Chapter 1 - 180 Days Left

Levi's Pov

Have you ever felt like you're aimlessly floating through life just waiting for something to give you direction? Well, the only thing giving me direction right now is my routine of counting down the days until I graduate. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom and sister, but I can't wait to get out of this dreaded state. Ohio isn't exactly an accepting place. High school is a living hell for anyone different. I just try to blend in and lay low. It doesn't help that people found out that I'm transgender last year. Some people don't care at all, but the majority tease me. I just try to ignore them. There's no point in arguing. The only thing that matters is that my mom accepts me. In fact, I've been on testosterone for a year and a half now. I started the second that I turned sixteen. The only reason people know I'm transgender is because someone overheard a teacher talking about me. Before then nobody suspected anything was off about me. I was just an average teenager. Welp, what's done is done. Guess I better get ready for my first day in that hellhole before my little sister shows up to jump on me. Despite only being a year younger than me, she still

acts like a rambunctious, little girl

I stumbled out of bed a few seconds before my alarm went off, and I went to get dressed. My closet is filled with black graphic t-shirts, basketball shorts, hoodies, and jeans. I grabbed my skin colored binder from a hanger and put it on in record time. I quickly pulled on a slightly oversized black hoodie and a pair of black shorts. I walked to my mirror and checked myself out. I had broader shoulders, so my body was almost v shaped. I brushed my short, curly hair out of my face and stared at my dark blue eyes. I tried to smile at the mirror and saw a flash of my dimples before I gave up and let my face drop.

I mosyed out of my door and into the kitchen. My mom was already sitting there talking to my sister. My sister is the spitting image of my mother with her green eyes and dark brown hair. She also has a unique smile that can brighten up the darkest corner of the world.

I, unfortunately, look exactly like my deadbeat dad. I have his dimples and olive skin. I imagine it hurts my mom to have a reminder of him hanging around, but she doesn't let it show. It still hurts her that he left even though it's been years. My dad was the love of her life, but she wasn't his. I haven't seen him since I started going by Levi, so I honestly don't even know what he would've done. I probably dodged a bullet.

"Hey! Are you just going to stand there like a creep? You need to drive us to school soon, bro," Riley yelled.

I finally snapped out of my daze and shouted back, "I'm coming. Chill out, sis. We still have ten minutes till school starts."

"I swear sometimes it seems like she eats Redbull by the gallon for breakfast," I mumble to my mom before giving her a hug and running after Riley. No more procrastinating. I need to do this. I got into my mom's old Volkswagen that looked a hundred years old and unlocked it for my sister. She practically hopped off the gravel in our driveway and into the car.

"Ready, my dearest brother?" Marley spoke in her classy witch accent.

Mimicking her, I said while pointing a curled finger,"Why yes, dear sister. Let us go to the village dungeon for our eight hour sentence."

We both bursted out laughing while I started the car. It gave a few pitiful puffs before starting. We spent the rest of the ride listening to some AC/DC as loud as we could with the windows down the whole way. As we pulled into the school parking lot, Riley whispered encouragingly, "It will all be fine, Levi, and if it isn't, tell me, and I'll beat up some fools!"

"You are weirdly the best sister ever," I faintly chuckled out.

"You know it, bro," she confidently spoke while playfully elbowing me.

After that we both got out of the car and went our separate ways. She split off to go to her group of friends while waving at me, and I sped away to find my classroom.

While frantically looking for the room number to my homeroom, someone collided into me, and I fell down like a pile of bricks. I went to pick up the books on the floor and hand them back. When I looked up to see who bumped into me, I saw the most beautiful girl that I had ever seen in real life. I could feel myself turning red. I mean, don't get me wrong, I am moderately handsome, but she looked like - for lack of better words - an angel.

She had gorgeous, fair blonde hair and powder blue eyes. She had pail skin with a hint of a tan and a sad expression on her face that she tried to hide with a smile. I held the books out for her to take, and she hesitantly reached her hand out and took them. For a brief second, our hands touched, and I felt a jolt of electricity. Although it was a fleeting moment, it felt like time paused as we made eye contact. I heard her say a quick sorry before she zoomed away. I was so dazed by what just happened that it took me a few seconds to realise that she ran away.

I swore under my breathe because I didn't take the chance to ask her what her name was. I look over at the clock and jump because first period started a minute ago. I start to jog down the near empty hallway while thinking of the angel. When I got to my English classroom, I opened the door and apprehensively walked in.

"Nice for you to finally join us Mr. Song," The teacher passive aggressively commented.

I sighed and said, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Geer. It won't happen again."

The teacher responded, "I'll let it slide this time, Mr. Song."

"You mean Ms. Song," an idiot, named Brett, muttered as I walked by. I just decided to ignore it. Brett is nothing but a walking stereotype, the dumb jock.

I basically tiptoed to the back of the classroom and had to choose one of the last two desks left. Luckily for me, they were near the window. As I sat down, I started to wonder about the mysterious angel that I met a couple of minutes ago. After a few minutes of day dreaming, I heard another late student being berated by Mrs. Geer. When I finally looked up at the commotion, I saw the graceful angel yet again. Everyone else had broken out into conversation about the new girl while I started with my mouth agape. As soon as the teacher was done talking to her, the blue-eyed angel glided down the isles of desks. She found a seat at the only other avaliable desk, which happened to be beside me. When she saw me, a wave of realisation splashed over her features. After gathering herself, she smiled and held her hand out for me to shake. The angel finally spoke and said, "Nice to meet you. I'm Mary. I'm sorry for running before. I was kind of overwhelmed." While talking, she nervously tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.

Her angelic voice and demeanor left me stunned, so after recovering, I stuttered out,

"It's okay. I mean...It was a pleasure. That sounded weird. Just forget you heard that," I held out my hand nervously and tried to seem cooler, "Um Hi. My name's Levi."

She took my hand and smiled before she said, "You're cute when you're flustered. Do you want to sit with me at lunch? I don't have many friends here."

My increasingly reddening face caused her to giggle, and I responded,

"Sure. That would be nice."

Then, with a wink, she whispered, "It's a plan." Then, she turned to the front of the classroom with a hint of a smile lingering on her face.

Her offer only dove me deeper into thought. At that moment, I only knew two things for sure. This will be an interesting year, and she might give me a heart attack.

From that moment on, I counted down the seconds until lunch. This is going to be a long, tortuous day of waiting.
