I yawned as I opened my eyes and looked around the burrow that me and my mother lived in. It was kind of small and cramped but it was warmer than being outside. I looked at my mother and couldn't help but admire her shiny silver coat with white on her belly. She was truly a beautiful wolf. As she noticed me looking at her she picked her head up and looked back at me.
I had just opened my eyes two days ago and since then I have grown more and more curious by the day. I looked at my own coat and couldn't help but admire the glossy pitch black color without a speck of any other color. I couldn't help but wonder what color my eyes were. My mother's eyes were a stormy gray that matched her coat.
"Do you want to go outside?" She said while looking at the entrance of the den. "I'll take that as a yes," she said smiling at me wagging my tail. She stood up and started to walk towards the entrance of the den. "Are you coming?" She said as she paused right before walking outside. I bounced onto my feet and waddled to the entrance.
As I peaked outside I noticed something I had never seen before. There were little flakes of white falling from the sky onto the already coated ground. "What is that?" I asked my mother. "It's snow. It won't hurt you." She said walking through the small amount that had collected on the ground.
I stepped into the snow and immediately pulled my paw back. "It's cold!" I whined as I stared at my mother. "You'll be fine," she reassured me as she walked back over to encourage me. "You can do this. It's not like your paws are going to freeze off," she said with an amused look on her face.
I walked out into the snow shivering. My mother laughed at me as she started to kick snow in my direction. I fell over as a large clump hit me in the face and I could hear her laughing at me. I jumped up and started to kick snow in her direction but I wasn't able to kick it hard enough to hit her. We laughed as we continued to playing in the snow until suddenly my mother froze.
"Yes!" I shouted as I finally managed to hit her with some snow. "Finral, get back in the den," she said in a low growl. I stood there unsure of what was happening. Suddenly I caught a whiff of a scent I hadn't encountered before. I looked around trying to figure out where it came from. "Get back in the den!" My mother snapped at me. That's when I saw it. A large creature that look like a mountain was walking in our direction. As I looked at it I noticed that something was wrong with it.
It was stumbling and looked confused and disorientated. Suddenly my mother picked my up in her mouth and through back inside the den. As I tumbled down through the entrance I could hear her dash off. I backed up against the back wall of the den as I heard the creature with it thundering footsteps running in my direction.
The creature came to a stop at the entrance of the den and I could hear it sniffing at the ground. I held my breath as it suddenly reached one of it bulky arms into the den and I got a look at it. It was more than three times the size of my mother and had long razor sharp claws that could probably take out smaller trees in a single swipe. Its jaws looked they could easily crush skulls.
I closed my eyes and waited for something to happen. After about a minute it pulled its arm out and thundered off in the same direction as my mother. I let out the air I had been holding in and couldn't help but worry about what would happen if it got my mother.
I tried to stay awake but after waiting a while I drifted off to sleep.

I woke to my mother shuffling into the den. She was soaked and shivering and collapsed onto the floor exhausted. "Did it hurt you?" I asked as I looked at her. "No, I managed to lead him away," she said as her eyes started to close. "What was that thing?" I asked her as I crawled over to her. "That was a bear. If you ever meet one don't hesitate, just run. Run as fast as you can. If it gets you you're done. Now promise me that you'll never try to face one," she whispered. "I promise," I whispered back as we both drifted off to sleep.
