Chereads / A New Life From Anubis / Chapter 10 - Chapter 9

Chapter 10 - Chapter 9

Logan

It's only been two days at my new school and I'm already the talk of the school, I mean come on I really just wanted a quiet transition. I can tell they are talking about me because their whispers die down as I walk by them and pick back up again as I walk away. I can also see some of them staring at me as I walk by males and females alike. Guess they don't get many new students.

I'm sitting in the seat I was assigned to my first day (still to new for me to call it my seat) in math class listening to the teacher drone on and on about the different ways to solve a certain problem and then showing us the way that she wants us to solve them. I quietly groaned and mentally banged my head on the desk as she just showed us all irrelevant ways and just wasted a whole bunch of time. Class was almost over when the door opened and in walked a boy.

The boy looked to be about fourteen, with short, jet black hair. His skin was extremely pale, but still radiated a brightness that I didn't think was possible. The black, short-sleeve shirt he was wearing clung to his body, along with his dark blue skinny jeans.

Quickly, I glanced away from him as he made his way to his desk which just so happens to be next to me. From the corner of my eye I see him instantly put his head down and fall asleep. I couldn't help but stare at him peacefully sleeping. What is going on with me, why am I staring at him?

When the bell rang to dismiss us to lunch, I gathered my things and started for the door. I stopped in the door frame and glanced back to see if I forgot anything and the mysterious boy who has captured my attention was still sleeping soundly. Not wanting him to miss lunch I went over and shook him awake.

"What do you want?" he said, still with his head down.

"Class is over and it's time for lunch," I answered.

"Oh thanks," the boy said as he got up and rushed out the door not even glancing in my direction.

"You're welcome," I say to an empty room. Just as I was about to leave for lunch, I noticed that he left his phone behind. Picking it up I made my way to the lunchroom.

After getting my cookies from the lunch line, I scanned the room to see if I can find the phone's owner. After several minutes I spot him sitting along in the back of the room. Carefully, I made my way there avoiding fellow classmates left and right as they aren't watching where they are going, nor were they apologizing for abruptly cutting me off.

"Forget something?" I asked after I made it to the table.

"Not that I know of," he said without looking up from his lunch.

"Then, I guess you won't be needed this anymore," I said, holding out his phone. He glanced up and I had to hold in my laughter as his jaw dropped when he saw me. Guess he is the only one who hasn't heard about me or seen me yet in this school.

"Thanks," he said as he took his phone back, quickly closing his mouth. "You must be new from all the noise you are causing in the school."

"Yeah, what's your name kid?" I asked curiously, hoping to see if I can get to know this boy.

"I'm not a kid," he said harshly.

"Sorry, so what is it?"

"My name is Talon. What about you?" Hearing his name sent shivers down my spine.

"I'm Logan."

"Now what can I help you with other then to you giving me my phone." The sound of his voice hurt me as it had a cold tone to it.

"You're the second person I had the pleasure of talking to since I got to this school besides the teachers. Everyone else seems to busy talking about me with each other than to talk to me directly."

"Well that's because a new student is a rare sight, the last time we got a new student it didn't turn out too well and it took months for this school to recover." Hearing this made me want to have him explain more to me, but then my phone decided to ring. It wasn't just a random phone call either, from the ringtone I knew it was Anubis.

"Sorry I got to take this," I apologized to Talon. I started walking towards the bathroom as I started to answer the call.

"What are you doing?" Talon said as he caught up to me. "You'll get into trouble if the teachers see you on your phone."

"That's why I'm going in the bathroom," I answered, walking into the bathroom and into a stall.

"I'll stand guard then," Talon said staying by the entrance.

"Alright knock yourself out," I said and put the phone up to my ear. "Logan speaking."

"About time you answer," Anubis's voice scolded me.

"I'm sorry I had to get to a quieter place then the school lunchroom."

"Damn, I didn't realize you were in school still. Next time I'll send you a text when I need you, but for now it is time for you to start your work."

"But what about the rest of the school day, I'll get into trouble if I just vanish and that will cause us serious problems," I said nervously, not wanting to get him angry.

"I'll have Raven (so that was the servant's name) call the school and say you had to leave for a doctor's appointment."

"Okay."

"Since these jobs are time sensitive you have to use your scythe to travel, hopefully you have it on you."

"Maybe?" I said unsure. I can hear a long sigh from Anubis.

"Did I even give you one before you left for the living world?"

"Not that I remember."

"Oh, one second then." After he said that a bright light filled the stall as a small portal opened and a key-chain with a mini scythe fell to the floor. Great, I hope Talon didn't see that light or I will have to come up with more answers for him then I already have to. Picking it up I hear Anubis say something else.

"I missed that, can you say that again?" I asked.

"Just press the bottom of the scythe and it should grow to a full size one. To make it shrink tap the bottom against the ground," he explained. "Now to use it think of your destination and swing it and a portal will open up to it. The portal will close once you step through it also. This travel is only to be used to collect souls and return, not for your personal travel. To collect a soul just tap the person with the blade and the soul will automatically be absorbed and delivered to me. It will only collect the soul of the target and will not harm anyone else. It will also keep you invisible so you won't be spotted while doing your job. Did you get all that?" He asked.

"Yeah, I think so."

"Good. If you need to become visible for some reason just visualize it and it will happen the same with returning invisible. Now get going I sent the target details to your phone," he finished hanging up. Glancing at my phone I see that I have a new message, which I quickly opened.

Anubis: Lobby, The Pirate Ship Inn, Eagle Ride, Missouri Death by gunshot. P.S. don't try to prevent any of your target's death or there will be consequences.

I pressed the bottom of the scythe and it began to grow until it was the size of me standing up, which is a good six feet. I pictured the destination in my mind in swung the scythe. A portal opened up causing the room to glow a bright blue. My last thought before I stepped through was that there was no way that Talon didn't see that light.
