Chapter 148 - Let The Mission... Commence!!!

"We should take this route to get to the castle. It's the quickest." Rem pointed to the path.

The map consists of mainly underground places. That means they're going to have to move in the sewage.

'I don't want anyone to get sick from being in the sewage for too long. We better act fast.'

"Do you have a cloth?" Rem asked.

"Yes, I do," Kaito answered, pulling out a black and white bandana with unique patterns on it.

"Why did you ask?" He questioned, not knowing why Rem asked him that.

"There are toxins in the sewage. Do you want to get poisoned? Breathing in a lot of those can kill you." Rem claimed.

She wasn't sure of how she knew these things.

She knew that she went to school, but she wasn't sure of the specific things that she learned.

"I don't think the toxins are that bad though," Kaito argued.

"It's better to be safe than sorry. Anyways, we have no time to waste. Tie that behind your head. You can use that as a mask to protect you from all the toxins." Rem stated as she walked down the stairs from the attic to the second floor.

Kaito followed Rem from behind after putting on the bandana to cover his mouth and nose.

(A/N: This reminds me of Covid!!! For safety purposes, wearing a mask will help both you and everyone else around you! I realized that after wearing a mask every time I go outside, I don't get sick anymore. I hadn't gotten sick ever since last year before quarantine began. I hope I don't jinx myself...)

They both tried to make as little noise as possible.

'I must avoid bumping into any dangers. Fighting will only cause me to use more of my mana. I can't afford to use my mana recklessly.' Rem looked around, paying attention to her surroundings extra carefully.

Rem and Kaito both left the empty house. They're now near the buildings in the quiet streets. Rem has to use her senses instead of using detection that would cost mana.

She would use her sight to see far and to see in the dark without any problems. Her hearing would be used to hear everything around Rem. If someone is walking or flying towards them, Rem should be able to hear it clearly due to her abnormal yet great senses. Her other senses are useful as well, but sight and hearing are the senses Rem uses the most.

'The sewage entrance is right there, in the middle of the street straight ahead.' Rem noticed.

However, she could see demons surrounding the sewage entrance too.

'There are... 4 demons around the sewage. I don't know if there are more. There could be demons hiding.' Rem thought about it for a few quick seconds before stopping and hiding behind a building in the streets.

Rem raised her right hand, hand gesturing for Kaito to stop where he was.

"There are demons at that sewage entrance. We can either wait for them to leave or go to another sewage entrance." Rem told Kaito the two choices they have.

Rem's decisions and actions will affect how the plan will turn out. It'll either turn out great, which is when Arka city is taken back or it'll turn out horrible, which is when they get caught. They might even die from doing this, but both Rem and Kaito knew the consequences. Rem knew that failure wasn't an option.

Suddenly, the demons surrounding the sewage entrance began to separate, each leaving towards a different direction to the city.

Rem waited a few minutes before finally speaking.

"This is our chance. Let's get in, quick." Rem whispered, walking towards the sewage entrance while hiding every few meters in the building's shadows.

Rem felt like criminal acting like this. Well, she is a criminal.

'Even with the mask on, I can still smell the stickiness.' Rem's brows furrowed the moment she opened and moved the circular sewage lid from the entrance.

The two then climbed down the ladder. It was dark, but Rem has no trouble seeing things. Before Kaito could say anything about the darkness, Rem grabbed Kaito's hand and guided him towards the direction of the castle.

The sound of water dripping from above and the sewage water constantly flowing nonstop made the atmosphere eerie.

"You said that people are living here?" Rem asked, wanting to confirm what she heard earlier.

"Yes, but I don't know where they are. We're working together, and we each have a role. They have their things to do. For me, I'm the person in charge of putting together all the information and drawing maps by using the information given to me." Kaito said aloud.

"Once we arrive at the castle, we'll go save your mother. With her help, we can take back Arka City together. However, it's not possible without the help of more people. There are demons everywhere. I cannot defeat all of them. We can either forcibly make them leave, which has a low chance of succeeding, or we can find a way to make them leave without fighting much. We can't possibly win against hundreds of demons. Especially with my condition right now." Rem stated.

"How can we make the demons leave without fighting all of them?" Kaito questioned, unsure of what they would do.

'It's quite simple. Demons are strong, but most of them aren't that intelligent...!'

"You'll see. For now, you don't have to do anything. Trust me on this one. I'll take care of that part." Rem said in a determined tone.

"Well... I don't know if we can get Arka City back, but I want to at least save as many people as I can possibly save. The person I want to save the most is, of course, my mother." Kaito said desperately.

'He's just like a lost, hopeless child, but at least he has the determination to do something.'

...

Rem and Kaito arrived at the East side of the castle safely. They were still underground and thankfully, they weren't discovered just yet. They planned to find Kaito's mother then help her escape. The moment they're spotted, they would get captured, questioned, tortured, and killed off ruthlessly by the demons because that's how most demons are. Their ruthlessness is in their nature.

"Don't make any noise and follow me," Rem ordered, activating her stealth.

She gave Kaito her stealth as well, so none of them would be detected by anyone.

'Let the mission commence.' Rem thought with an extra serious face on.
