The wild boar drank slowly from the river, unaware of the cold stare that came from a small boy hiding in the bushes. The boy hid rather well, blending into the environment like he always belonged there.
He is wearing a simple military camouflage suit, perfectly imitating the surroundings and carefully grabbed the improvised spear he made out of a long stick and a broken knife blade that he got from the old blacksmith in the military camp. The boy could hardly hide his small grin while observing his prey.
He was lucky. Really lucky!
It's already difficult to find such a perfect target for his hunting trip in this small forest because this animal is nothing compared to the terrific monsters in other areas, so he got excited. However, he knew, if he would slack off now and be careless, then all his luck would be for naught.
He shifted his position a little to the right to have a better view while waiting for his decoy. It didn't take long because shortly after the boar looked up from the river, another small boy in a camouflage suit entered the view of the boar. Armed with a long spear, similar to the boy hiding in the bushes, he quickly got into a defensive stance after shouting out to the boar. Seeing such a defenseless creature, the boar quickly rushed forwards at an unusual speed, contrasting his bulky appearance.
"Holy, that boar is stronger than expected, how unlucky", murmured the boy in the bushes. Nevertheless, he was sure that his friend could deal with that since they always came prepared.
The boar rapidly shortened the distance in a flash with obvious rage on his face. In his view was the small boy, who would soon be crushed by his long sharp tusks. With a loud howl the boar, again, increased his speed but soon after felt a sharp pain in his legs. His view turned upside down and the big animal crashed into the ground, stirring up grass and dirt.
"Perfect!", yelled the boy in front of the fallen boy with a wide grin and strongly pushed his spear inside the boar's flank.
"Didn't think this tripping hazard wire could be such a useful trap and it's almost invisible too. Well, considering the cost it has to be at least at this level.", analyzed the boy in the bushes, while lamenting his money loss.
The wire was made of extremely robust material while being hard to see, so its cost is higher than the ones they normally use. However, he really wanted to try it out, just because today is his special day.
Realizing the pain, the boar rushed up and turned around to flee, while rapidly losing blood. The animal's thoughts turned blank and only had survival in its mind.
"BACKUP!", yelled the boy with the bloody spear in the direction of the fleeing boar.
Soon after, the boy in the bushes rushed out, cutting off the boar's escape route. The boar, surprised by the boy's sudden appearance halted for a moment but soon after increased his speed once again.
The boy, now in front of the boar expected this outcome and strongly pulled at a thick rope, which he prepared beforehand while laying in the wilderness. After pulling the rope, a loud noise suddenly shocked the boar, diverting his attention.
The boy used this chance and threw his spear at the boar, hitting its neck. However, because of its poor material and the child's low strength, it didn't fully penetrate but still caused the boar tremendous pain, making him stop.
Afterward, a big trunk hanging at a tree with two ropes shot out of the forest, directly into the boar's body. The trunk's weight and force completely crushed the boar's bones and inner organs, which made it instantaneously lose its life.
The quick death of the boar was witnessed by the two boys, who both sighed out and showed relieved faces.
"Wow, honestly Trey, your hunting methods are kinda risky, what if that trunk didn't hit the boar?", asked the boy, who acted as a decoy, in doubt.
"No worries Cal, I prepared around seven more of those traps in the forest. It was just a matter of time.", replied the boy named Treyton without thinking much about it.
"Are you crazy? Who do you think is going to clean up those traps?"
"You, obviously."
"Shameless! It's clearly your doing, so why should I be doing that?"
"Because it's my birthday today. Besides, patience is needed in life so don't see it as a hassle. Take it as a new experience of life."
"That sounds disgusting, considering the fact that you know nothing about what it means being patient."
This clearly made Treyton angry, showing on his distorting face but quickly recovering he turned towards the forest and began walking.
"Come on, stop complaining, and start cleaning up. It's getting late and I really want to eat that boar right now, besides, the other ones in the orphanage are probably cursing you if they don't get to eat soon, so hurry up Cal."
"Just for the record, why will they only curse me?"
"It's my birthday"
"Okay stop talking, I'm done with you", replied the boy named Caleb as a last resort to escape the conversation.
"Sure, whatever"
Nothing could ruin Treyton's mood right now because his 10th birthday means that his life will change from today, making him excited at what is to come.
While thinking about that, a small smile appeared on his face before both of them vanished in the forest.
