Chapter 1 - Ain’t no mountain high enough

The cold air of midwinter Quebec blew across the boy's face. His breath forming into mist. He pulled his hoodie closer, the chill sending shivers down his spine.

"Maybe you should close the window. You'll catch a cold, you know?" Said the Indian taxi driver. "What business do you even have here in the middle of nowhere? You visiting your relatives or something?" He continued in a thick accent one could only assume was from somewhere down south.

" Something like that." The boy replied.

They neared a compound, fenced off with what looked to be electric wiring and littered with Do Not Enter signs. It made out to be an old bunker of sorts.

" Stop it right there. Near the fenced door. Yeah, thanks." He said getting out of the car.

"Say, could you wait here for me. I won't be long."

" Wait! You aren't going in there are you?" The driver asked, " That looks like a bunker and probably government property. Look beta, just come back. It's best not to go in there.."

" Don't worry! I know what I'm doing. Just stay in the car and wait for me."

Putting on his headphones, the boy replied with a self assured smile.

He was gone before the driver could voice any further protests. Past the fence and into the compound. As the music began playing, he trotted up to the door and knocked.

"Listen baby, ain't no mountain high , ain't no valley low ..."

[30 minutes earlier]

"Is this bunker safe enough? You never know what might happen. After all, we are dealing with a folk who consort with forces of a mystical persuasion." Asked a middle aged man, shifting his gaze nervously across the facility.

A burly man in a well tailored suit responded with a chuckle beside him, " Senator, I didn't peg you as one of the superstitious sort. Don't worry we are the best PMC this side of Toronto. We spared no expense in your security detail. Everything is accounted for and as we speak my boys are setting up landmines and anti air ballistics around the compound. There is no way anyone could ever breach our security."

"That is certainly reassuring Monsieur Blanc. I must once again thank you for hosting me here."

" Say no more, Senator Brown. We are like family. No one can lay a hand on you while I am here."

[ Present time ]

" Sir, we have lost contact with the group 4. Should we send a squad out to check on them?" Buzzed a voice through the comms system.

"Well .... fuck."
