Temari knocked on Shikamaru's door.
"Come in"
As she entered she saw him sitting in front of a box with a checkered pattern on the top, little wooden tiles marked with symbols were scattered over the surface. His stare was focused intensely on the different pieces and he would move them every once and awhile. He was strategizing by playing shoji with himself.
Temari stood at the door for a while before walking over and sitting down across from him. She studied the board and moved one of the pieces, Shikamaru looked up at her, then examined her move. He had a curious expression on his face as he wordlessly picked up the 'knight' and relocated it in a position where her 'king' was in check. She quickly took out his 'knight' using her 'queen' without paying attention to where his other pieces were. He then eliminated her 'queen' and proceeded to win the game.
"I let you win. Couldn't have you crying on me, crybaby." Temari huffed.
"Troublesome woman."
. . .
Temari was climbing the stairs that lead to the hokage's office. Kakashi had summoned her saying there was a message for her, most likely from her brother Gaara the kazekage. She entered his office without knocking, he was expecting her, so he should be ready.
"Ah, Temari. Here's your message." Kakashi took a scroll from the brown bird sitting on his windowsill.
"Thank you, Hokage-sama"
Kakashi sweat dropped "Please drop the 'hokage' part, just called me Kakashi"
Temari ignored him and opened the scroll.
Dear Temari,
Things have been very busy here in Suna. I need you to come back early, you will be leaving tomorrow morning as early as possible. You can prepare your report when you get back.
Sincerely
Your brother
Gaara
"I have to leave tomorrow morning."
"Hmm, ok I will have my report done by tonight"
"Thank you hokage-sama"
"I told you, it's Kakashi!"
As Temari left the tower she bumped into Shikamaru and they ended up walking together. It was quite late in the evening and the sun was already setting so they grabbed a quick meal at Ichiraku Ramen.
"Let's get some dessert, I want to have some dangos before I leave."
"Huh, Aren't you leaving in two days?"
"Nope, change of plan. Gaara needs me back sooner so I'm going home tomorrow morning"
"Ok. Let's get some dangos then."
Temari smiled as they walked to the dango shop. She didn't like to admit it but she had a serious sweet tooth and loved dangos.
Shikamaru bought them each a bag of the sugary treats, Temari thanked him and they continued their stroll.
They chatted while they walked and before they knew it, it was almost midnight and they were sitting on top of the great stone faces.
Temari looked up at the night sky, it was covered in stars and the moon was full and huge shining down on them.
"You know, I've always loved stars. They're alway twinkling up there in the big night sky. It's so peaceful, kind of like you and clouds."
Her voice sounded so gentle, if Shikamaru hadn't been right next to her he would never have known it was her.
Temari suddenly looked surprised, as if she hadn't meant to say that and she didn't know why she did.
"I've never told anyone that before..."
"During the Chūnin exams when we fought, I didn't give up because I was lazy or because you're a girl. I did it because I liked you and didn't want to hurt you."
"Wha-what?"
"You told me something you haven't told anyone so I did the same."
"O-oh. Anyways we should head back now, it's late."
"Right, let's go."
. . .
Shikamaru opened the door and let Temari in, she walked in and stood in the living room waiting for him to come in. He walked up to her looking at the ceiling awkwardly.
"Shikamaru.."
His gaze snapped down to hers.
"You said you liked me when we were younger..."
She bit her lip in embarrassment.
"Do you, do you still like me like that?"
To say he was caught off guard was an understatement. Shikamaru almost choked, his eyes widened with surprise. He took a deep breath.
"I do."
Temari felt her heart pounding in her chest as she looked him in the eye
"I-I like you too..."
Shikamaru lifted her chin up and leaned in, he felt her warm lips brush his and a spark went down his spine.
Temari closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around his neck pulling them closer together. The kiss quickened and she felt his tongue press against her bottom lip requesting to enter. She opened her mouth slightly allowing her tongue through. He put his hands on her waist as their tongues danced together, it was a slow passionate kiss that showed meaning, their first kiss.
The two separated, breathing in air almost panting. Temari looked down at the ground and let go of him, she was embarrassed. First she had told him something nobody else knew, then she asked him if he still likes her and then they kissed. She looked up shyly and saw his eyes were full of care, she calmed down and smiled slightly.
"Good night Shikamaru. I'll see you around."
"Good night Temari, Sleep well."
They both went to bed and fell asleep remembering the moment they spent together that night. Their first kiss.
