Chapter 37 - Nine Nirvana Staff 2

Kou Jun sat atop a small boulder of rock, overgazing the entirety of the realm. He suddenly felt a chill down his spine. It was not because of the thick fog consuming him, nor the chilly breeze from the north. But he felt a sense of dread, a bad premonition that which jolted him awake from meditation. He looked up ahead. The boundless expanse of mist wasn't able to veil his vision as he could still espy everything thousand miles away. Beyond the jumbled groups and secluded mountains, the clouds above them roared. Quick flash of lightnings and sudden thunders scared every creatures away. Everyone looked at the sky in wonder. But the clouds dissipated revealing a huge shadow overwhelming the sunlight. The shadow enlarges quickly, now burning with blue flame as it hurled downward much slower. But accompanied by the meteor was a pressure suppressing everyone to the ground.

Kou Jun gazed north. And there it was again. A huge meteor was falling from the sky and although the restrictions have slowed it down, it would still be a catastrophe if any of those touched the ground. There will be a massive earthquake. Considering how huge and powerful they are, it is possible they can destroy the entire plain.

Kou Jun glanced south. Another two were descending. He turned to the sky in worry. What is happening? Where do all these boulders came from. Whatever it is, Kou Jun could never be so sure. But he is certain that something from the higher echelon is destroyed and their debris are falling down. If he must do something, that is to try prevent the catastrophe.

He stood up and chanted a mantra whilst drawing characters on the air. Bright light enveloped him and when he was revealed, a handsome middle-aged man with absolutely long hair was revealed. White metallic armor coated him, and unto his left hand, he holdeth a long staff. The staff overflows with mysterious runic glyphs such that looking at it can induce heart-attack.

Within the fog and the pressurized wind, he vanished in a flash, leaving a powerful shockwave echoing across the valley.

While somewhere deep beneath the Rapture Mountains, all the beasts and monsters howling, whether in madness or agony, or excitement whatever it is. Their boss was yonder the face of the void, with only his creepy smile and voice transmitted aloud.

"SIX YEARS. THE DESTRUCTION OF HEAVENS IS SOONER THAN I THOUGHT. HURHUR. NOW, EVEN THE SIXTH DIMENSION IS NOT HOLDING UP."

He cried out loud, filling everyone's knees with jelly. And the beasts quavered, bowing down to the abomination.

Meanwhile, Rou Lang and Xiao Bai were in a perilous situation. The entirety of the boulder was revealing its fullness. It is burning in the atmosphere in both orange and blue flame. However, it's gravitational force interferes massively such that tree were uprooted and so were air burned quickly. Meteorites would occasionaly be separated from it and travel as shooting star. Each shooting star, however the size is as powerful as grenades. The big boulder was restricted thus it's speed is decreasing and decreasing as it draws nearer. This gave Xiao Bai enough time to complete his array techniques in one go.

"Domain of light!", he exclaimed. By releasing his light qi in a form of array, he used his presence to shape them into a barrier, encompassing both him and the helpless Rou Lang on the ground. The lady now feels lighter, not that suppressed anymore. She examined the white barrier exuding much aroma. The barrier seems very thin it could crack a moment. Nevertheless, the thickness of something does not determine its durability.

Almost inconsistent to the eye, there was actually sets of runes running around the barrier, in and out. Normally, runes were only applicable to artifacts, she didn't know it can be used in barriers. Underneath, the ground was also covered with a plate of array. Characters and figures were imprinted yet they were words she cannot understand.

At last, the runes and array were activated simultaneously, creating a powerful suction force that begans devouring darkness all around. A tornado seemingly formed without the barrier, evident on how effective light energy was. Through the runes, those energy outside were transformed to the blinding form of light. Rou Lang closed her eyes tightly, only hearing the sound of machine shutting down.

Then everything went silent.

As she opened her eyes, her heart thumps faster and faster until her adrenaline reached insane levels that every movement was slower. She gazed up above. Xiao Bai shot upward. Despite her heightened senses, she was not able to catch a glimpse of his robes before he vanished, leaving a trail of white energy ascending like a shooting star falling in reverse.

Then there was a loud boom. The most powerful eruption she'd ever heard, echoed across the world that it created a shockwave. Ultrasound energy reverbrated, creating a tuning sound as if million thunders were raining everywhere. Accompanied by the ear-shaking sound is a light so bright it devours all shadows around.

The boulder was not able to handle the sheer force and weight of light smashed upon it that it broke apart into hundred pieces. It's core exploded of immense pressure that it released dazzling purple shade of light. Both white and purple light tried to devour each other. They were two giant elements that their clashing straightaway invoked chaos among the atmosphere. Like two hungry beasts tearing meat, the two elements tore off the air, splitting its molecules and crushing its atoms. As a result, the depth of void was revealed underneath. Comparing to light, the void was way more chaotic space in which everything that gets on its way was sucked to nothingness. Not even light can escape.

The higher heavens sensed this chaos. One which was not to be an existence in a normal plain such as here. First of all, splitting the void is against the Heaven's law, as just a small void can enlarge to a powerful black hole. Only the Immortals of cultivation peak can tame the void to be used as portal. Unleashing super heavy techniques such as Xiao Bai's Light Domain is also disallowed. Doing so is punishable, even if he is an ancient inheritor. Thus, to combat such powerful forces, the higher Heavens have to use extreme measures. Not only Tribulations, but they have other means of causing retribution to law-offenders.

A slow beam of light carefully descended from above. The light enveloped Xiao Bai. Rou Lang would not be able to espy what happens next, but the explosion and chaos suddenly vanished. Then the extreme radiance subsided, revealing the wreck left behind. Xiao Bai was frozen inside a bubble of light and he fell down helplessly. Following him were pieces of meteors showering like rain. The huge boulder was smashed to pieces. However, that doesn't mean it was entirely deciminated. It left behind huge parcels still heavy enough to cause earthquakes. And under those rocks, she was no mere an ant, waiting to be crushed. In truth, she could get out of the hit zone if she make a run for it. But her feet are frozen on the spot. She stared at beautiful rains of light on the sky, and the unconscious Xiao Bai on the ground with grievious wounds. His magnificence dulled.

She gritted her teeth. Instincts kicked in. She was a human, a living creature. The way of compassion and pity felt for other beings is not vanishing. Conscience will forever be etched on her heart. So even if it costs her life, she knew what to do. That is to save other's life.

For her whole life, Rou Lang has not experienced any sort of achievement. She was a good-for-nothing trash. Until now, even with the presence of her two masters, she was still zero success. She did not even reached the minimal requirement of a cultivator and even after countless modifications on her body, she still remains as the a mere mortal without any special ability. She failed to even grasp the basics of martial art, did not figure out what dao to take. All these reflects her uselessness to the society. Extreme worry and shame washed her cute face as she thought hard what her Master Levi and Lei Jian are feeling right now.

"I am nothing but a weak woman, an incompetent person who only takes advantage whilst not giving anything. I have everything in me -a tempered soul, good constitution, resources, and two grandmasters ready to be my mentor. Nonetheless, I am still nothing. I haven't achieved anything. I have disappointed my masters. I have failed them. And now, I can do no more but to watch as somebody else died trying to protect me. What kind of person am I? Can't I even not become a burden?" Her eyes red in wallow and tears outpoured her emotions. She looked at the face of Xiao Bai sleeping peacefully. Blood is seeping out his lips. If she could exchange her life for another chance, she was willing just to see those lips smile again. She sighed.

What does it takes to become a hero.
