It was one sunny afternoon, I was spending my last weekend before our class started by finishing some novels that I bought earlier that month. It was quiet and peaceful, not until my sister, Kiesha, suddenly barged into my room just to nag at me about how boring my life is.
"C'mon, Kei you really need to come out of your room. You're starting to look like a vampire." I lowered the book I was reading before raising an eyebrow, giving her a questioning look. "Just accompany me, go shopping or whatever!"
"You already know how much I hate that habit of yours, Kiesha. Don't even try to persuade me." I answered.
But of course, being the most annoying sister that she is, she won't stop pestering me until I finally give in. "My goodness, Kiesha! you are so annoying." She just giggled and immediately dashed out of my room.
Socializing is one of my most hated things in the world, that's why I can't really vibe with my sisters' shenanigans. We are polar opposites, resulting in why we're always compared to each other.
I apathetically entered the car where Kiesh was waiting. Our driver just greeted me with a smile, maybe he also noticed that I was in a foul mood. "You know what, this is why no one's trying to get close or even court you. You are so grumpy and annoying, why don't you try smiling for once?" She scolds as she's scrolling through her instagram account. "Assa! I just reached ten thousand followers!"
"You won the lottery or something?" I scoffed and whispered. "Will your followers make you rich?" I asked again. "You're making your life revolve around social media, that's not good for you"
"Says the one who revolves her life around being locked up with books." She retorted. "Just please try to at least open up your life to other people. You never know, you might find someone that's worth keeping, right?"
Because of the long drive to the mall, I started to think about what Kiesha said. Am I really isolating myself? Nothing is wrong with that, right? I'm sure it's fine to protect myself from people who have no good intentions.
"Keira, try this." Excitement filled Kiesha's eyes as she kept on handing me a variety of garments from a branded clothing store. "Hmm, I really think this'll fit you perfectly." And for the nth time, I once again entered the fitting room. Obviously I can't do anything else aside from doing what Kiesh wants or else she'll just make a scene, just like what she did last time.
And well, she is quite right, this dress fits perfectly, as if it was intentionally made for me. It's an A-line dress with a light blue color that compliments my fair skin. Its lace hanging down on my shoulders are just at the right length and the way it extenuates my curves is just perfect. As I step out, she instantly smiles and claps her hands. "I knew it would it would suit you!" She said, grinning from ear to ear. "Miss, we'll get that dress. Just get from the stock, thanks."
As I heard her talk to the saleslady, I immediately went back inside the dressing room and changed my clothes. For sure, Kiesha's dead once dad finds out. I bet everything rounds up upto twenty thousand pesos or something 'cause of the amount of new clothes she bought just for the first day of school tomorrow.
I caught her paying at the cashier, snatching the credit card out of her hands to stop her from buying more unnecessary stuff. "Your last purchase for today, miss. You really have no control in shopping, that's why dad always scolds you." I say yet she only glares at me.
"Don't be such a party pooper, Kei. Besides, daddy doesn't even care even if I spend too much." She uttered before facing the sales lady once again.
We both thanked her and started to strut out of the shop when a bookstore caught my attention. Kiesh was about to pull me away, but too bad, I'm faster than the flash as I enter the store.
I started scanning the whole place, the smell of the old books was like heaven for me. Until a certain book captured my interest. I was about to grab it when a guy around my age also grabbed the same book.
We stared at each other for a couple of seconds, it was weird like the ones that only happen in movies where everything around you slows down and he's the only thing you see. Our scene was exactly like that, "Excuse me? I saw this book first."
"Sorry miss, but my younger sister saw this book first." He told me as he smirked and gestured at the little girl next to him, "So with all due respect, we'll pay for this now hmm?" He said and even showed his credit card.
"I won't let you." I held the book firmly away from their hands and dashed straight for the cashier, but unfortunately, I didn't notice the scattered books on the floor. I tripped and lost my balance, almost face planting on the floor if I didn't use my arms to at least try and lessen the impact. I suddenly heard a blaring laugh coming from the guy behind me and instead of helping me up, he walked past me and picked up the book I accidentally let go of.
"Sorry miss, finders keepers." He teases and leaves me on the floor, not even attempting to look back and help me.
"Jerk!" I shouted in annoyance, but to no avail, he only walked out and left the bookstore with his sister, the book we fought about ended up in their hands.
Moments later, the little girl came back with a small plastic bag and handed it to me. "My brother said that I should give this to you, miss beautiful." The kid said and she even waved before leaving me dumbfounded.
"What...what are you doing there?" Kiesha asked when she saw me still sat down on the ground, despising my now sore hands and knees from the fall. That's when I noticed the small cut on my right knee which made me more furious than earlier.
I swear, once I see that prideful jerk again I will not hesitate to push him down the stairs or in a well or do anything just to have my revenge on him!
"Oh I just remembered, I think I saw Kiefer here. You know, your highschool crush? Did you bump into him?" She stated and that's when I realized why.
Why that man was so familiar to me.
Because he is THE Kiefer fucking Kim who broke my heart three years ago. The same guy that humiliated me in front of the whole campus just because a nerd like me had a crush on someone like him.
The same guy who thought that love was just a fucking game.
