surprised. "You...you mean that?"

"Yes," Illuminada said, her voice firmer now. "You don't have to marry Leonard. We'll figure something else out."

For the first time in weeks, Katrina allowed herself a small smile, though it was tinged with exhaustion. "Thank you."

----

The sun was just beginning to set over the sprawling Marino estate, casting long shadows across the courtyard. Inside, the air was thick with tension. After the conversation between Katrina and Illuminada, a calm had settled over the family, but it was short-lived. In the dining room, Karl Marino sat with a stern expression, his hands clasped on the table. Across from him sat his sisters, Riria and Akiko, their faces determined.

"Karl, we need to talk," Riria said, her voice firm yet laced with a seriousness that immediately captured his attention.

Karl glanced up from the papers spread out in front of him, his brow furrowed. "What is it, Riria?"

Akiko leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she locked onto her brother's gaze. "We want to join the battle. The situation in the north is escalating, and we can't sit idly by while others fight."

Karl blinked in surprise, not expecting his sisters to bring up such a request. "You want to join the battle?" His voice was steady, but there was a hint of disbelief.

Riria nodded, her resolve unwavering. "Yes. We've trained for years, Karl. This is our family, our home, and we have just as much at stake as you do. The north is crumbling under the pressure of the invaders, and you'll need every hand you can get."

Akiko crossed her arms, adding with a sharp tone, "We're not asking for permission, Karl. We're telling you. We're Marinos too."

Karl sat back in his chair, rubbing his temples in thought. His sisters had always been strong, resilient women—qualities they inherited from their mother, Illuminada. But battle was different. War wasn't just about bravery; it was brutal, unforgiving. He had been through it enough to know that once you stepped onto the battlefield, you weren't the same person when you returned.

He looked between Riria and Akiko, seeing the determination in their eyes. They wouldn't back down from this.

"Have you thought about the consequences?" Karl asked, his voice softening but still holding authority. "Once you're in it, there's no turning back. War isn't...glamorous. It's—"

"We know what it is, Karl," Riria interrupted, her voice resolute. "We're not children anymore. We've trained for this. We want to fight for the family, for our people."

Akiko nodded in agreement, her hands resting on the table, knuckles white from the intensity of her grip. "You're not the only one willing to sacrifice for the Marinos."

Karl exhaled deeply, glancing down at the floor for a moment before meeting their eyes again. He could see that their minds were made up. They had been preparing for this moment for years, and denying them their place in the battle would only sow resentment.

"Alright," Karl finally said, his voice heavy. "You'll fight with us. But know this—there's no room for hesitation out there. You'll need to be ready for anything."

Riria and Akiko exchanged glances, a sense of triumph washing over them. They had won his approval, but more than that, they had earned his respect.

"We'll be ready," Riria assured him, her tone firm.

Karl nodded and pushed his chair back, standing to his full height. "We leave in three days for the north. Prepare yourselves."

As his sisters rose to leave, the door to the room opened, and Riko entered, her face soft but slightly pale. Karl immediately noticed the change in her demeanor and felt a rush of concern. He crossed the room to meet her, placing a hand on her arm.

"Riko? Is everything alright?" he asked, his voice filled with quiet worry.

Riko smiled faintly, her hand instinctively resting on her abdomen. Her dark eyes shimmered with a mix of emotions as she looked up at Karl. "There's something I need to tell you."

Karl's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"

Riko gently took his hand and placed it on her stomach, a warmth spreading between them. "I'm pregnant, Karl. We're having another child."

For a moment, Karl was speechless, his mind racing. The weight of everything—the battle, the family, the impending war—seemed to momentarily lift as he absorbed the news. Another child. Another life in the midst of so much uncertainty.

His heart swelled with emotion, and he wrapped his arms around Riko, pulling her into a tight embrace. "Another child…" he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You've given me everything, Riko."

Riko smiled into his chest, her fingers tracing gentle patterns along his back. "I just wanted you to know before everything else gets too...crazy," she said softly. "I know you're going to the north soon, but I want you to come back to us. To our children."

Karl pulled back slightly, gazing into her eyes. "I'll always come back to you. No matter what."

Riko's expression softened, but there was a trace of worry that she couldn't quite shake. "You promise?"

"I promise," Karl said, his voice steady and sure.

As they stood there, holding each other tightly, the weight of the upcoming battle still loomed, but for a moment, they found solace in the life they were building together. No matter what challenges lay ahead, they knew they had each other.

----

The night was warm, the sound of the distant ocean waves gently crashing against the shore filtering through the open windows of Karl and Riko's bedroom. The dim lighting cast soft shadows across the room, but none could hide the contentment that flickered between the two as they lay side by side. The events of the past weeks had been exhausting—war, family conflicts, the constant threat looming over their lives—but here, in this quiet moment, it all faded away.

Karl turned onto his side, his eyes tracing the delicate curve of Riko's face as she slept peacefully. She had given him so much: children, love, a sense of stability when everything else felt like chaos. His mind wandered to the countless nights they had spent apart, the fear that something would happen to her or their children during the tumultuous times. But here she was, beside him, strong and resilient.

In the stillness of the room, he softly hummed a melody, one that had been echoing in his head since Riko had shared her news. It was a song that spoke to the very essence of what he felt for her, a song he couldn't shake—the timeless "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Sergio Mendes.

Riko stirred slightly, her eyes fluttering open as she felt Karl's hand softly brush her cheek. A slow smile spread across her lips, and she reached up, cupping his hand with her own.

"Karl," she whispered, her voice still drowsy from sleep. "You're awake?"

Karl smiled softly, his thumb caressing her cheek. "I couldn't sleep," he murmured. "I was just thinking."

"Thinking about what?" Riko asked, her eyes searching his, sensing the emotion behind his words.

Karl hesitated for a moment, then let out a deep sigh, his voice heavy with sincerity. "About you. About us. Everything we've been through, everything you've given me...and how much I love you."

Riko's eyes softened as she propped herself up slightly, resting her head on her hand. She reached out and placed her free hand over Karl's chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her palm. "I love you too, Karl. You've always protected us, given us everything."

A smile tugged at the corners of Karl's mouth as he gazed into her eyes. "I've been thinking about that song—the one we used to listen to when we were younger. 'Never Gonna Let You Go.' Do you remember?"

Riko's smile grew as she nodded. "How could I forget? You used to hum it all the time."

Karl chuckled softly, the memory bringing warmth to his chest. He reached for her hand and intertwined their fingers. "It's true, you know? Every word of that song... I'm never gonna let you go, Riko. Not now, not ever."

Riko's eyes glistened with emotion as she leaned closer, pressing her forehead against his. "I know, Karl. And I'll never let you go either."

For a moment, they lay there in silence, the words of the song playing in both their minds. Karl gently pulled Riko into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as if she might slip away. He pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, and she nestled against him, closing her eyes and feeling the security of his embrace.

"I don't know what I'd do without you," Karl whispered, his voice filled with a quiet intensity. "Through everything, you've always been my anchor."

Riko's voice was soft as she replied, her fingers tracing small patterns on his chest. "We've been through so much, Karl. But we've always found our way back to each other."

Karl's heart swelled at her words. He pulled back slightly to look at her, his hands cradling her face. "I promise you, Riko. I'll protect you, our children, everything we've built. I'll always come back to you."

Riko leaned into his touch, her eyes shimmering with love and trust. "I believe you, Karl. I always have."

The moment hung between them, heavy with the weight of their shared history and the promise of the future. Karl pressed his lips to hers, the kiss slow and tender, filled with the depth of his love for her. When they pulled apart, they both smiled softly, their foreheads resting together as they caught their breath.

As the night deepened, Karl reached over to the small radio on the nightstand, turning it on and searching for the familiar tune. After a few moments, the soft strains of "Never Gonna Let You Go" filled the room, the melody weaving through the air like a gentle reminder of their bond.

Riko chuckled lightly, her hand resting over her heart as the song played. "You really do love this song, don't you?"

Karl grinned, pulling her close again. "It's our song. Every time I hear it, I'm reminded of why I fell in love with you."

Riko's smile widened, and she leaned in to kiss him once more. "You're such a romantic, Karl."

"Only for you," he murmured against her lips, his voice full of affection.

They stayed like that for a long while, wrapped in each other's arms, the song playing softly in the background. The world outside could wait. For now, in this moment, there was only the two of them—together, as they always would be.

As the final notes of the song drifted away, Karl tightened his hold on Riko, his voice a soft whisper in the darkness. "Never gonna let you go, Riko. Never."

Riko smiled against his chest, her heart full of love and peace. "I know, Karl. I know."
