Chereads / THE MASKED KNIGHT / Chapter 2 - /ONE/

Chapter 2 - /ONE/

LILLA KILTS

Her opponent fell to the ground as her sword fell out of her hands in defeat. Lilla kept the tip of her sword pointed at her opponent's throat waiting for the count of her win as silence stretched through the auditorium.

"Winner swordwoman #14!!!"

The auditorium bursted out in applause when the winner was announced. Lilla rose her sword to the air and stood strong despite the various cuts she had on her. She smiled in victory and turned to her opponent, swordwoman #3, with an outstretched palm all for the sake of a good match. Swordwoman #3 brushed her hand away with a snarl adorning her lips and pushed herself off the ground grumbling profanities as she walked away towards the exit.

Lilla stared blankly after her as she stumped her way out of the auditorium like a child. One of the rules of the auditorium was to never use your name when scheduling a battle. You wouldn't want some vengeful swordman coming after you after a match well lost. That in truth provided little to no protection since they might still see each other's faces.

Lilla walked into the back of the auditorium and into the direction of the changing room, with her wooden sword weighing heavily on her hip.

Sword's play wasn't legal since there are possible chances of death. The possibilities aren't exactly high per say, but they are the highest out of all sports. As a result the pay swordsmen gain are higher than any other. One could earn millions in a day and possibly billions, if you play your cards right.

Lilla had just begun removing the full body paddings when her phone rang, flashing the name of her best friend. Lilla smiled and answered the call.

"Hey cara"

"Lilla!!! How was the match, did you show them who's boss." Cara asked in a high pitched voice.

Lilla moved the phone away from her ear and eyed the phone warily.

"Cara we don't scream over the phone remember." Lilla continued wearing her clothes and rapped an overused scarf around her neck to protect herself from the early chill.

A small silence stretched through the phone line.

"Cara?"

"Are we still meeting at Sally's cafe?"

"Definitely"

"Alright, see you soon."

And with that the phone line went dead. Lilla pulled back and looked at the phone in alarm.

Well that was strange...

It was clear that Cara had wanted to say something, but held beck. Cara never held back on her thoughts, sometimes to the point of it almost being insulting. Well, Cara had always been kinda weird.

Lilla shoved her phone into her pocket and exited the auditorium with one destination in mind. She ran at a low speed and avoided bumping into people although she still got the stink eye, but it was better than most times anyway.

Lilla came to a stop and walked slowly trying to catch her breath as she looked towards the old sign.

Sally and cones

Not the most creative sign, but still eye catching.

"Lilla!!!"

Lilla turned towards where her name was being called and smiled when she saw the 5'4 black haired girl jogging towards her. Cara jumped into Lilla's arms and squeezed her tight. Lilla patted her head and let out a wide smile.

"How's my little writer doing?"

Cara squeezed her tighter in response.

"..."

"Bad day hun?" Lilla stopped patting cara and instead hugged her tighter.

Cara nodded but stayed in the embrace.

"Why don't we get some scones and talk about this over hot coco?"

.

.

.

"So that's what happened." Lilla slouched in her seat and sipped her hot coco while listening to Cara's retelling.

Cara nodded laid her head on her palm once her steps stopped flowing.

"If the publishing industry doesn't make up to 50,000$ in two weeks Papa will go mad with debts"

"That's harsh"

"..."

Silence fell on them once again.

"Cara you're being weird"

Cara didn't reply instead she looked outside the shop at the bustling street with a blank expression.

"Lilla do you remember that awful story about the lamb that your mom told to us when we were kids."

Lilla tilted her head.

"Yeah, I remember."

Cara smiled in response but kept looking at the street.

"I think I found a way to clear Papa's debts"

Lilla bolted upright with her eyes wide.

"That's awesome cara!!"

Cara looked away from the street and looked at Lilla with an amused smile.

"Thought it's not the best way..."

Lilla only smiled and unconsciously tilted her head in confusion. Her brown coloured eyes still wide.

Cara looked away.

"Let's take a walk Lilla?"

"Of course"

Lilla packed up her snacks in a brown pack while cara said to meet her outside. Lilla frowned a bit at Cara's behavior during their talk, but brushed it off and jogged outside to catch up with Cara.

The two walked side by side, both basking in the comfortable silence of the night as they walked into the the old and deserted park.

"I'll be doing some stuff starting next week."

Lilla turned towards her friend and stopped walking.

"It's not the best way but if I can help Papa I want to do it." Cara clenched her hands and her voice cracked.

"What should I do Lilla?"

"Cara..."

Cara turned her head away.

Lilla stayed silent for a while.

"... The memories... Are still too painful for me to bear." Lilla said and kept on looking forward.

Cara bit her lip harder and bowed her head in sadness.

"But if I had a way to reverse things, no matter how horrible the method, I think I would."

Lilla sighed.

"I know mum's been gone for 2 years now, but... " Lilla stopped as she choked on her next words.

Little Lilla clapped before her mother could finish the song.

The woman gave an open and tender smile.

"I'm not done yet lil' "

Lilla smiled at her mother.

"You have a pretty voice mummy"

The woman burst out laughing as soon as the sentence escaped her daughter's lips.

"Really?" The woman asked with an amused gleam in her eyes.

Lilla nodded but frowned later on.

"But... Why do you sound so sad?"

The woman's smile dimmed a little.

"This was... The good luck song your father listened to before he went to heaven."

Lilla tilted her head.

"Papa?"

The woman's smile turned sad, before she covered it up with a bright smile again.

"Yes, Papa."

Lilla smiled and began to hum the song.

Unaware of the growing emptiness in the woman's heart.

"If I had taken a way that I wasn't okay with I would spend my days wondering if going through such a narrow path would be worth it."

Regretting

And regretting.

Like she did now.

Lilla had been so ignorant then.

Her mother had suffered from severe depression for ten years before she finally decided to put an end to her life.

Lilla had cried so much at the burial.

Why did you lie mother?

Lilla fell to her knees and sobbed on her mother's cold casket.

You sounded so...

Sincere.

Lilla choked on her next sob.

"I will never let you go..." Her mother whispered.

BUT YOU LEFT!!!

Lilla banged the casket and screamed.

Liar!

Lilla sobbed louder.

LIAR!!!

Lilla came out of her thoughts when Cara began crossing the road with glazed eyes unusually distracted.

Wrong...

Something was wrong.

Cara had a thin thread attached to her head.

Lilla strained her eyes to take a closer look, but the thread seemed to disappear.

What the hell was that?

Honk!!!

Lilla's eyes widened as she raced to pull cara out from the middle of the road.

Lilla turned to the approaching truck. Her eyes widening as tears gathered up in her eyes unconsciously.

"... Lilla!" Cara screamed, but didn't take any action to move.

Lilla opened her mouth.

Wha-

And then

She was hit.

Lilla's vision blacked out for a bit, before a strange ringing started up in her ears.

She laid on the cold streets as multiple strangers gathered around her. Lilla searched each of their faces looking for a shred of familiarity.

Cara?

Lilla continued to look at her best friend's stricken face as she started down at her dying self. Cara trembled as she raced towards Lilla panicking and trying to stop the blood loss by applying pressure and beginning Lilla to not close her eyes.

Lilla coughed up blood and stared hyperventilating.

It hurts...

Lilla looked to the blue sky.

She had always admired the sky.

It was light when it was calm.

And stormy when it was angry.

Dark when it was sad.

Lilla began to grow tired and closed her eyes as she took her last breath and left the world which had finally shown her it's last moments of beauty.

She finally left the world.

Wishing...

Hoping...

For a peaceful and sincere life.

Where she could drown in it's gentle melody.

And watch the sky all day.
