Chereads / The Reincarnation of the Black Jade / Chapter 39 - Charlotte- Chapter 38

Chapter 39 - Charlotte- Chapter 38

I waited in my room impatiently for Bella's return. I couldn't help but feel my nerves rise with every second she wasn't in the room.

'Was I too late? What if she got there and was already in danger?" My thoughts made my deep gut feeling worsen.

I had overlooked so many parts of this place. Ignoring one of the biggest key's I had to figure out who killed the 3rd Prince.

His main love interest.

That's right. The 3rd Prince was the male lead of the original series. I couldn't help but pinch myself in annoyance.

'How could I be this dumb! Over the span of nearly three months, I've managed to completely ignore the obvious facts given to me!' I cursed at myself.

Regardless of whether the 3rd Prince's death involved Charlotte, I knew that I couldn't ignore the importance of her character, I'm just worried that others had thought of it faster than I have. That was another thing,

I didn't know if I was the only one who came to this world. While I could hope so, there is a chance that others came here the same time I did. I sighed in frustration. None of these thoughts were helping me with the current problem at hand. I needed to see Lady Charlotte before-

There was a knock at the door.

"Miss? I have brought Lady Charlotte." Bella's voice could be heard from outside. I quickly stood up.

"You can both come in." I said in a collected voice. Much different than my earlier state of mind. The door slid open, revealing Bella and Lady Charlotte.

Charlotte bowed respectfully.

"It is a pleasure to see you again Lady Black Jade. To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" She spoke as though she was tailored to sound professional. I signaled her to the table in the room, she nodded politely before heading there. I turned to Bella.

"Bella, I need you to stand watch. If anyone comes please tell them that I am preoccupied or sleeping. Alright?" I said.

"And if it's the 4th Prince?"

"What?" I asked confused.

"The 4th Prince seems to like visiting you around this time," Bella said with the slightest bit of annoyance. "If he comes, what would you like me to tell him?"

"O-oh, um… just tell him the same thing, okay?" I said. I was slightly taken aback by Bella's question. Nonetheless, she nodded before heading outside, closing the door behind her. I returned to the table where Charlotte was sitting.

"My apologies for keeping you waiting, and for calling you here so late." I said. She softly smiled.

"There was no harm. It's fine."

"Good, good." I said. As I looked at her, I quickly understood why she was the female lead. Her beautiful and alluring face, almost as if she were a goddess walking on earth. I was surprised none of the Prince's had picked her to marry. Before my insecurities could manifest further, I cleared my throat.

"What I will ask may sound alarming… but I assure you, I mean no harm when I ask this. Alright?" I said slowly. Her expression that was already serious hardened even more.

"Is that why you had your maid guard the door? So you could interrogate me?"

"In a way, yes. But not the way you are thinking. I don't need to stop someone from leaving." I looked up at her, an equally serious expression on my face. "I need to stop people from entering."

She scoffed. "Is that not the same thing? You just want to make sure others don't know what you have done to me." She spoke as if she had done this before. I grew worried.

My eyebrows furrowed together. "Done to you? What do you mean by that?" I asked. She did not respond. My mind trailed back to the original version as I tried to remember any sort of important information about Charlotte. I sighed giving up. I then remembered my powers, how I was able to sense things from simply standing near her. I looked back up at Charlotte. Her eyes that were always focused on mine squinted in confusion.

"What do you want from me? Why did you bring me here then?" She said. I suddenly felt her energy in the room, quickly, I focused on it.

'I want answers.'

I heard her heartbeat and quickly began scanning her. I didn't have endless amounts of time and she would soon notice my silence. I felt my hands clutching my dress in nervousness.

"Lady Black Jade, if that is all then…" she stood up, about to turn to the door. My concentration wavered as she stood. I felt my nose leak slightly, it was most likely blood.

'Sh*t!'

"I will take my leave-"

"Your arm." I finally said. I glanced up at her, noticing her still movements. I couldn't help but smile inwardly.

'I was right.'

"What do you mean?" She asked. I could see the slight difference in her expression as she tried to hide the truth. I wiped my nose carefully before standing.

"I noticed something when I saw you in the courtyard." I spoke as I stood, regaining my balance. "you quickly hid your left arm behind your back." As I mentioned this, she did the same thing as earlier. Hiding her left arm behind her back. I walked up to her.

"You come from a poor family, Charlotte, as the only daughter you were well protected. But after your older brother mysteriously passed away, you began learning how to fight. Is that right?" I asked. She didn't say anything, her jaw clenched. I turned around and walked back to my seat, sitting down.

"How did you know that?" She asked. I didn't respond.

"Answer me!" She yelled. I would have flinched were it not for my already depleted strength. I motioned to the chair weakly.

"Sit." I said. I watched as she contemplated before sitting down.

"You want answers, so do I. We can help each other."

'I will apologize to you later, Miss Charlotte. For now- I need to focus on clearing the 4th Prince's name!'
