Chapter 3 - Undead

Two days after his master disappeared into the lake, Redd finally learned the most basic form of swimming.

It was quite dangerous at first. Due to his nervousness at the thought of drowning, he would often lose his form and struggle vigorously by instinct as he fell deeper and deeper into the water.

But strangely every time he was about to lose his consciousness and completely drown, he would feel his lungs being supplied with air even though his nose was completely blocked off with water.

Baffled and excited at the new discovery, Redd thought he maybe able to breathe underwater just like those fishes.

But after some safe experimentation, he found that he was unable breathe underwater when he was not drowning. Only when was drowning would air directly enter his lungs.

Though disappointed that he could not breathe like those fishes, Redd soon overcame his nervousness as learning how to swim turned out to be quite harmless.

The ten year old kid finally saw a ray of light that could lead him towards his master.

Soon a week passed.

"Sigh! I can swim now, but my stamina is too low. I can't even swim one tenth of a Mu without being exhausted." Redd sighed.

It's been a week since his master had disappeared into the lake, and Redd was starting to feel worried about his master.

Sigh!

With a thought, Redd summoned the Title Directory in his mind. It's been a week, and new Titles should have appeared in the Directory by now.

'The previous week's Titles weren't erased, and were recorded!' Redd liked this feature of the Directory. Now, even if he forgot some information about the past Titles, he could always look it up!

'Hmm! This week's Titles seem unique?!" Redd frowned. The Title [ Undead ] especially put a weird expression on his small face.

'Ghosts exist in this world?!' Redd was shocked. He never thought the ghosts he had heard from stories were real, but the Title [ Undead ] just confirmed this.

Suddenly, Redd felt a rush of excitement rising in him. He felt that he had learned something that most others did not know!

Unfortunately, he couldn't even meet the most basic requirement (Race: Undead) to this Title and thus had to swallow his excitement towards it.

After staring at the Title for a few minutes, he reluctantly moved his concentration to the other Titles.

Out of the other four, Redd liked [ Novice Axe User ], was indifferent towards [ Novice Sword Swinger ], most curious about [ Merchant ] and most baffled at [ Beggar ].

[ Novice Axe User ] is quite suitable for woodcutters like him. His [ Woodcutter ] Title meets the requirement of occupational Title dealing with axes, so all he needed to do was to learn an Axe skill and practice with it for an year. Soon, the Title would be in his hands!

Though it might take 3 years for him to learn a single skill and one more year to meet the other condition, Redd felt it was quite good and worth the effort as this Title was also one of conditions that he needed for [ Best Woodcutter Of The Barn Village] Title.

::::

[ Best Woodcutter Of The Barn Village (Ranked) ]

Conditions To Be Met:

[ A resident of the Barn Village ] (1/1)

[ Have the Title [ Novice Woodcutter ] ] (1/1)

[ Have the Title [ Novice Axe User ] ] (0/1)

[ Learn three Woodcutting Skills ] (1/3)

[ Cut 50 different types of fully grown trees (or) hundred different types of wood ] (0/50) (0/100)

::::

'I'll have to ask uncle Jahd to teach me an axe skill. He is the only one who uses an axe without being a woodcutter. I'm sure he knows some axe skills.'

Though most use an axe as a medium to perform woodcutting skills; these skills weren't actually classified as axe skills! There were some differences between woodcutting skills and axe skills!

After seeing the requirement of an axe skill for the Title [ Novice Axe User ], Redd instantly made a few guesses.

The Title [ Novice Sword Swinger ] held no interest from Redd. He was a Woodcutter, so why would he want to take up the sword. Moreover, no one in the village knew a sword skill. Even if Redd wanted to be a Sword user, it was impossible in the near future.

Redd ignored the Title [ Beggar ]. Though he was once a slave, someone who was below beggars, he had never faced hardships in the Chaski household as the Chaskis took good care of their servants.

He was also taught by the Chaski household to treat people with different statuses differently when they were training him up as a servant. Due to this, Redd inwardly saw beggars as someone low and someone who must be kept away.

As for the Title [ Merchant ], it caught Redd's interest for a while.

First, it was a (Ranked) Title on the same level as the Title [ Best Woodcutter Of The Barn Village ] that Redd desperately wanted.

But this Title also seemed to be the 'occupational Title that deals with money' that was mentioned in the conditions of the Title [ Haggler ].

::::

[ Haggler (common) ]

Conditions To Be Met:

[ Have at least one Occupational Title that deals with money. ] ( 0/1)

[ Reduce the initial price by half, 50 times through haggling. ] (0/50)

[ Never pay higher than the initial price. ] (0/0)

::::

But more than these two, the last condition of this Title intrigued Redd more.

[ Earn 5 Status Value as a merchant ] (0/5)

Wasn't Status Value gained through Titles? Could he gain Status Value even without Titles?!

Redd was confused, but he also felt that he had discovered a huge secret.

But no matter how huge the secret was, it was useless to the current Redd who was learning how to swim. Redd discarded his thoughts about the Titles and soon concentrated on the lake before him.

He needed stamina to cross the lake and to increase stamina he would have to increase his Endurance attribute.

But without enough Status Value it was impossible to increase any of his attributes. Thus Redd had to resort to the most basic form of increasing his stamina; training!
