Noah's eyes darted between all of us and his hands curled around, what looked like, a wooden club he kept by his desk. "Why?" He let out a soft laugh. "You and your family were monsters."
I clenched my teeth and could see Zierra also tense by me, but this was Phoenix's battle, not ours. In the doorway Phoenix was unphased at Noah's insult. They looked almost sad as they stared him down. "My family worked for honest crowns, and did everything they could to help this town prosper. The town speakers looked to my parents for advice. They were respected and loved. And all of that went away the instant it was discovered we weren't humans."
"You lot deceived us!" He snapped, his hand gripping the club tighter though he made no movement to swing it. "Goddess only knows who you disguised yourselves as! You could have stolen right from peoples houses and businesses by disguising yourself as the owner. Or altered city documents disguising yourself as the town speakers."
