The rushing water had the distinct aroma of algae scraped from sun-baked rocks and raked up dirt, but the taste was far from fresh. The water had smashed through buildings made from metal, stone, and the people inside them before we'd landed, so now we experienced the full palette of added grime and waste.
I shook Cali's shoulder until she began to stir. 'Are you alright?'
Her eyes were tiny slits, blinking whenever water splashed upon their lids. Her hair was untied, floating as the new lake rose above the table. I needed to get Cali out before it was too late.
'I thought I was swimming. What's going on?'
'See for yourself,' I lifted my hand to wave around. 'We're sinking to the bottom of the new Brockwing Lake.'
Cali started paddling towards the carriage exit, but the door was tangled in river weeds. Already, the river born lifeforms were beginning to make this place their home, and no amount of human intervention would stand in their way.
