Chapter 2 - Ride to Safety

Kelsey had been at her Championship Soccer Finals game with her team, The Coyotes, when everything started. She'd had the ball in her sights ready for a steal, when someone off the field screamed. Kelsey had nearly screamed herself, in frustration, but she looked over to see where the sound came from.

She had stared in shock, at her friend Bethany's mom being attacked. The women was being scratched and snapped at by some oddly dressed homeless person. The guy clawed and his jaw made a loud popping noise as he'd nipped at her. Bethany's Mom screamed at the man, as her husband tried to break the other man's grip.

Another person shouted. More homeless people were limping towards them. Kelsey realized something as she peered around at the people. They didn't look exactly homeless, rather they looked like victims of an animal attack, torn up and dirty. They were all dripping with fresh blood. Some with yellow and slimy pus. One guy was dragging a very badly broken leg his bone exposed. Beyond freaked out and horrified, Kelsey looked over to were her mom was supposed to be. She was growing frantic when she finally spotted her.

She screamed and pointed. "Mom behind you!"

A man yanked her Mother backwards into his arms, as she clutched Kelseys baby brother closely. The guy had opened his grisly mouth, and bit her on the side of her face, ripping away and CHEWING on her cheek! Kelsey ran to her mom, using as much strength as she could muster, she shoved the guy away.

He fell down then distracted, grabbed at another screaming persons ankle and started biting making dog-like sounds. It ripped through the persons leg ligaments and muscle. Her mom shoved her brother into her arms, as she clutched at her face crying.

With tears running down her face the women shoved her daughter away. "Run!" Her Mom screamed.

Kelsey reached out to her worried, but her hand was smacked away. The teen clutched her brother closer as her mother went silent.

"Mom! Mom? Mommy are you okay?"

Her Mothers body shook. Her head whipped back, like she'd been slapped in the forehead by a brick. She let out a hair raising sound that was inhuman. Her eyes rolled back in her head. She looked like a rock climber who'd fallen, back bowed, as an imaginary rope snapped strong keeping her from falling. Her chest heaved forward her arms slack at her side. Her crying had stopped.

Kelsey's Mom's head snapped back down, her eyes where changed. They were blood shot and yellowing. Saliva oozed out her missing cheek, her tongue darting out sickeningly, licking her lips. Her hand dashed out to grab for Kelsey. The whole scene seemed to have happened over hours and seconds at the same time.

"Mom?" She yelled. The women lunged at her. "No! Stop!"

Kelsey felt her eyes water as she hurriedly stepped back. More screams erupted until they filled the air. She made a decision. With her mom advancing at her in a strange jerky way, She turned around and ran. She pushed forward legs pumping hard.

"Get to the van, then help Mom." she reasoned with herself.

She tripped over someone who'd fallen, but quickly righted herself. She glanced at her brother to make sure he was okay. She looked back at what she'd tripped over. The body was chewed up, every possible organ gone and the head was missing. It was all just torso. Kelsey had a premonition and could almost feel her Mom catching up behind her. She got up running demanding her feet to move faster.

She'd seen girls from her team. Girls she'd grown up with. Friend's and enemies alike running and wrestling with each other and the blood covered people.

Bethany, one of her best friends, had been trapped underneath three people, who where EATING her intestines. Her red hair flared out around her, a chunk missing from her skull. Her brown eyes wide full of fear and pain, as they'd swam around in her sockets.

Two of the attackers, were her own parent's. Mr. Harris had been missing both his right hand and a chunk of his left foot. Kelsey couldn't make out his face. Mrs. Harris was on her knees, Kelsey saw her face, and the lack of human within it. She wasn't missing a limb but the hair on her head had been pulled back, ripped from the rest of her skull. It was like a half-assed attempt at scalping. It hung limply behind her.

The other person, now unrecognizable, had a clawed up face and no nose. He was bald guy with a giant puss bubble, ready to pop on the side of his head. Bethany's eyes suddenly focused and locked on her. Her hand had reached out for her shakily. Kelsey kept running, fighting back the tears that suddenly sprang up in her eyes.

As she was running, she spotted a small blonde and blue eyed three year old who was crying. Kelsey reacted, stopping to try and pick the toddler up. She reached out for the girl plastering a fake smile on her face. To her horror the little girls Mother, a women she recognized as her teammate Sara's Mom, snatched the little girl up. She bit down on her neck hard. The child screamed in pain. Kelsey felt her lunch rise up at the back of her throat as she looked away. She didn't pick any particular direction; her instincts were screaming fight or flight. She chose flight.

Kelsey darted out into the street, intent on outrunning the world if she had to. She heard a screech. A giant truck came to a stop nearly hitting her. She looked up into the windshield, terrified, and saw a brunette women wave to her. Taking a chance, she let her feet lead her and almost bumped into simeone.

The man seemed normal at first, until his mouth fell open. The lady in the truck opened the door, hitting and knocking him down hard. She hopped out, grabbed Kelsey up by the arm, and shoved her forward into the truck. She followed closely behind and once inside they sped off. After going over the"bump" she shoved her feelings to the farthest corner in the back of her mind. Kelsey was afraid to look around outside, but she felt the need to, like she had to. So she did looking out into faces, the faces of nightmares.
