Later on, the couple decided to live in Constantine's place near a volcano. Upon their transfer, their life was more miserable compared before. There's no rice field there; only corn plants were growing due to the rocky land around the volcano. So, their main meal is milled corn, not rice. The harvested corn was stocked in their house, then they will grind it on a stone grinder, made of two halves of stone where they will keep on turning it so that the corn kernels will be grounded into finer ones.
There, Lorie gave birth to her first son. They struggled there due to being very poor. The drinking water was too far, it took many kilometers just to fetch water, to take a bath or to wash their clothes. And also the market place was too far away from them, there were no public vehicles either as means of transportation, except a single rider motorbike where even 10 people could be carried by it, they called it as "habal-habal".
Then, their son was followed by another son, then another daughter. They have 3 children already: 2 boys and a girl.
But one day, Constantine suddenly got sick, he's totally bedridden. They had no other choice, but to let the eldest son take over his father's place as a breadwinner at his young age of 7. He didn't go to school because of poverty. The eldest son walked many kilometers daily to sell anything like vegetables or any bread for them to buy the family's everyday needs. And he tried to befriend anyone, any strangers along the way just to have some companion along the dangerous roads and to fight the fear he's going through the dangerous roads he's traversing every day. At times, he encountered a haunted house along the way, and based on the tales spoken by everyone there, lived a kind of Witch or "Aswang" (a shape-shifting evil spirits in Filipino folklore, such as vampires, ghouls, witches, viscera suckers, and werebeasts (usually dogs, cats, pigs).), her house was all closed, windows and doors were all shut and no one dared to enter there.
He managed to get over the fear and just continue doing his daily activity.
After selling his goods, he will divide his coins to buy a bar of laundry soap and a small bucket of fish; and sometimes a few bread. That's the everyday life he's experiencing at an early age.
Years passed by, the father was still bedridden but begetting a child went on. Lorie carried another child and gave birth to another baby girl, named Anne, the fourth child.
After a few months, they decided to have a vacation to Lorie's hometown. And unexpected things happened, their baby Anne got sick without knowing the real cause.
The baby cried and cried the whole day until she stopped crying and breathed no more. Lorie was crying, trembling and panicking. They have no money to bring her to the doctor and their only option was to bring the child to a nearby faith healer. Because during the day, according to Lorie's mother, she saw someone under their wooden floor, peeking to them, to where the baby was sleeping. And after that, the baby Anne started crying with no reason. So, they suspected that the man who's peeking under their floor was an "Aswang" (a shape-shifting evil spirits in Filipino folklore, such as vampires, ghouls, witches, viscera suckers, and werebeasts (usually dogs, cats, pigs).)
Thus, Lorie immediately carried the child through her arms but it seemed the baby was so heavy and so difficult to carry. Her father saw her puzzled, so he tried to help her but she refused. The woman was afraid her father might let go and the baby might fall to the ground if she let him carry baby Anne. So she hurriedly searched for a piece of cloth and made a sling securing the baby there then tying both ends around her neck. The baby was so small yet she was puzzled why it's so heavy to carry her as if she's carrying a heavy metal or large rock that she might give way anytime if she'll not try to overcome it.
Then, together with her father, they continued walking along the muddy road towards the faith healer's home, despite the difficulty yet she bore it all, silently just to save her baby, though it was a little far away from their home.
They arrived after a few hours but the baby didn't move anymore. They talked a little upon arriving at the house of the healer, an old woman and immediately, they're requested to put the baby on the floor. The faith healer saw that the baby's lips and face turned dark already. The faith healer kneeled down and prayed silently. She raised her two hands to heaven. Then, after a few minutes, the baby moved miraculously.
The woman and her father laugh tearfully. The baby returned alive, they're so grateful to God through the help of the old woman - the healer and they're so glad about it. It was a miracle for baby Anne to come alive again.
