Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: Back to school

Henry M. Gunn High School was one of the most popular high schools in California. Everyone was pretty much the same, trying to be someone they're not. The seniors were like the Gods of the school when you think about it, especially the Clam Bro's- or so they call themselves.

There's another group, I mean pair, called the Glammers. Let's just say that they are cringe-y with their over-the-top makeup and slutty dressing. It's cliche that there is ALWAYS someone like that in EVERY school. They don't have to dress slutty but they have that attitude that says 'I'm a bitch and I'm gonna be a bitch to you'.

All of this leads to me. I'm a seventeen year old teenager who moved to California last summer after the incident. My house burnt down. And my mom's best friend- which is my best friend Melissa's mom- helped her to buy a house here for a reasonable price. Melissa's family has lived here for almost seventy years.

I wonder how they managed to make it seem like a modern house...

I adjusted to the change of a new school one month ago after I'd joined the cheerleading squad and quit two months after. The short visits in the summer holidays and the weekend visits at Mel's house during the summer was a blast. I learned from Mel that freshman days are the absolute worst for most kids, especially if you're unpopular.

The juniors and seniors were the ones who did the bullying. They dumped freshmen students in the garbage bins like banana peels. But... In a way, they deserve it, the boys to be exact, since they act like total jerks when I tell them I don't date kids.

I'm the kind of girl that does her homework, listen to her mom, get good grades and it might be hard to believe but I am an extremely wild child; at least when I want to be.

I like to go to parties, especially on the weekends with my best friend Melissa Huston, we've been best friends since, well, forever. My mom and her mom are best friends so it's not a surprise that Melissa and I became really close friends. Melissa was there when I had my first kiss and I was there for her when she had her first relationship... Which did not end so well.

We spent summer holidays and Christmas breaks together, with someone who I will not mention because she's a pain in my a- anyway! Life is great for me, well at least most of the time.

"Scooby dooby doo! No more sleep for you!"

"Ugh! Already!" My voice was muffled by the pillow which I had placed over my face in sheer frustration.

As if planned, my mom's loud shout was the next thing I had heard, "Elaina! It's time to get up!"

What did I do to deserve this torment? I'm sure I didn't post a mean pic of super mean girls on Instagram. Or probably this is payback for not giving fluffy her milk last night.

Shit. I hope I wasn't that unfortunate to have been cursed by my cat. Plus it wasn't my fault she didn't write a sticky note for me to remember to give her milk.

Angrily huffing, I flung the duvet off my body and slid out of bed. I lazily stretched my arms and allowed a tiger-like yawn to exit my mouth.

Then one glance at the clock had me sprinting down the hall and into the bathroom. Today is the day that we return from the Christmas break. And I do not want to be late since I have a chemistry homework that I want to complete and give to Mr. Dustbin- I mean Dustburn.

First thing's first, I need to have a shower...

Five minutes later I was securely wrapped in my navy coloured towel, with my toothbrush in my mouth and foam all over my chin. My hair looked like it just barely survived a tsunami and a trip to the forest -where birds inhabited it for a period of time.

"Where's my phone?" I grumbled through a mouthful of foam.

Tightening the towel a little more, I rinsed my mouth and wiped it with the back of my hand. I took quick strides to my room and opened my closet door. Within seconds, my room was turned into something that didn't represent a room.

Hey I said that I was the kind of girl who did her homework and listen to her mom, I didn't mention that I was a neat freak.

I had to rummage my entire closet and my top dresser before I stumbled upon the perfect outfit. The white high waisted jeans complemented the light blue flowy blouse. All I had to do was get dressed and do my hair.

Normally it would take my hair about one and a half hours- or more- to finish. But since I got tired of having long jet black hair that ended mid-back, I cut it. So now it barely brushed my shoulders. All I had to do was blow it out and brush it to perfection. I used hairpin to prevent hair from getting in my face and then started on my makeup.

I don't really like makeup so I applied mascara and a thin layer of red lip gloss before I grabbed my bag and head towards the door. However, just before I exit my room, I turned back around.

Wow... It looks like something blew up in here.

Should I clean it?

Mom's gonna throw a fit if I don't clean it, that's for sure... But if I'm gone before she notices the mess then I'm safe.

I shrugged and hurriedly ran down the stairs.

Grrr.

Oh God, why is it that every time I want to escape breakfast, mom always makes pancakes and bacon.

One bite woun't hurt would it?

Yeah. You are a pig when you eat pancake and bacon so yeah. It would hurt.

Ugh. I so hate my subconscious sometimes!

But is that... Cornmeal porridge?

Ew.

Knowing that I've lost my appetite, I screamed, "bye mom!" And without waiting for her response I ran to my car, unlocked the doors and got in. But as I was about to close the door, mom appeared at the door and shouted, "Tell my baby hi!" I grinned at this.

"Why haven't you eaten? Did you tidy your room?"

I should've known this was coming. Closing the door, I blew mom a kiss and said, "I love you!"

As I was backing out of the driveway I could see mom shaking her head with a bright smile on her face. She's probably tired of me, but she should know that she's gonna have to put up with me for a long time.

*****

I reached Mel's house in seven minutes, and I think I reached just in time.

"Drive! Drive!" Was the only thing Melissa shouted as she jumped in the car, looking at me with wide eyes, like a certified mad woman.

Having no idea why she was behaving like this, I furrowed my brows in confusion and asked, "what? Why?"

"Melissa return my Louise Vuitton heels this instant!"

Turning my head in the direction of the voice, I saw Mel's mom running towards my car with a spatula in hand and an angry scowl on her face.

"Oh..." I mumbled and with that I was speeding down the street shouting, "bye Mrs. Huston!"

Wow, there had been a lot of shouting.

I glanced at Mel, she turned to look at me.

She smiled.

I returned her smile.

By now I had slowed down.

"Elaina!"

"Mel!"

We shouted simultaneously, smiling goofily at each other.

I turned to face the road again before saying, "I missed you."

Sniffling was heard before Mel said, "I know babe. It was torture to be away from you for two whole days."

I wiped away a fake tear, "oh I know, it was such torture."

You might have noticed that Mel and I are quite the goofy pair of friends. Well yeah, we are. When your moms are best friends, you tend to be a weird, freaky or crazy set of best friends; and we are an example of that.

"Oh! Mom said, and I quote 'tell my baby hi'."

Melissa danced around in her chair like a star struck teenage girl and squealed, "that's my momma." You could hear that she was boasting, I rolled my eyes at this.

"So... Are you still going out with this Jacob guy on Saturday?" I questioned, while my eyes remained focus on the road.

"Uh, yeah."

I glanced at her just in time to see her fighting back a smile.

Like for real?

"The guy is an ass-"

"Look! They're giving away free smoothies at Miss B's diner!" Mel exclaimed, rudely interrupting me, jumping in her seat. Surprised, I jumped in my seat. "I am so going there later," she gushed.

"Are you listening?" I snapped, annoyed that she found smoothies more important than what I had to say.

She calmed down once we passed the building and muttered, "oh, right. He is cute and his pecs are lickable..."

I feigned a cough and snickered quietly, "ok, I'm gonna be sick."

"OMG! You like him!"

"What?!" I exclaimed, almost running into a trash can. The car swirved a little bit but I was able to prevent any damage. "That was close," Mel nodded in agreement mumbling, "I know."

I glanced at her, suddenly stern, "I don't even know the guy. And besides, your taste in guys are... Uhm, interesting."

Ignoring my comment, Mel inhaled a mouthful of air and clapped her hands together like an excited seal. "We could do a double date!" I could very well see the light bulb that was hovering over her head from the corner of my eye, blinking in amusement.

"Nope. Not doing any double dates, at least for now. So stop thinking about it."

That last sentence was followed by silence. I think we were about five minutes away from school by now. "I can hook you up with Nick Grayson." Now this peaked my interest- but I won't tell her that. "He is super hot and he's good with girls, especially in bed-"

"Mel! I did not need to know that he is good in bed, and how did you even know that?!" I screeched.

I briefly looked her way and it didn't surprise me that she was rolling her eyes. "Well.. maybe I heard Katie Richards talking about it?"

That name alone was enough to send my mood in the dumps. Next to me, Mel began to fidget in her seat knowing completely well that I dislike the girl.

Shivering in disgust, I scoffed and gripped the steering wheel tighter. "Really? One of the Glammers? Or should I say whores."

My anger level was riding each passing second.

"Not to seem slutty, Elaina. But I'd wanna tap that."

I burst out laughing and Mel joined. It was at this moment that I realized we were already at school.

This place brings back memories, memories that I desperately wish I could get rid of.

With one glance, it's like Mel could just sense that my mood changed.

However, Mel being Mel grinned at me and said, "we'll get through this like the bitches we are, Ok?" I nodded and smiled softly at her while grabbing her hand.

And together we said, "because we're best friends."
