Chase woke up to the entire crew lying around in his room. Ruby was in the closet somehow, Emily was lying next to his left, Mia was leaning against the door, and Halee was lying halfway out of the window.
"The hell are you doing in my room?" Chase exclaimed, "Don't you have a place to stay?"
"We sold our houses to afford this adventure. Simple."
"What is this damn adventure!" Chase yelled.
"Oh simple." Emily stated, "We're going to Hawaii."
"Then WHY the powers?" Chase yelled.
"I dunno," Emily said. Chase took a deep breath and then went downstairs to make breakfast and coffee. He started a pot and then cracked eggs and bacon on the grill to cook. He sighed. What was he thinking, agreeing to go on this Hawaii adventure? He watched the bacon sizzle, its near raw meat tempting him with the smell. Right then, it hit him like that- what would his friends think? He had a D&D group planned out. They were on vacation in Hawaii too, they were coming back after two days. He held the black pan and he checked the clock on the oven. It was 6:55 in the morning, and he yawned just by reading that. He whirled his head around to see the girls sitting on the couch in the living room- Ruby was on her phone playing a game of some sort- Halee was sketching in her sketchbook- and Emily was watching television- Mia was… well, doing whatever she was doing. Her head was hanging upside down off the front of the couch with her hair touching the ground.
"Um, Mia, what are you… doing?" He asked, looking at her with his hand still on the handle of the skillet.
"Man, even I don't know. I searched your entire room and I still couldn't find anything interest-"
"YOU SEARCHED MY ROOM!?" Chase shouted, startling Halee and Emily. How dare they?! They had just met him, after all. Not a good deal with first impressions, Mia. He thought out of pure anger.
"Uh, yeah, sorry 'bout that…"
Chase sighed and turned back to his breakfast, "It's fine, but, you know, you can tell me if you're bored. There are some cards in a drawer if you wanna play solitaire-"
Mia immediately started searching the drawers for the deck of cards. She accidentally slammed one of the drawers and shouted 'Sorry!' afterward. When she finally found the cards, she started setting them up in an odd way.
"Whatcha doin'?" asked Ruby, pausing her game.
"Oh, I'm playing 'Tri-Peaks Solitaire'!"
"What-a-what solitaire?" said Ruby, setting her phone down and getting off the couch to join Mia on the ground.
"It's one of the types of solitaire! Here, I'll show you. See, you set them up row-by-row in a triangle fashion. There should be ten cards in each triangle, so you should use thirty cards in all, the last row should be face up. Then, put the rest of the deck down and now that is the draw pile. You then draw one card," she explained as she set it up. She drew a three-of-spades, "See, now I can grab… this!!" she took a four-of-hearts and set it on the three. "See, you can only grab cards that are one more or less than the card that is in the discard pile!"
"Like, this?" Asked Ruby, grabbing a three-of-clubs and placing it on the four.
"Exactly!" said Mia, sitting up and clapping her hands. She leaned back over and placed a two-of-hearts then an ace-of-spades, "Now, see, there's an Ace, I can place a King on top of that," She then placed a king-of-clubs on top of the Ace, "Now since there are no more cards on the triangles, we draw from the deck 'till we can place something!" they kept going until Mia stopped the round, "See, we have no more moves, so now we grab the remaining cards and the discard pile, add them back to the deck, shuffle, and play again!!"
"Sweet," said Ruby.
"Let's not get sidetracked from the thing that we've been waiting to do for months, Hawaii!" Said Emily, turning around to face them.
"Well, imma go to the store, you guys want anything?" Chase stated.
"I want a bottle of Vodka," Ruby stated, "I need it to keep warm."
"Ok." Chase says He pauses, "Be back in a while".
"Please don't leave me like my dad did when I was four," Halee said.
"Oh shut up," Chase said.
Chase closed the door and started walking to the nearby convenience store. He took a minute to think, How did it get to this so quickly? He's rushing into a vacation with four girls that he barely knows. He honestly couldn't believe that he's been playing the hero for so long, although he had no idea what powers he had or any idea how to use them. The only one he knows how to use is luck dilation. During his spacing out he had crossed the street into the parking lot a truck came at full speed in his direction. It came closer and it hit him, he was run over after he was hit dead on. His vision faded as he rose out of his body, he saw everyone he loved from up above.
As he rose he heard the voice of an angel, "Now I will make you a choice, you were blessed by a holy goddess so you may go back to earth, or transcend to heaven."
Chase took a deep breath and said, "First, I'm going back down but… Before I do, Emily is a goddess?"
"Yes, she is and as a matter of fact, she is the goddess of good luck." She sighed, "Did you forget?"
"Wait, what do you mean?"
"Hmm, well, I won't give away much but let's just say that you two were very close friends."
"That's pretty amazing."
Chase paused but quickly sucked in his breath as a flash of scenes when through his mind. First, there were too many to count, but then they subtly started depleting until there were only five. They repeated in an order that seemed like these two kids were growing up. The youngest image was of a little boy and a little girl playing in a field of golden grass. The next was of the two children watching as a beam of bright yellow light disintegrated two adult forms that had horns and tails. The third was of these two kids, both looked about seven or eight, falling from the clouds, the little girl hitting a ledge on a mountain while the boy kept falling until he hit the lake below. The next was of the little girl hugging the soaking wet boy, one of her hands on the back of his head, a shamrock green glow could be seen coming from where her hand touched. The last one was of the little boy wandering up to a house while the little girl hid from his line of sight.
"Ow, ugh... " mumbled, opening his eyes.
"Now are you ready to go back, or do you have more questions?" she asked
Chase felt himself wake up and materialize right in front of the convenience store and walked inside. He grabbed some booze and a couple of candy bars and then went to the register.
"How's your day been?" The cashier inquired.
"There was some crazy shit that happened today."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah."
Chase grabbed the bag and then started walking home, making sure not to accidentally die again. As he got home he noticed that his entire house was neat and tidy and there his suitcase was packed by the door. He set the groceries on the counter and walked on into his room to find his room clean except for his bed, closet, and window, having the same scene as this morning.
"Good afternoon," Emily sprang up and said.
"Did ya get my Vodka?" Ruby asked.
"Yeah yeah, It's on the kitchen counter," Chase spoke.
"We packed your bags so you should be ready to go tomorrow for the big day," Halee mentioned.
"Sounds good," Chase spoke quietly while walking downstairs just now noticed how many hours passed and that it was already eight o'clock. He quickly whipped up five things of cup ramen and then walked back up to his room to chat with the rest of them.
