The sound of my phone ringing wakes me. I sleepily look at the caller ID to see it's Christian. I smile and pick.
"Hello?" I sit up
"Hey panda! Happy birthday!!" He screams through the phone that I had to move my phone from my ear a little.
"So you wake me up at....." I shift the phone to look at the time and place it back on the ear. "4:47 am to wish me a happy birthday?" I smile.
"Yeah I wanted to wish you before anyone else does."
"Well-" I drawled. Might as well play a little "Sorry to burst your bubble, but Kelvin from the swimming team already wished me earlier."
"What! You mean Kelvin Parker, the tall thin broom stick dude who has major crush on you and a nerd? That Kelvin Parker?"
"Yeah Christian. That Kelvin Parker." Kelvin didn't call me or anything. I'm not even sure he knows my birthday date.
"What! How dare he? Wait, I think I know Trevor. He could-"
"Christian."
"I'm sure he has something on the guy that I-"
"Christian." He was doing it again. He always talked to himself when he was angry, nervous, sad, frustrated or when he was planning something bad, forgetting everyone and everything around him.
"Maybe if I meet him today at-"
"CHRISTIAN!!!" I had to shout to get his attention.
"Yeah?"
"I'm just kidding
"Really? I was already planning-"
"Just kidding."
"Well because it's your birthday, I'll let it slide. Now that aside, I have a few surprises for you."
"Surprises?"
"Surprises."
"So what are they?" I ask getting excited.
"Now it won't much of a surprise if I tell you,:c would it?
"No but, what about a clue?"
''Nope.''
''But-"
"Nope."
"Why? He couldn't see me but I was pouting.
"Don't worry babe. You'll love it"
"Okay....." I drawled.
"So..." He started and we spoke until it was time for me for get up for school.
"See you in school girlie." He said before he hung up. I smile at my phone. A knock came on my door
'It's open!" I say to the person and turns out it is my dad as he pokes his head through the door.
"Hey kiddo." He says through a smile.
"Hey dad."
"Happy birthday!" He says and walks into my room with his hands behind his back.
"Thanks." I say as I get up.
"So how does it feel to be eighteen?" He asks and I pause wondering.
"Honestly, I feel the same. Nothing special or anything." I say shrugging.
"That's exactly how I felt." He paused. "So I got you a little something." He brought out his hands and held a little brown furry teddy. It was so cute I had to smile.
"Aww. Thanks dad. I love it." I collect it from him. It felt soft. Really soft.
"That's not all. On behalf of your mom and I, here." He held out a small red ribboned box. I felt nervous and I wondered why.
I slowly untie the ribbon and open the box to see a key. Which kind of key you ask.
A
Freaking
Car
Key!!!!!
I look up to my dad abruptly in utter shock and before I could say anything, he speaks up.
"Before you say anything, I know after your sister's death, you never went near a car again, but I want you to know that you are going to overcome this and when you do, I want you to know that I'm always here for you and I want you to take your first major step with that car key."
"You really think I can overcome this?"
"Kiddo, you are my daughter, you can overcome anything." He says and smile. I rush to hug him.
"Thanks dad."
"Anytime." I pull away and smile at him. "So what kind of car is it." I asks but he just points at my window. I walk to my window to see a bright yellow Porsche 911 carrera T in our driveway.
"That's my car?" I ask in disbelief.
''It sure is."
"Thanks dad." I say again and he just smiles.
"Anytime. Anyway I better leave you to get ready for school."
"No problem. Bye."
"See you later kiddo." He walks out of my room leaving me alone with my thoughts as I walk to the bathroom to get ready for school.
As I look at the mirror, what I see freezes me.
