A dozen or so buildings, composed of a red clay-like substance, were scattered around the dwelling. Their roofs looked to have been made from dead plants, like almost everything else on Polum, and of course, this meant that the interiors remained nice and cool. As I gazed around further, I noticed magic lanterns strategically hung along a tightened rope that appeared to span the entire settlement.
The lighting wasn't perfect, but the bright blue painted 'sky' seemed to capture every little ray that happened to shine upon its surface. And there were two children outside using what little light they had left, with one sitting at the foot of a mud-daub house. At first, she didn't even glance up as we walked by; her eyes were only paying attention to the wood-carved doll in her hand. 'Mommy, look, there's a bird that's bigger than me!'
I couldn't resist a chuckle then pretended to peck at the air while shuffling around in circles.
