In the year 3034 a thousand years since the rare disease is known as specimen X plagued the human race, the last survivor awakens from her coma-like sleep in her stasis pod. Suffering from specimen X her body was placed in a comatose state until the day would come when she would be cured. 1,000 years later and that cure still needs to be found.
I can hear the frantic voices of people calling out to one another, then I feel the air release and a hissing sound fills my ears. Bright lights attack my eyes forcing them to closed back again. My mind is foggy, I feel so off-balanced 'Where am I?' My thoughts begin to invade my mind. I reach out and my hands' touch emptiness, slowly I inch my eyes open trying to keep the brightness of lights from conquering my very sight. I need to see where I am, my surroundings.
"The girl she's awakened" a man's voice calls out worriedly. Immediately I feel two sets of hands-on my arms. It doesn't feel threatening but, the touch alone sends me into a panic. Even though my senses haven't rejoined me, I will myself free of their grasps and run out to the only opening I see.
Multiple footsteps stomp behind me, their pace quickens as I make mine as well. Who are these people? What the hell do they want from me? I turn to look behind me only to run into something very steady and hard. Not a wall or a door, but a very tall muscular woman. With shoulder-length brunette hair, green eyes, and a look that is emotionless. "Shit" I curse aloud as my body meets the hard concrete floor under me. I breathe heavily trying to catch my breath as I look up at the woman that now towers over me. "Are you quite done?" She asks with an annoyed tone to her words.
Left speechless I simply nod, there's no way I would be able to get to my feet to make a break for it again. The strangers who were chasing after me catch up as well. Breathing as heavily as I was. They look at the woman and back down at me. There's three of them, an older man with a white beard, glasses and bald head and a long white lab coat on, the other two are women who look very identical as if they were twins, their eyes catch my eye as we stare at one another. They both have deep crimson-colored eyes. Long hair slightly blonde with a hint of brown, both of them have it pulled back into a tight bun. However, show different emotions on their faces while the one I had made very much unwanted contact with is still showing none.
As I still lay there on the floor not daring to move again, my three pursuers look at this muscular woman and sigh. "Thank you for stopping her," the elderly man tells the woman.
She looks back down at me then back to him again. " I see she's finally awakened, isn't it too soon for her to be out running the halls?" She replies with a stern voice.
"Not like it was by choice the pod malfunctioned and she bolted before we could do anything." One of the twins' counters.
" Excuses won't get you anywhere, get her back to the infirmary before Neese finds out about this" she quickly spits out. And then her very discerning eyes are back to me. By this point, I'm confused about where I am and now I am just intrigued by this tall woman standing over me. "And you," she says stretching her hand out for me to grab.
Not wanting to add on to her aggravation further I grasp her hand in mine and she gets me to my feet without even a second thought. "Go with them without any trouble, you understand?" My face probably says a big 'fuck you' because before I even respond she finishes with " if we were going to kill you we would've done it years ago"
My heart skips a beat and I just manage a nod as I turn around to face the three people, causing no more trouble than I already have I willingly and probably very foolishly go with them.
The hall walls are a cotton white color, there are many doors that have no signs, not even labels of what lurks behind them. The only thing I notice is that they have no handles and no windows. But they all have tiny keypads next to them. Doors of the future? How long have I been in that pod? , yet again my thoughts flood my mind with the many questions that I now realize I want answers too.
They bring me to another plain door, the man types in a code, and the door slides open swiftly, just like an elevator door would. By the looks of the room I assume its the infirmary that the strange woman had ordered them to take me to. There's a bed, and many different types of machines with technology so advanced I can't even recognize what it does. " please lay on the bed and remain still. We will run some scans to do an analysis on your body" his hand waves across his body, and I do as he asks.
The bed is quite soft and comfortable. As if I am laying on a fluffy cloud high in the sky.
"May I ask a question?" The words just slip out without my mind even giving it a second thought. This time one of the twins walks over to me.
"And what would that be?" She says gently looking me in the eyes. She doesn't seem threatening however, I avert my gaze somewhere else as I speak. " what are your names?" The woman smiles and looks over to her identical twin and then back and then to the man, then onto me.
"I am Natasha, this is Roland and over there is my twin sister Nicole. " she points to her sister who waves at me in return. I nod to them all with a nervous smile on my face. I'm almost positive that they can either sense my nervousness or it is written all over my face. Just then I begin to feel light-headed and my heart begins to race.
Roland and Natasha are quick to start hooking me up to the strange machines which now I can guess take my vitals, "she's going to crash" Roland's voice is now in a very frantic tone. And my eyes begin to go blurry everything in the room is now just one big smear picture. What goes next is my hearing.
Their voices fade out and I am left with nothing but silence, just me and my own thoughts in my crazy kind. In a vat of nothingness. Is this what it feels like to die? Am I dieing? My mind begins to ponder.
As I feel my body relax and my muscles ease, everything in me goes limp and my energy fades quickly.
The world has escaped me or I have escaped it. Either way, I have mixed emotions on if I should be scared or relieved that I am leaving that place full of strangers.
Unsure how long I had been out, I awaken to Natasha's voice calling out to me, I stir and groan, my eyes not wanting to open. It's everything I have to force them to allow me the pleasure to see something other than darkness.
"What happened?" I ask half-heartedly. They breathe a sigh of relief, focusing on the monitors I can see the lines for my heartbeat is steady now and I don't feel dizzy.
" It seems as though you still have the disease that plagued your species thousand years ago, and through all the chaos, your body couldn't handle it and dropped your blood pressure causing you to seize and go into a deep sleep." I gasp at his words and my eyes go wide.
"What do you mean a thousand years?!, It's only 2020," I shout out. They don't say anything and for a brief moment, silence creeps into the room. I sit up and look around. "This cannot be" I feel my lip quiver and fight back shocked tears.
Nicole steps over to the bed and wraps me in a hug. Pulling away after a moment she looks at me " I'm sorry Emily but, it's not 2020 any longer you are now in the year 3034. I'm afraid there is so much you need to know." She wipes a single tear from my eye that had trickled it's way down my soft red cheek.
I suck in as much air as I can trying to calm myself before I go into a panic attack. Gripping the blankets I shake my head and avert my eyes back down. My walls come up and I want nothing more than to shut everyone out and go back to the darkness.
