My hearing was faltering now; Cali's voice was steadily growing distant, as was the cannon fire striking Dauntless' hull. Everything suddenly seemed far away, as though I was drifting out of my dead husk of a body. But the second I felt myself getting too far away, I was abruptly snapped back and found myself once more gazing into Cali's blazing eyes.
'What?! You died, only for a second or two, but I swear, you were gone.'
'I can confirm it; I still have the ship monitoring your degeneration, Jake. I don't think we need it anymore, though.'
'Keep it on him,' Cali ordered. 'I realise you're my Guide, but you should be dead right now. You'd aged decades in what? A couple of minutes? Your organs had been failing one at a time, and yet here you are again, no worse for wear.'
'How do you feel?' Rac demanded.
'Fine, I think.'
'Good, then if you wouldn't mind, could you go outside and check on the airship.'
