Abdicating meant huge changes to the monarchy, something the entire family knew.
By default, if he did such, the royal next in line for the throne would inherit it.
And of course, after James, came his sister, Carina.
It was more than obvious that Carina was unwilling to take the throne for herself. Heck, she hated that idea more than she did her arranged - and technically forced - marriage.
She was never meant to rule, so she was led to believe, since James was first in line because of an Amarisian law created decades ago.
It was unchangeable, and Carina appreciated having all the perks of being a royal without having the heavy burden of leading the kingdom one day - the burden that was left to her younger brother, James.
But, the current James was different. Different than before, that is.
